Sukadana (o SuJcudana). — A Sukudana a mass o hills 1,000 o 2,000 ee high ise
igh om he seasho e. They a e well o es ed, bu he e a e many plan a ions o
du ians and o he ui upon hei slopes and many clea ings in he neighbo hood.
The sea is e y shallow nea he coas ; o he wise i would ha e been a good collec ing
g ound o me,1 as animal li e is abundan in he neighbo hood. The inhabi an s
a e all Malays excep a ew Chinese ade s and small plan e s.
Sempang Ri e . — The coun y along he Sempang Ri e is low and swampy, e y
li le abo e high wa e , as is also nea ly all wes Bo neo nea he coas . The lowe
pa o he p incipal a luen , he Semandang, is also low and la . The headwa e s
o bo h i e s a e among he hills. The low coun y is o he mos pa hea y o es ,
wi h a s ip o clea ing along he i e banks. The hilly coun y is inhabi ed by
Dyaks and he e he e is compa a i ely li le i gin o es emaining. The g ea e
pa o he su ace is co e ed wi h seconda y jungle. A ew hinoce oses a e said o
inhabi he uppe Sempang abou Ba u Dayeu (o Dajeuh). A much la ge ca

Ma an (o Ma ai) Ri e . — The Sungei Ma an en e s he Sempang a he ajah's
kampong ( illage) called Sempang. I camped abou 12 miles up (A hou s) a a place
called Ma an. Fo me ly he e was a la ge kampong he e bu i was abandoned
wen y o hi y yea s since. Mos o he neighbo hood is la ge seconda y jungle.
The hill called Ma an was close by. Animal li e was e y abundan , and o ang-u ans
plen i ul. The e a e no pe manen illages now upon he Sungei Ma an, excep
on he slopes o he hill called Sepunchok, abou 2 hou s abo e Sempang, whe e
he e a e eigh amilies.
Moun Palung. — Palung is 1,110 me e s in heigh . I ascended Pan i and emained
one nigh ; saw no mammals high up. Pan i [no shown on map] is one o he hills o
Palung. I is somewhe e abou 3,500 ee . Rhinoce oses a e said o inhabi he
lowlands abou he base o Palung. No api o ban ing (Bos) in his pa o Bo neo.
Sou hwes Bo nean mainland, June 17-Sep embe 29, 1908.
Kendawangan Ri e . — The coun y along he lowe Kendawangan Ri e , as else-
whe e in wes Bo neo, is mos ly swamp, jus abo e high-wa e ma k. Occasional
highe pa ches and ac s occu which always emain d y and a e called "pema ong,"
abou wha we call "islands" in swamps o "hummocks" in Flo ida. The e a e no
hills close o he lowe i e excep a Mankol. A Lanchu , 30 miles om he mou h,
he e is qui e a la ge ac o d y land ex ending back o Moun Kedio, 4 miles om
he i e . Abou Kalang Anye , a Malay kampong o h ee houses, 70 miles om he
mou h, he banks become highe , wi h bu li le swamp. A ew miles highe up he
hilly and olling coun y is eached, he Dyak coun y, whe e mos o he o iginal
jungle has been des oyed and now co e ed wi h seconda y jungle, sc ub, and "alang

