THE LEXICON OF THE ANONYMOUS 1737 LITHUANIAN GRAMMAR “UNIVERSITAS LINGVARUM LITVANIAE”

(Index)

The lexicon of old writings is very important for the study of language history and historical grammar. It provides valuable material not only for Lithuanian studies but also for Slavic studies and Indo-European studies more generally. The highly archaic Lithuanian lexicon helps address a number of questions concerning the shared lexicon of Slavic and Indo-European studies.

The anonymous 1737 Lithuanian grammar “Universitas lingvarum Litvaniae” (hereafter abbreviated as Universitas) is one of the very few works of secular writing from the early eighteenth century. This grammar is also the first known attempt to standardize the Lithuanian language in Lithuania itself. It recorded the norms of the so-called middle variant of the written language of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania of that time1. The lexicon of Universitas is especially important because this grammar made the first attempt in the history of our literary language to establish pitch accent, and marked it fairly consistently. Consequently, the index of Universitas will be particularly useful to researchers of Lithuanian historical accentology.

Although the lexicon of Universitas is not very extensive, it will nevertheless help readers become acquainted with the characteristic phonetic and morphological features of the language as standardized in the early eighteenth century. There are 633 headwords.

The entire lexicon of Universitas is presented here: both common nouns and proper nouns. All parts of speech are also included.

The headword form of nouns, printed in bold type, is the nominative singular; for pluralia tantum nouns, it is the nominative plural. For nouns whose nominative form does not appear in the grammar's text, that form is reconstructed.

The headword form of adjectives is likewise given as the masculine nominative singular, with its gender indicated. The feminine form is given alongside the masculine form only if it occurs in the grammar's text.

For all pronouns, the nominative singular forms are given (and for personal pronouns, the nominative plural as well); other forms, even those with a different stem, are listed in the same entry.

The infinitive is given as the headword form of verbs. If it does not occur in the grammar's text, it is reconstructed. Prefixed verbs are listed as independent verbs.

When a verb with the same stem occurs both without a prefix and with one or more prefixes, then after the forms of the verb without a prefix, the prefixed forms are also listed—

1 Zinkevičius Z. Dėl lietuvių raštų kilmės. – Baltistica, 1977, t. 13 (1), p. 241.

155

The iterative verbs of the same root are listed as separate entries. When the text also contains reflexive verb forms, the reflexive infinitive form is given. When the text contains both non-reflexive and reflexive forms of the same verb, they are listed separately.

All headwords are presented in alphabetical order and in the spelling of contemporary standard Lithuanian. The vocabulary of the Universito is presented, as far as possible, in the spelling used in that grammar.

Word meanings are explained when they differ from the meanings of the corresponding words in contemporary standard Lithuanian, when the same word is used in more than one sense in the text, or when synonyms occur. To make a word’s meaning easier to understand, a Polish translation is sometimes also provided (in the form given by the author of the Universito). In all other cases, meanings are not explained.

After all the grammatical forms of a word have been given, sentences or syntactic word combinations are added for the relevant words. The author of the Universito treats some word combinations as grammatical forms, although they are in fact word combinations, e.g.: o kad kalbėčia, kalbėtumei, kalbėtų (31), O kad bučia kalbėjas...(31), O kad bučia kalbėjusis (31), O kad Butūmeme kalbėja (31), and so on.

For words of non-Lithuanian origin, the source-language word is given in parentheses.

The accentuation is indicated for all accented words in the Universito. The accents are marked as they were in the Universite: the acute accent is marked by an archaic letter between italicized elements; in diphthongs and mixed diphthongs with the circumflex accent, only the first vowel is marked (except in ie); the circumflex accent is marked either with a circumflex (vowels) or with a grave accent (diphthongs and mixed diphthongs—not in the final syllable, though sometimes there as well). Short vowels in accented final syllables are likewise marked with a grave accent.

Corrections are given in parentheses for words with incorrect accentuation. Cases corrected by J. Rozvadovskis in the 1896 edition are also noted. Words left unaccented by the author of the Universito himself are retained as such.

After word forms and sentences or word combinations illustrating meanings, Arabic numerals indicate the pages on which those forms occur. If the same form occurs several times on a page, the number of occurrences is given in parentheses after the page number. If the same word form differs in spelling or accent mark, it is listed separately.

LEXICON OF THE ANONYMOUS 1737 GRAMMAR OF THE LITHUANIAN LANGUAGE

“UNIVERSITAS LINGVARUM LITVANIAE” (Index)

Abstract

The anonymous 1737 grammar of the Lithuanian language, „Universitas linguarum Litvaniae“ (the first grammar published in Lithuania known to us), was the first attempt to normalize the Lithuanian literary language in Lithuania (before that, similar works had been produced in Prussia). It is especially important because here, for the first time in the history of the Lithuanian language, syllable accents are marked (and quite correctly). This grammar is an important source of valuable material for studying the history of the Lithuanian language from various perspectives, especially accentology. Therefore, preparing a complete index of the vocabulary and grammatical forms in this grammar is highly relevant. The index may help resolve many problems in both Slavic and Indo-European studies. Researchers of the history of the Lithuanian literary language, lexicology, and especially historical accentology will find much valuable material in it.
