    In der deutschen Jugend- und Umgangssprache wird ätzend abqualifizierend für etwas, das langweilig, widerwärtig und unangenehm ist, verwendet. Ätzen ist aber, etymologisch betrachtet, das Kausativ zu essen, der Beitrag versucht der Entwicklung nachzugehen, die von dem in den altgermanischen Sprachen vorhandenen essen-Kausativ, germanisch *atjan, zu den neuhochdeutschen Verben ätzen, atzen und äsen, die noch im Deutschen Wörterbuch von 2007 verzeichnet sind, führte. Dabei wird die Hypothese beachtet, dass der Verbwandel nicht ohne die Beschreibung der morphologischen und semantischen Umgebung jedes Verbs erfasst werden kann.
