landscape. Wi h he ambi ion o enhancing humani ies esea ch and
opening up knowledge and p ac ices o a wide public, schola s, a -
is s and p og amme s ha e been a ac ed who a e engaged in he
applica ion o compu e science and eme ging echnologies in he
humani ies. Building on he compe ences and achie emen s al eady
made a he Depa men o Humani ies, which has been awa ded wi h
an excellence g an by he I alian Minis y o Educa ion, Uni e si ies
and Resea ch (MIUR), a new eam o expe schola s and specialis s

and a numbe o wo kshops and symposiums. Public e en s we e
deli e ed online unde he condi ions o he COVID-19 eme gency,
co e ing opics anging om digi al papy ology and palaeog aphy
o media a chaeology and con empo a y audio- isual a , om GIS
o gi , om code o he ma e iali y o a global lockdown. A echnical
esea ch in as uc u e has been de eloped o acili a ing bo h e-
ac o ing digi al legacy esou ces and cu ing-edge esea ch. Social
media has been explo ed o communica ing and sha ing in o ma-
ion wi h schola s and he public. S a egic pa ne ships wi h cul u -
al he i age ins i u ions, lea ned associa ions and local communi ies
ha e been c ea ed, and exis ing pa ne ships ha e been s eng h-
ened. The only missing elemen , i seemed, was an open access pub-
lica ion enue o genuine esea ch a icles a he c oss oads o he
humani ies adi ional co e disciplines, and he me hodologic ad-
ancemen and echnological inno a ion. Hence, he idea o making
magazén soon ook shape.
2 The Making o magazén’s Pilo Issue
A yea ago, when we se o h o s a magazén, we we e indeed won-
de ing whe he he schola ly wo ld needed ano he jou nal. The pe-

has ea ned g owing conside a ion inside he academia. Ce ainly, i

3 Looking o Fusions o a B oade Kind
In 2020, o ou inaugu al olume, we esol ed o de o e he wo se-
mes al issues o he in e wining landscape eme ging om he e-
cen de elopmen o digi al and public humani ies. Fo his eason,
he in e na ional call o abs ac s we launched in Feb ua y simply
bo e he i le ‘Fusions’, a s aigh o wa d e m wi h no u he ills,
in o de o lea e he deba e as open as possible. As a ma e o ac ,
in he las wo decades much e o was placed in de ining sepa a e
disciplina y ields, in o de o canonise and alida e he use o digi al
me hodologies o public app oaches in he speci ic subse s o he hu-
mani ies. Such is o ins ance he case o Digi al A His o y, which is
s ill ocused on he de ini ion o i s own esea ch scope, while ying
o legi imise he adop ion o big da a analysis o a his o ical knowl-
edge (iconog aphic compa ison, image ma ching, ma e ial analysis
e c.) as well as es ablishing bes p ac ices in digi al a chi ing sys-
ems speci ically o he a s (D ucke 2013). A simila de elopmen

analysis o ex s and documen s (Pie azzo 2015; Be i 2019). As a
as a chaeology is conce ned, he ex ensi e use o digi al ools (GIS,
spa ial analysis, 3D modelling, ne wo k analysis, simula ion, image
analysis e c.) signi ican ly expanded he unde s anding o he human
pas and unlocked new pa hs o a chaeological enqui y and dissem-
ina ion, such ha all a chaeologis s oday a e ‘digi al’ in hei own
igh (Mo gan, E e 2012, 523; Cos opoulos 2016). E en ually, he e-
la ionship be ween public and digi al his o y ecen ly occupied many
schola s, since he p ocess o digi isa ion o p ima y and seconda y
sou ces, in pa icula o his o ians, called ou adi ional app oach-
es and me hods o esea ch, analysis, communica ion, and dissemi-
na ion (Cohen, Rosenzweig 2005). Howe e , e idence sugges s ha
digi al and public challenges acing indi idual disciplines a e ac u-
ally common o he en i e ield o he humani ies, hus a ou ing a
c oss-disciplina y app oach a he han hema ic isola ion. Indeed,
he impac o digi isa ion and public in ol emen o e ed a unique
oppo uni y o he humani ies: a window o expe imen a ion wi h
me ged me hodologies, blended sha ing p ac ices, joined ep esen-

humani ies. A e all, he e m se es well o emb ace e e y possi-
ble kind o me ge , in e ela ion, join , blend, in e pene a ion, in-
e dependency, c oss-con amina ion ha a ec ed o s ill in o ms he
p ocesses, app oaches, and p ac ices o esea ch in his wide ield.
Hence, we in i ed schola s o submi con ibu ions ha span om
heo e ical deba es o me hodological e lec ions, as well as he ex-
amina ion o pa icula case s udies. The esea ch scope should co -
e he wides possible ch onology and ypology o opics wi hou any
dis inc ion o me hodological app oach, p o ided ha i is con inc-
ingly p esen ed and sui able o add ess he concep o ‘ usions’ in
he digi al and public humani ies. We we e pa icula ly eage o ind
expe imen al esea ch o wo ks making use o media and code, wi h
special a en ion o a icles dealing wi h bes p ac ices o commi ed
o an open sou ce policy. Speci ically, we in ended o u ge p ospec-
i e au ho s o engage wi h an open concep o ‘ usions’, hough a
he same ime cla i ying how hey would posi ion hemsel es ac oss
a se o ans e sal domains ha we belie e need o be add essed
wi h due awa eness, in o de o es ablish digi al and public human-
i ies as a cohe en ield inside academia. These dimensions e e o:
1) he kind o ma e ials (e.g. monumen s, documen s, wo ks o a ,
bo n digi al a e ac s); 2) he media o ep esen a ion (e.g. image da-
a, ex ual da a, audio- isual da a, 3D da a); 3) he applied me hods
(modelling, epis emology, collec ion, p ocessing, isualisa ion, anal-
ysis, he meneu ics); 4) he modes o sha ing (publica ion, pa icipa-
ion, communica ion, p ese a ion, a e li e); and 5) ac o s, ac o s
and agen s o he chosen ield (socie y, ins i u ions, communi ies,
echnology, en i onmen , discou se). This ask could no be accom-
plished by he au ho s solely, as hey needed he membe s o ou ed-
i o ial boa d o accompany hem on his pa h, while om ou side we
also had o iden i y e iewe s capable o app ecia ing cu ing-edge
esea ch in an open domain. Despi e ou i s call o abs ac s and
he subsequen pee e iew p ocess happening in he mids o he
wo ldwide eme gency si ua ion, we we e as ounded by he consid-
e able pa icipa ion and wa m ecep ion ha his issue o magazén
ea ned om schola s all o e he globe. Appa en ly, a new jou nal
