ASSIMILATION OF CONSONANTS t’, d’AND k’, g’ IN THE DRUSKININKAI DIALECT

(based on G. Naktinienė, A. Paulauskienė, and V. Vitkauskas’s “Dictionary of the Druskininkai Dialect”)

In linguistic literature, when discussing the assimilation of consonants t’, d’ and k’, g’, it is described as a sporadic phenomenon (mainly in the southern Aukštaitian area), in which the soft t’, d’ are pronounced with greater palatalization, approaching k’, g’ (Zinkevičius 1987: 248–251). This assimilation occurs farther south of the line Punskas–Lazdijai–Kapčiamiestis–Švendubrė(Ratnyčia)–Kabėliai–Dubičiai–Dievėniškės, in Rimšė, around Pelesa, in the village of Aziėrkai, around Lazūnai (Otrebski 1958: 352–357; Zinkevičius 1966: 140–141; Dovydaitis 1968: 185–190; Savičiūtė, Vitkauskas 1976: 146–149; Vidugiris 1989: 204; LKT 1970: 38; Sudnik 1975: 175, 194), and elsewhere1. Several variants of assimilation are characteristic (t’ > k’, d’ > g’, k’ > t’, g’ > d’), occurring before vowels of the e, ė, i type, the diphthongs ie, ei, sometimes iau, and the back vowels a, o, u, ε (Otrebski 1958: 352–357; Zinkevičius 1966: 140–141; Dovydaitis 1968: 185–190; Savičiūtė, Vitkauskas 1976: 146–149).

All the aforementioned variants of assimilation occur in the Druskininkai dialect; that is, this dialect is characterized by assimilation of consonants t’, d’ and k’, g’ before vowels of the e, ė, i type, the diphthongs ei, ie, au, the diphthongoid (i)e and, in rare cases, before the back vowels a, o, u.

1. The soft consonant d’ changes to g’:

before the front vowel e and the diphthongoid (i)e, e.g., išā.ug’ei 'išāudei' 1332, ā.ug’eklas 'audeklas' 23, 97, 312, 352, ā.ug’eklo. 'audeklo' 349, ā.ug’eklus 'audeklus' 133, geb’es’i·las 'debesylas' 61, g’ē·da 'deda' 170, 196, 249, g’ē·das’i 'dedasi' 88, 309, 365, g’ē·s’ies 'desies' 223, pàg’edu 'padedu' 270, pàg’edzi 'padedi' 306, pàg’eda 'padeda' 274, 278, pàzg’eda 'pasideda' 440, pràg’edzi 'pradedi' 132, pràg’eda 'pradeda' 10, 129, 231, 243, prìg’edam 'pridedam' 277, 447, prìg’eda 'prideda' 390, 424, 447, prìzg’eda 'prisideda' 92, sùg’edam 'sudedam' 26, sùg’eda 'sudeda' 81, 110, 171, ùžg’eda 'uždeda' 351, us’ig’edam 'užsidedam' 334, us’ig’eda 'užsideda' 130, 312, 340, 451–452, (u)ùžg’eda 'uždeda' 11, (v)ùžg’eda

1 Cases of such confusion are also observed in Russian, Ukrainian, and Latvian dialects, e.g., Ukrainian – хата: хаки, Latvian – salanki (< salankis): Salantai, valanki (< valanti): Valančiūnų km., etc. Otrebski 1958: 352–357; Hausenberga 1932: 130).

The examples mentioned above show that in the Druskininkai dialect, the pronunciation of g’ instead of d’ occurs most often before e-type vowels (see Table 1).

Only one example was found here before ei and four before ie. The mixing of consonants t', d' and k', g' before the diphthong ie is rare (only 5 cases).

An examination of the morphemic distribution of the mixing of consonants t', d' and k', g' in the Druskininkai dialect shows that it occurs inside word roots, in word roots before suffixes, in roots before endings, and in suffixes before endings.

