LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE QUESTIONS XXXVIII (1997) Asta LESKAUSKAITĖ MIXING OF #, d’ AND k), g) FAT IN THE BRUSKININKI FERMENTATION FACTORY (according to G. Naktinienė, A. Paulauskienė, V. Vitkauskas “Druskininkų dialekto Zodyna”) In the linguistic literature, referring to consonants £; d'ir k; g'mixing, it is indicated that it is considered a sporadic phenomenon (mainly in the southern highlands), when soft f, d' are pronounced more palatalized, close to k, g' (Zinkevičius 1987: 248-251). The mixing is detected more south from the line PunskasLazdijai-Kapčiamiestis-Švendūbrė(Ratnyčia)-Kabėliai-Dubičiai-Dievėniškés, Rimšėjė, about Pėlesa, Azierkų village, about Lazūnai (Otrebski 1958: 352— 357; Zinkevičius 1966: 140-141; Dovydaitis 1968: 185-190; Savičiūtė, Vitkauskas 1976: 146-149; Vidugiris 1989: 204; LKT 1970: 38; Sudnik 1975: 175, 194) and elsewhere. Several variants of mixing are characteristic (¢'> k, d'> g, k' > t; g' > d"), appearing in positions before ¢, €, f-type vocalism, diphthongs ze, ei, sometimes jau, and back-order vowels a, o, u, £ (Otrębski 1958: 352-357; Zinkevičius 1966: 140-141; Dovydaitis 1968: 185-190; Savičiūtė, Vitkauskas 1976 : 146-149). In Druskininkai dialect all the above mentioned variants of mixing are found, i.e. this dialect is characterized by consonant £; d'ir k; g'mixing before ¢, €, itipo vowels, diphthongs er, jie, au, diphthongoid (7)e and, in rare cases, before the back-order u. vowels a, o, 1. The soft consonant d' turns into g': before the frontal vowel e and the diphthong (7)e, e.g. i$4.ug'ei 'i saw' 133*, a.ug'eklas 'cloth' 23, 97, 312, 352, a.ug'eklo. Such mixing is also observed in Russian, Ukrainian and Latvian dialects, for example, Ukrainian — xara: xakxi, Latvian —salanki (< salankis): Salantai, valanki (< valanti): Valančiūnų km., etc. Otrębski 1958: 352-357; Hausenberga 1932: 130). 2 The figures below the examples show the pages of DTZ 1988. 220

Thus, morphologically analyzing the cases of mixing, it was observed that consonants; d' and k, g' are "mixed" in various word morphemes of many parts of the language: inside the root, in the word root before the suffix, in the word root before the ending, in the prefix before the ending (see section 4.4). 2 Table 1). The most common mixture inside the roots. 2 Table 1 Morphological positions of mixing Mixing inside roots Mixing in roots Mixing in prepositions Mixing in roots before suffixes before endings before endings number number% number number% |number | number% number number% 87 40 55 25 11 5 65 29,8 Such diversity of morph(pho)nological positions shows that the change was not accidental and had historical prerequisites. As can be seen from all the material examined, consonants;, d'and k; g'mixing is not accidental. This is confirmed by its frequent appearance in the position before €, é-type vowels and the variety of morphological positions. Synchronic mixing is interpreted as the absence of phonological oppositions (Girdenis 1983: 71-73; Sudnik 1975: 175, 194)”. Diachronic consonants #, d' and k; g'mišimo appearance due to the geographical coincidence of its area with the old jotvingiy inhabited areas is associated with the jotvingiy language (Otrębski 1958: 352-357; Dovydaitis 1968: 207-210), considered pa- * Be t'ir k! d'ir g; these consonants "mixing" schnets have also "intermediate" £; (g) which are optional variants of the labial explosive phonemes /K /, /G / (Girdenis 1979: 23-30; 1983 : 71-73). 228