han on he Sempang, and a less han in sou heas Bo neo, whe e he na i es we e all
disa med se e al yea s ago. The Dyaks kill a mo e wi h hei "be an ik, " o spea
aps, han by shoo ing, excep in he case o o ang-u an. The Dyaks a e ex emely
ond o he mea o hese, and i is useless o look o o angs anywhe e in he neighbo -
hood o a Dyak se lemen . I could hea no hing o Sus ga gan ua, and p obably i
does no occu in ha pa o Bo neo, no could I hea any hing o he " imau, " o
ige , which was said o inhabi he Sempang dis ic . A ew hinoce oses a e said o
inhabi he neighbo hood o Moun Kedio and a ew sapi u an (Bos sondaicus) on i s
wes slopes on he headwa e s o he li le i e Tinga . This is he only place on o
nea he wes coas o Bo neo whe e wild ca le occu . The Malays old me hey also
exis ed in some places on he uppe Pasaguan Ri e — ha is he nex la ge i e no h
o he Kendawangan. The coun y abou Moun Kedio is uninhabi ed, and he e is
said o be much animal li e he e. Fi y o six y yea s ago he dis ic was inhabi ed
by Dyaks, bu hese, becoming in ol ed in wa wi h he Malay ajah, le hei homes
and led in o he in e io . All o e his co ne o Bo neo occu sligh ly ele a ed
sandy ac s co e ed wi h small ees (o smalle ees han he su ounding o es );
hese a e locally called ' ' padang, ' ' which is Malay o meadow. Much o his land and
a good deal o he d ie o es was bu ned o e six o se en yea s ago, du ing a pe iod o
excessi e d ough . No ain ell o ou o i e mon hs, a mos unusual occu ence in
any pa o Bo neo, whe e o dina ily ain alls e e y 'mon h in he yea , and he e is
no p ope d y season. The ollowing animals, in addi ion o some al eady men ioned,
we e well known o he na i es, bu none was ob ained du ing his ip: Mydaus,
called bobo by Malay and kalinsida by Dyaks; Rei h osclu us; Fells nebulosa,
imau dahan; Fells ma mo a a? , a wild ca wi h a la ge ail, was caugh by a Malay
in a sna e, bu o some eason was no b ough o me; Pa adoxu us philippinensis;
Gymnu a, local name angkis.
Ba u Ju ong.— Ba u Ju ong is he sou he ly poin o a ange o hills which s e ch
no h-no heas o Mankol on he Kendawangan Ri e . I ancho ed in a small s ai
be ween Pulo I as and he mainland. Two o h ee Malay amilies li ed he e and had
hei clea ings. Pigs we e plen i ul; kijang (mun jacs) and usa we e also common,
bu he Malays we e con inually a e hem wi h hei dogs. Sou h o his he e a e no
inhabi an s in he sou hwes co ne o Bo neo, and un il ecen ly none on he sou h
coas wes o he Sungei Jelai. La ely, howe e , abou a dozen amilies o Malays
ha e made clea ings on he lowe cou se o he Sungei Aye Hi am Besa . Animals
we e said o be plen i ul, especially usa, abou Tanjong Kepala, whe e he e is said
o be la ge ac s o sho g ass. I saw wo o angs and he sa ongs (nes s) o many mo e
abou 2 miles eas o Ba u Ju ong, whe e I sho one emale.
Mankol. — Mankol lies along he Kendawangan Ri e o abou 2 miles. The e
a e abou 25 o mo e houses al oge he . A his poin he no h end o he ange o
hills (400 o 800 ee high) app oaches he i e . Animals we e sca ce, as mos o he
people had guns, and he jungle in he hills and along he base was ull o old je a s and
paga s ( aps and sna es). A ew o angs we e said o occu , bu I saw no aces.
Lanchu . — Lanchu is now wi hou inhabi an s. I was o me ly he mos impo -
an illage on he i e and he esidence o he ajah. The g ound along he i e
is qui e high and d y and co e ed wi h seconda y jungle and long g ass o some dis-