The mixing of consonants t', d' and k', g' occurs inside the roots of various parts of speech: in the root d(i)e- or de- (see 1.1.); in the root debesyl- (see 1.1.); in the root deg- (see 1.1.); in the root del- (see 1.1.); in the root deng- (see 1.1.); in the root dešim- (see 1.1.); dešimt- (see 1.1.); in the root dešr- (see 1.1.); in the root devyn- (see 1.1.); in the root de- (see 1.2.); in the root d(i)ėd- or dėd- (see 1.2.); in the root d(i)el- or dėl- (see 1.2.); in the root dėm- (see 1.2.); in the root (ne)dėl- or (ne)d(i)el- (see 1.2.); in the root did- (see 1.3.); in the root die- (see 1.6.); in the root dien- (see 1.4.); in the root dirb- (see 1.3.); in the root dirster- (see 1.3.); in the root dyv- (see 1.3.); in the root dvi- (see 1.3.); in the root ged- (see 3.1.); in the root geg- (see 3.1.); in the root gel- (see 1.1.); in the root gelb- (see 3.1.); in the root gelež- (see 3.1.); in the root gelt- (see 3.1.); in the root gen- (see 3.1.); in the root ger- (see 3.1.); in the root gerv- (see 2.1.); in the root gėl- (see 3.2.); in the root gėr- (see 3.1.); in the root girn- (see 3.3.); in the root girt- (see 3.3.); in the root gysl- (see 3.3.); in the root gyv- (see 3.3.); in the root grietį- 2.3; in the root keden- (see 1.1.); in the root kel- (see 4.1.); in the root kėl- (see 4.2.); in the root kemš- (see 4.1.); in the root kep- (see 2.1., 4.1.); in the root kepur- (see 4.1.); in the root ketur- (see 4.1.); in the root ketv- (see 4.1.); in the root kiem- (see 4.4.); in the root kiet- (see 4.4.); in the root kijietr- (see 2.3.); in the root kil- (see 4.3.); in the root kimb- (see 4.3.); in the root kimš- (see 4.3.); kink- (see 4.3.); in the root kirm- (see 4.2.); in the root kirp- (see 4.3.); in the root kirt- (see 4.3.); in the root kirv- (see 4.3.); in the root kyšt- (see 4.2.); in the root kit- (see 4.3.); in the root patenk- (see 2.1.); in the root penk- (see 4.4.); in the root petelušk- (see 2.1.); in the root poter- (see 2.1.); in the root prietel- (see 2.1.); in the root rud- (see 1.1.); in the root salster- (see 2.1.); in the root skerdž- (see 1.1.); in the root skyst- (see 4.2.); in the root stefan- (see 2.1.); in the root sterbl- (see 2.1.); in the root student- (see 1.1.); in the root taip- (see 2.1.); in the root te (see 2.1.); in the root teism- (see 2.1.); in the root tek- (see 2.1.); in the root tel- (see 4.1.); in the root tem- (see 2.1.); in the root ten- (see 2.3.); in the root terl- (see 2.1.); in the root terp- (see 2.1.); in the root tešm- (see 2.1.); in the root tet- (see 2.1.); in the root tēš- (see 2.2.); in the root t(i)ev- or tėv- (see 2.2.); in the root tik- (see 2.3.); in the root tilt- (see 2.3.); in the root tiš- (see 2.3.).

Mixing may occur in word roots before suffixes: in the root ankst- before the suffix -yv- (see 2.1.); in the root aud- before the suffixes -ekl- (see 2.1.) and -ėj- (see 1.2.); in the root brazd- before the endings -ė-, -ėj- and -(i)e- (see 1.2.); in the root burgž- before the suffix -ėj- (see 3.1.); in the root deg- before the suffix -y- (see 1.1.); in the root did- before the suffix -el- (see 1.1.); in the root drusk- before the suffix -inyk- (-inink-) (see 4.2.); in the root dund- before the suffix -(i)ej- (-ėj-) (see 1.2.); in the root gird- before the suffix -ėj- (see 1.2., 3.3); in the root grik- before the suffix -in- (see 4.3.); in the root jaut- before the suffix -el- (see 2.1.); in the root kort- before the suffix -el- (see 2.1.);

