A mosphe ic Pa icles (Ae osols)
Unlike he gases lis ed abo e, many
ae osol-associa ed compounds a e
inco po a ed in o snow and hen pass
in o he glacial ice a chi es wi h li le pos -
deposi ional modi ica ion. As a esul ,
hese compounds ha e been s udied in
ice-co e in es iga ions, and iden i ying
empo al pa e ns in he abundance and
composi ion o a mosphe ic pa icles was
a majo ocus o his yea - ound sampling
campaign.
The Summi da a on he ionic com-
pounds in ae osol (Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+,
Ca2+, Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, MSA) a e cha ac-
e ized by spikes indica i e o speci ic epi-
sodes o anspo (CMU, LGGE). Some
o he ae osols (e.g., MSA, NH4+) also
show clea seasonal a ia ions. Analyses a e
now ocused on ela ing he spikes o simi-
la pa e ns in o he anspo ace s and
o known e en s such as episodes o i e.
Du ing he 1997-98 s udy pe iod he
na u al adionuclide ace s 7Be and 210Pb
showed no sign o he b oad win e maxi-
mum cha ac e is ic o sea-le el si es in he
A c ic (UNH). A simila lack o win e
peaks also was obse ed du ing he only
o he p e ious yea - ound a mosphe ic
sampling p og am on he ice shee
(1988-1989 a Dye 3, 2.5 km ele a ion
