Institute of the Lithuanian Language
The Institute of the Lithuanian Language is a state research institute conducting scientific and applied research. One of the Institute’s areas of activity is the promotion of Lithuanian studies worldwide. The Institute is an active member of various international linguistic organizations and also serves as the national coordinator in Lithuania for the European META-NET initiative, whose purpose is to foster an information society in a multilingual Europe.
The main idea of the META-NET project is to develop the technological foundations of an information society in a multilingual Europe, bring together a community united by a shared vision and strategic research objectives, create an open-access resource infrastructure and a common digital European market, and strengthen links between language-related technologies. Thirty-one European countries are currently participating in the infrastructure under development.
The META-NORD project for the Nordic and Baltic countries has been underway since February 2011. The project aims to expand the multilingual information space, bring together a community developing language technologies and resources, and establish an open infrastructure of language resources, technologies, and tools for the Nordic and Baltic countries, adaptable for scientific and business purposes. It is one part of the larger European META-NET infrastructure, covering Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, and Swedish, each spoken by fewer than 10 million people. The project coordinator is Tilde (Latvia); the partners are the Institute of the Lithuanian Language (Lithuania), the University of Bergen
