an h oponyms o med a e hei husbands. The naming o 32 women ollowed such a pa e n
(39.02% o all cases o naming). As many as an h oponym pe o ming i s unc ions. They we e

The p ocess o naming Li huanian ci y esiden s as women was long and
complica ed. Thei w i ing sys em a ied om he adminis a i e legal
documen s o he 16 h o he 18 h cen u y o he chu ch me ical books. I is
clea ha a leas he eigh een h-cen u y d ina is model o naming u ban women
is he mos common, bu i has no ye become he absolu e no m (Ragauskai ė
2008: 33[…]34). In he ea ly se en een h cen u y, women in Vilnius we e o en called
by hei i s names and su names. The e is ei he no su name a ached o a
woman's i s name, o he a he 's name is w i en, o he su names a e a e.
This makes up o e 80 pe cen (in he ma iage egis a ion book […] e en abou 90
pe cen ) o he su names. I was no cus oma y o use only one su name, wi hou a i s name, when w i ing nicknames
(Zinke ičius 1977: 48 […] 49) This Decision is add essed o he Membe S a es.
16 h-18 h cen u y 1 293 The de elopmen o he name o he owns o Kaunas is

names. Based on he esul s o he s udy o he naming o women in Kaunas and
Li huanian illages, i was a gued ha he naming sys em o women in Kaunas was o med as e han ha o illages (Ragauskai ė 2005: 55, 144).

The Ac a Linguis ica Li huanica LXXXVII is he i s o i s kind in Li huania.
F om he end o he six een h cen u y o he beginning o he se en een h
cen u y, he sys em o naming women in Joniškio1 a ied. In he 16 h and 17 h
cen u ies, mo he s, daugh e s, and godmo he s we e o en gi en Ch is ian
names. The name o he child is used o indica e he ela ionship o kinship
(acco ding o he spouse o he a he ) (Ga liauskas 2004: 22). When naming ci ies
wi h a Ch is ian name, hei masculine pe sonal name is some imes used, which is
he su name o he ounde . The e a e no many insc ip ions o he Ionians wi h
a Ch is ian name, nex o which he amily's a ilia ion is indica ed by he
an h oponym o he man, w i en wi h he su name o he su name. In addi ion
o hese, he ype o hei w i ing is s ill widesp ead (especially in he la e
1599-1621 yea s in he insc ip ions o he Joniškio k ikš o me ikų knyga) wi h wo

The an h opological ma e ial is mainly collec ed om he sou ces o he his o y o he ci y o
Rad ilas in he 17 h cen u y. These a e he in en o ies o Kėdainiai in 1604, 1622, 1624, 1666 and he
documen s o he Kėdainiai E angelical Re o med Chu ch in 1628-1663, w i en in Polish (see