in the root kuod- before the suffix -el- (see 1.1.); in the root laist- before the suffix -y- (see 2.3.); in the root marg- before the suffix -y- (see 3.3.); in the root mot- before the suffixes -er- (see 2.1.) and -in- (see 2.3.); in the root pant- before the suffix -el- (see 2.2.); in the root penk- before the suffix -iolik- (see 4.5.); in the root plat- before the suffix -esn- (see 2.1.); in the root rašt- before the suffix -el- (see 2.1.); in the root rat- before the suffixes -el- (see 2.1.), -ė- (see 1.2.) and -ėl- (see 2.2.); in the root rūt- before the suffix -el- (see 2.1.); in the root rud- before the suffix -en (see 1.1.); in the root sart- before the suffix -el- (see 2.2.); in the root sėd- before the suffixes -el- (see 1.1.) and -ėj- (see 1.2.); in the root skirst- before the suffix -y- (see 2.3.); in the root spaud- before the suffix -im- (see 1.3.); in the root steb- before the suffix -ėj- (see 1.2.); in the root stot- before the suffix -el- (see 2.1.); in the root stud- before the suffix -ent- (see 1.1.); in the root tard- before the suffix -y (see 1.3.); in the root topt- before the suffix -erėj- (see 2.1.); in the root turt- before the suffix -ing- (see 2.3.); in the root vag- before the suffix -yst- (see 3.3.); in the root vaist- before the suffix -in- (see 2.3.); in the root vald- before the suffix -išk- (see 2.3.); in the root valst- before the suffix -yb- (see 2.3.); in the root vand- before the suffixes -en- (see 1.1.) and -in- (see 1.3.); in the root vart- before the suffixes -ėl- (see 2.2.) and -el- (see 2.1.); in the root veizd- before the suffix -ėj- (see 1.2.); in the root vyzd- before the suffixes -ė- (see 1.2.) and -ėč- (see 1.2.); in the root žad- before the suffix -ėj- (see 1.2.); in the root žyd- before the suffixes -ėj- and (-(i)ėj-) (see 1.2.); in the root žied- before the suffix -el- (see 1.1.).

Mixing is observed in word suffixes before endings: in the suffix -ait- before the endings -e (see 2.1.), -ė (see 2.2.), -es (see 1.1, 2.1.), -ės (see 1.1.), -i (<-ę) (see 2.3.); in the suffix -st- before the ending -ė (see 2.2.); in the suffix -t- before the endings -ės and -es (see 2.1.); in the suffix -ud- before the ending -ėn (see 2.1.); in the suffix -uik- before the ending -(i)em (-ėm) (see 1.2.); in the suffix -uk- before the ending -(i)es (-ės) (see 2.2.).

Mixing also occurs in roots before endings in various parts of speech: in the root aud- before the endings -ė (see 1.2.), -ei (see 1.1.), -ėm (see 1.2.) and -u (1.5.); in the root aviet- before the ending -ių (see 2.4.); in the root baud- before the ending -ė (see 1.2.); in the root bit- before the endings -e (2.2.), -ės (plural) (see 2.2.), -ėm (see 2.2.) and -ių (see 2.4.); in the root blyšk- before the ending -i (see 4.3.); in the root brazd- before the ending -a (see 1.2.); in the root ded- before the ending -a (see 1.4.); in the root ėd- before the ending -(i)e (-ė) (see 1.2.); in the root gird- before the endings -(i)ė (see 4.2.) and -iau (see 1.7.); in the root gruzd- before the ending -(i)es (see 1.2.); in the root jaut- before the ending -ė (see 2.2.); in the root juod- before the ending -įs (<-ęs) (see 1.3.); in the root (pa)juost- before the ending -ė (see 2.2.); in the root kink- before the ending -ė (see 2.3.); in the root kišk- before the ending -ių (see 4.6.); in the root (pa)klod- before the ending -į (<-ę) (see 1.3.); in the root (pa)klot- before the endings -es (<-ęs) (see 2.2.), -ės (see 2.2.), -(i)es (-ės) (see 2.2.) and -į (<-ę) (see 1.5.); in the root laik- before the ending -is (<*-ęs) (see 4.3.); in the root meld- before the ending -ėmės (see 1.1.); in the root menk- before the ending -i (see 4.3); in the root meld- before the ending -ėmės (see 1.1.); in the root menk- before the ending -i (see 4.3.); in the root miest- before the ending -i (<-e) (see 2.3.); in the root nyt- before the endings -ės and -(i)es