clea ings co e ed wi h sc ub and coa se g ass. The imbe is e y good, con aining

nea he Sampanahan Ri e and Pamukang Bay. This ange o hills is e iden ly an

ancien island, joined o he mainland by he ele a ion o he land and also by sil ing
up a wide ac o mang o e swamp lying in he in e ening space. As one ascends
he i e , a ew miles om he bay, e idences o ele a ion become e e ywhe e isible
in he masses o limes one co al p ojec ing om he swampy su ace. In many cases
he la su ace o he ancien ee is bu a ew inches below he mud o ac ually on he
su ace. A li le a he an i egula line o limes one hills, mos ly wi h p ecipi ous
and wa e wo n sides, uns in a gene al di ec ion pa allel wi h he coas . The
unclea ed land is all hea y o es . Many old clea ings and some new exis in he
neighbo hood o he i e s. The popula ion o he coas is made up o Bugis, Banje ,
and o he Mohammedan Malay ibes. Inland is a la ge Dyak (pagan) popula ion.
The Du ch annexed his dis ic in 1905.
Pangkallahan (o Bangkallaan) Ri e . — Kampong Pangkallahan is abou 7 miles
up he i e o he same name and is he esidence o he mankoh, o head o he Dyaks
o he dis ic . The coun y is co e ed wi h splendid o es , wi h only a ew clea -
ings. The e a e anges and sca e ed hills o p ecipi ous limes one ock. Animals
seemed sca ce, as usual in Dyak dis ic s, e e y hing hun ed o o d i en away by'
he Dyaks and hei dogs. They ha e e y ew guns and no powde . Abou a hal
mile abo e he illage is he lowe en ance o he Temmelung o unnel o he Pang-
kallahan. This unnel ca e, h ough which he i e lows, swa ms wi h ba s as well as
wi h edible bi ds'-nes swi s, hund eds o housands o hei nes s being collec ed
annually. I could no de ise any way o ca ching he ba s, as I had no ne and had
no b ough a gun o ea o a capsize, he e being a dange ous apid nea he lowe
end o he unnel. The Temmelung mus be abou 2 miles long, judging by he ime
we ook passing h ough i . I is h ough limes one ock. I do no hink he oo
was anywhe e e y hick, a some places only 2 o 3 ya ds. Tha pa o he coun y
is ull o limes one hills and ocks all honeycombed wi h ca es and passages. Bu
ba s did no seem o be p esen in he hund eds o holes I isi ed, excep an occasional
indi idual which I could no secu e. Judging om he noise, o he ligh om he
o ches did li le bu accen ua e he gloom, he e mus be hund eds o housands in
he Temmelung. Ano he unnel occu s a he up he same i e , bu I did no
isi i , as i was said o be e y di icul o passage excep by a e y small canoe.
Sa a ok Ri e . — The Sa a ok is a small i e lowing in o Klumpang Bay. Two
Dyak houses s ood in a small new clea ing. Back o his and ex ending eas wa d o
nea ly 2 miles was a la ge ac o alang alang ( all, coa se g ass) co e ing se e al hun-
d ed ac es. The ; appea ed o be a good many usa he e, bu he g ass, 4 o 5 ee
high, made i e y di icul o shoo any hing. When he g ass is bu ned o in he d y
season he place is said o be equen ed by a he d o sapi u an (Bos sondaicus). The e
we e no acks o hese a he ime o my isi . Mos o my collec ing was done nea
some limes one hills and ocks abou a mile wes wa d in he mids o splendid o es .
Only he ed P esby is was seen he e; nea he coas only he black one exis ed.
Besides he animals sho in Klumpang Bay I saw he long- ailed and he pig- ailed
macaques and P esby is c is a a.
Pamukang o Tjengal Bay, Ma ch 17-Ap il 7, 1908, and Ma ch 23-Ap il 13, 1909.
Musangs we e gene ally sca ce excep he angalunga, which was common. I
le mos o hose go which I caugh in aps. The Mydaus was well known, bu no
specimens we e ob ained. Gymnu a mus be e y common, as one o en smel hem
in he jungle, al hough none we e ob ained. The pig- ailed macaque was wice me
wi h in d o es, bu none we e secu ed. I me wi h Rei h osciu us wice on Buki
Ba u. I was unning on he g ound in hea y o es . I s mo emen s we e so quick
I could no shoo i . I s big bushy ail, ca ied high o e i s back, made he animal
e y conspicuous. I was much su p ised o ind ha i is a g ound squi el. The
headman o he Bajaus a Sungei Manungul, Pamukang Bay, said he e used o be
some hinos in ha locali y, bu he had seen no aces o yea s.

a e s ill mos ly hea y o es . The line o he bay p obably coincides wi h ha o a
aul . The hills a e mos ly ed la e i e, bu a line o limes one s e ches sou hwes -
wa d no a om he head o he bay. Animal li e is ai ly plen i ul. Ban ing (Bos
sondaicus) we e said o occu especially a ound he head o he bay.
Pulo Lamuko an, May 7-10, 1907. Pulo Lamuko an is he la ges o he Bu ong
Islands, and lies abou 10 miles o he mainland o Bo neo. I is abou 4 miles long
by 1 mile wide. I consis s o a long idge wi h a low ock nea he middle o he
island. The highes poin is nea he sou he n end and is nea ly 1,000 ee in heigh .
Mos o he su ace is now clea ed and he lowe pa s en i ely plan ed wi h coconu s,
which a e e y ine and heal hy. The only hea y o es emaining co e s he highes
summi and he c es o he idge on he sou he n pa o he island, and a smalle
piece on he summi o he no he n idge. The soil seems e ile and he su ace is
no e y ocky, excep upon he sho e. The o es ees a e e y la ge in he emain-
ing jungle. The o he islands in he g oup, ou in numbe , a e smalle and ha e
been en i ely clea ed and plan ed wi h coconu s. The inhabi an s a e Malays
om Sambas. A Sciu as i a us, a Macacus cynomolgus, a la ge pig, and h ee o
mo e a s cons i u e he mammalian auna. Pigs a e no now e y nume ous, ha ing
been la gely hun ed o by Chinese om he mainland, who employ dogs. Pigs we e
o me ly e y abundan upon he o he islands o he g oup (Pena a and Kebun),
bu ha e been en i ely ex e mina ed upon hese since he clea ing o he jungle.

