Are seed and information circulation networks related to the crop diversity and resilience of smallholder farms? A study protocol

Abstract

Smallholder farming is predominant in regions that are particularly subject to climate change worldwide, especially drylands, and particularly suffer from an increase in climatic shocks. In this context, crop diversity is considered as an important asset for the resilience of smallholders who have limited financial and material capitals, infrastructures and technologies. However, knowledge is limited about the processes enhancing smallholders’ access to crop diversity. Seed and associated information circulation patterns are considered as a major driver of crop diversity availability and access, although which circulation patterns enhance the availability of a large diversity pool at the collective level and its access for farmers remains matter of debate. The research protocol presented here, designed in the ARISER project (Access to crop diversity and small farms’ resilience to climate variability in African drylands: The role of seed and information networks) funded by the European Research Council, is developed to address these critical gaps. This protocol was designed for collecting comparable longitudinal and panel data across diverse contexts to assess: (i) differences in farms’ seed and associated information networks, and their socioeconomic drivers; (ii) whether these differences in farm’s networks relate to differences in their level of crop diversity and temporal turnover, (iii) whether they relate to pluriannual indicators of farms’ resilience to shocks, mainly the temporal stability of crop production and households' ability to meet their food and financial needs over time. ARISER protocol is the first of this kind, covering four consecutive years and 2000 households in three different although comparable study sites. We thus believe that sharing this protocol and the challenges we met along its design, test and implementation can be of interest for the design of future research in this domain and worth to be shared with our research community. This protocol is expected to improve the general understanding of how seed and related information networks affect smallholders’ ability to use crop diversity in the face of disturbances, and to which extent this is mediated by socioeconomic inequalities. Such understanding is needed to improve decision-making in the seed sector and better address the specific challenges that smallholders face in adapting to global changes.