(-s) (see 2.1.); in the root pažast- before the ending -ėn (see 2.2.); in the root pelud- before the ending -ėn (see 1.2.); in the root penk- before the ending -i (see 4.3.); in the root (po)sūk- before the ending -is (see 4.3.); in the root rėd- before the ending -ėm (see 1.2.); in the root rod- before the ending -(i)e (see 1.2.); in the root rug- before the ending -ius (see 3.4.); in the root silk- before the ending -ė (see 4.2.); in the root skirst- before the ending -ė (see 2.2.); in the root skurd- before the ending -is (<–s) (see 1.3.); in the root smult- before the ending -i (see 4.3.); in the root spaud- before the ending -(i)e (-ė) (see 1.2.); in the root stat- before the endings -ė (see 2.2.) and -(i)e (-ė) (see 2.2.); in the root rėd- before the ending -ėm (see 1.2.); in the root sveik- before the ending -i (see 4.6.); in the root šird- before the ending -(i)es (-ės) (see 1.2.); in the root valg- before the ending -is (<-ės) (see 3.3.); in the root vard- before the ending -(i)es (-ės) (see 1.2.) and -(i)e (-ė) (see 1.2.); in the root verpst- before the ending -ė (see 2.2.); in the root vert- before the ending -ė (see 2.2.), -(i)em- (-ėm) (see 2.2.), and -ėm (see 2.2.); in the root uod- before the ending -į (< -ė) (see 1.3.); in the root veizd- before the ending -(i)es (-ės) (see 1.2.); in the root vog- before the endings -ė and -(i)e (-ė) (see 3.2); in the root žud- before the ending -ė (see 1.2.).

Thus, a morphological analysis of the cases of alternation showed that the consonants t’, d’ and k’, g’ are “mixed” in the morphemes of words from various parts of speech: within the root, in the word root before a suffix, in the root before an ending, and in a suffix before an ending (see Table 2). Alternation within roots is the most frequent.

Table 2

Morphological positions of alternation

Alternation within roots | Alternation in roots before suffixes | Alternation in suffixes before endings | Alternation in roots before endings | number | number% | number | number% | number | number% | number | number% | 87 | 40 | 55 | 25 | 11 | 5 | 65 | 29.8

This variety of morpho(pho)nological positions indicates that the change is not accidental and has historical antecedents.

As is evident from all the material examined, the alternation of the consonants t’, d’ and k’, g’ did not arise by chance. This is confirmed by its frequent occurrence before vowels of the e, ė type and by the variety of morpho(pho)nological positions.

Sinchroniškai mišimas aiškinamas kaip fonologinių opozicijų nebuvimas (Girdenis 1983: 71–73; Sudnik 1975: 175, 194)4.

Diachronically, the emergence of alternation among the consonants t’, d’ and k’, g’ is linked to the Yotvingian language because its geographical area coincides with the territories inhabited by the ancient Yotvingians (Otrębski 1958: 352–357; Dovydaitis 1968: 207–210), and is regarded as a-

4 In addition to t’ and k’, d’ and g’, the dialects that “mix” these consonants also have “intermediate” k’, g’, which are facultative variants of the labial plosive phonemes / K̡, / G̡ / (Girdenis 1979: 23-30; Girdenis 1983: 71-73).

228

čios tarmės vidinės raidos rezultatų (Girdenis 1979: 23–30)5 arba aiškinamas kaip bendras visoms baltų kalboms reiškinys (Savičiūtė, Vitkauskas 1978: 146–149)6.

It has been observed that in the Druskininkai dialect, in some cases, before vowels of the i type, confusion arose where dzūkavimas should have taken place7 (when d’ > g’): g’īvinas ‘two of them’ 258, g’īd’el’is ‘big’ 65, g’id’el’o. ‘of the big one’ 366, g’idžà.us’o. ‘of the biggest’ 222, gv’id’ėšim.s ‘twenty’ 80, g’ī.rs’t’eru ‘look closely’ 69, spaug’imas ‘pressure’ 341, targ’ic ‘to argue’ 227, 471. This confirms the previously mentioned hypothesis that this phenomenon must have occurred before the narrowing of the ending *-ėn (Mikulėnienė 1994: 12–13); cf. acc. sg. džigel’i ‘big’ (feminine) 29, kalà.ik’i ‘little hill’ 60, mergà.ik’i ‘little girl’ 405, 436, rak’ė.li ‘little wheel’ 297, sto.k’ė.li ‘little station’ 350, paklò.ki ‘little bed’ 38; loc. sg. m’iesk’i ‘in the city’ (402, 432); part. (429), sug’ė.g’is ‘burnt’ 465, us’īg’ė.g’i ‘having caught fire’ 177, suk’em’i ‘having grown dark’ 402, susuòg’i ‘having withered.’
