On Sep embe 8, 2024, p o .Hen y Sidney Smi h, known o all Egyp ologis s and o his nu-
me ous iends in Egyp , Uni ed Kingdom and i ually elsewhe e in he wo ld as „Ha y“,
passed away. Al hough his li e and academic ca ee we e always connec ed wi h he B i ish
academic wo ld (Uni e si y o Camb idge and Uni e si y College London) and ins i u ions
(Egyp Explo a ion socie y), Czech Egyp ologis s ha e good easons o emembe him as well.
Al eady in 1961, du ing he in e na ional campaign o UNESCO o sal age he monumen s
o ancien Nubia o be subme ged by he wa e s o he High Assuan Dam, he headed a eam o
he Egyp Explo a ion Socie y ha conduc ed asu ey o apa on he Egyp ian Nubia. In Kho
Fomm el -A mu , he eam headed by him disco e ed and pa ly exca a ed as unningly pain ed
shel e , ma ked EES Rock D awing Si e No. 49 (Smi h 1962: 79–90). As his eam was assigned o
conduc an a chaeological su ey only, he asked UNESCO o en us ano he mission wi h he

o he mission o he hen Czechoslo ak (now Czech) Ins i u e o Egyp ology o he Cha les

he esul s o his wo k we e published by ou colleague Lenka Suko á (now Va adzino á)
(Suko á 2011), whose e o s we e so kindly app ecia ed by Ha y Smi h in his cha ming and
in e es ing ecollec ions o he Nubian campaign (Smi h 2022: 48).
Du ing his long - ime pa icipa ion in he a chaeological exca a ions o he EES a Saqqa a,
headed by him om 1971 un il 1988, he was in ac aclose neighbou o he Czech a chaeolog-
ical mission wo king a he nea by Abusi . Membe s o bo h missions ha e o en isi ed each
o he , sha ed hei knowledge and expe ience and enjoyed hose special momen s a Saqqa a
o Abusi . Fo many yea s, mo eo e , bo h missions sha ed he expe ience and abili y o Czech
an h opologis Eugen S ouhal (Klí 2010; Klí 2016, Bie ak 2016; o abibliog aphy o Eugen
S ouhal see S ouhal 2010; Anon. 2016).

wo k a Saqqa a (especially he nume ous sou ces w i en in Demo ic), o en in co -ope a ion
wi h his o me pupil D Sue Da ies. Un il a e y old age, he used o pa icipa e in he egula ly
o ganized in e na ional con e ences on Demo ic s udies, whe e he au ho o his ecollec ion
had ahappy occasion o mee him and o enjoy his immense kindness and iendship.
Ha y Smi h was ab illian schola and, a he same ime, amos kind and iendly man.
As such, he will s ay in ou memo ies o e e .