highes peak. F ui pigeons and Nicoba pigeons we e ai ly common.
Pulo Temaju, May 5-6, 1907. (Fi s isi ed by Doc o Abbo in 1905.) Pulo
Temaju is now mos ly clea ed and plan ed wi h coconu . The only hea y o es
emaining co e s he summi and uppe slopes o he highes peak. The e a e no
mammals excep Sciu us p ose pinx and a s. The coconu ees a e no e y p o-
duc i e and seem much diseased.
Pulo Da u, May 2-4, 1907. Pulo Da u lies 21 miles om he coas o Bo neo. I
is abou 1| miles long by h ee- ou hs mile wide. I is e y hilly (moun ainous)
and ocky, and ises o abou 1,000 ee . I is co e ed wi h hea y o es , excep
a some places on he eas side, whe e some clea ings ha e been made and a ew
coconu s plan ed. The clea ings a e now o e g own wi h la ge seconda y jungle,
as he a s swa m o such an ex en i is impossible o g ow any hing. Squi els
(Sciu us i a us g oup) we e plen i ul. No monkeys. I pu ou abou o y a
aps one nigh . Nea ly e e y one was sp ung in he mo ning, bu many o he a s
had been de ou ed by land o he mi c abs. Whi e ui pigeons and Nicoba pigeons
we e common. The e a e no sand beaches, bu plen y o esh wa e lows ou benea h
he ocks, on he eas side a any a e, be ween high and low wa e ma ks. Mus
" a us" appea ed o be mo e abundan hen M. "lingensis," bu he he mi c abs
showed ma ked p e e ence o he la e and spoiled mos o hose caugh .
Pulo Panebangan, May 16-26, June 2-3, and Sep embe 20-21, 1907. Pulo
Panebangan lies 8 miles om Pulo Maja, which is p ac ically he mainland o Bo neo.
I is abou 4 miles long by 2 o 3 wide, con aining abou 6,000 o 7,000 ac es, I is
e y hilly, sca cely any le el g ound. The highes poin is said o be 1,700 ee .
I is uninhabi ed and co e ed wi h dense jungle. Ra ans (o an almos alueless
a ie y) abound, and he jungle is so ma ed up wi h a ans and hei lagella as
o be impene able. In some places he jungle seems o ha e been clea ed a some

p e ious pe iod, as a he head o he small bay on he no h side. Macacus cyno nolgus
was he only monkey seen. The e is no lo ong (P esby ia). The a u a is p obably
ai ly common, as I equen ly hea d i . I only ac ually saw he h ee which we e
sho . I hough I saw and hea d Nannosciu us on one occasion, bu am no ce ain.
The e is no napu o la ge agulus. No dee occu s; no o e acks seen; and he
angalunga apped was he only musang seen. The small Hipposide os was e y
common, lying abou in he day ime; he la ge one was less common. The e we e
se e al o he species o ba s lying abou in he o es in dayligh , bu I ailed o
secu e any. No Rhinolophus we e seen. Ano he musang is said o occu and also
a ed lying squi el. Pigs we e plen i ul. All hose no iced upon he beach seemed
o be males. We did no once see a small one ou o wo o h ee dozen indi iduals.
Possibly he old males app op ia e he beaches and ee s, which a e he bes eeding
g ounds, and d i e away in ude s. The pigs we e all e y lean and gaun . Up o
he p esen he e a e no inhabi an s, al hough he e a e many du ians, mangos, and
chempadak. We hea d ha some Ka ima a people p opose o come in July, 1907,
and o m plan a ions.
Pulo Pelapis, May 29-June 1, 1907. Pelapis, a g oup o ou islands, lies 3^ miles
sou hwes o Panebangan and 17 miles om Ka ima a. The islands a e all hilly and
ocky and co e ed wi h o es . The highes poin is abou 1,200 ee . The o al a ea
is abou 5,000 ac es. Sou h Island (also called Pelapis Tengah) is he la ges and is
nea ly 2| miles long. All collec ing was done upon his island. Some yea s ago some
Malays and Ka ima a people se led upon Sou h Island and a med some plan a ions

dis inc g izzling is conspicuous. The indi idual hai s a e almos
whi ish a hei bases, g adually changing o a da k b ownish abou
he middle po ion, ollowed by a well-ma ked b igh hazel ing and
a blackish e minal band. A mo e o less well- denned blackish-b own
s ipe ex ends along he back o he animal. The pelage di e ence
appea s o be independen o season. The h ee specimens showing
he g izzling we e collec ed in Feb ua y, Ap il, and No embe ,

belie e in 1907, bu he di e ences poin ed ou hen, hold in he
main, as may be seen on e e ence o he able o measu emen s on
page 121. The e is no doub as o he dis inc ness o he wo o ms.
The Suma an specimens ha e smalle colla s and he ligh a ea o
he nose is mo e conspicuous han in he single Bo nean skin.
Bea s seem o be p e y common whe e e he e is a plan a ion o cocoanu s. Some
o he ees a e said o be dead o dying as a esul o hei dep eda ions. The bea s
climb up and ea he "hea " ou o he palm. In a email g o e o abou nine y
ees, nea Tanjong Pamukang, he bea s had des oyed abou hal he ees. I

Colo . — Type: Uppe su ace o head, neck, body, ail, ee , and

spo ing is ound on he ee , and a a he conspicuous whi e spo is
