ABSTRACT
The ansi ion om so wa e enginee o echnical lead (TL) ep esen s a pi o al ca ee shi ha demands
mas e y o bo h echnical expe ise and leade ship capabili ies. While so wa e enginee s p ima ily ocus on
coding and p oblem-sol ing, TLs mus balance echnical p o iciency wi h esponsibili ies such as p ojec
managemen , eam coo dina ion, communica ion ac oss s akeholde s, and s a egic decision-making. This pape
p esen s a sys ema ic e iew conduc ed in acco dance wi h PRISMA s anda ds, syn hesizing insigh s om six
pee - e iewed s udies published be ween 2014 and 2024. The e iew iden i ies ou cen al hemes ha unde pin
a success ul ansi ion: (1) leade ship skills, including communica ion, empa hy, and con lic esolu ion; (2)
managing eam dynamics and os e ing collabo a ion; (3) balancing echnical and manage ial esponsibili ies; and
(4) emb acing con inuous lea ning o adap o e ol ing echnologies and leade ship p ac ices. Findings highligh
ha e ec i e TLs ac as bo h echnical specialis s and acili a o s o eam pe o mance, b idging he gap be ween
o ganiza ional goals and enginee ing execu ion. The e iew unde sco es he impo ance o de eloping emo ional
in elligence, decision-making s a egies, and adap abili y o manage he unce ain ies and complexi ies inhe en in
leade ship oles. O e all, his s udy con ibu es a s uc u ed amewo k o compe encies and s a egies ha can
suppo so wa e enginee s in mas e ing he ansi ion o echnical leade ship, o e ing guidance o indi iduals

INTRODUCTION
Responsibili ies o a echnical lead (TL) mean a signi ican shi in he li e and wo k o a so wa e enginee (1).
People end o assume ha he e olu ion o a so wa e enginee o a TL is linea , bu in eal sense i is a
ans o ma ion ha demands mas e y o echnical and leade ship skills (2). O e yea s as hey climb he ca ee
ladde , so wa e enginee s a e aced wi h esponsibili ies ha equi e balancing hei echnical p owess while
ha ing o manage people, p ojec s, and make s a egic decisions (3). This ans o ma ion is indeed bene icial and
c ea es high p essu e and equi es he implemen a ion o new skills di e en om coding o sol ing p oblems in he
p og am (4).
A p ima y di icul y ha enginee s expe ience du ing his ansi ion is he change in designa ion om echnical doe
o echnical eache o supe iso (5). The esponsibili ies o a TL pe ain o p ojec managemen , p o iding

membe s, p oduc manage s, and o he ele an depa men s and ensu e ha hey a e on he same page ega ding
p ojec objec i es (7). Such communica ion may in ol e a combina ion o comp ehending complex echnical
in o ma ion oge he wi h explaining he same o non- echnical audiences (8). The ansi ion also p esen s he
enginee s he ac ics o handling ime cons ain s, esou ces as well as people (9). As opposed o he simplis ic and
well-de ined asks hey pe o m in hei p o essional p ac ice, TLs ha e o wo k wi h unce ain y, decide wha asks
a e mo e impo an , and mo i a e he eam o comple e he wo k on ime, while mee ing p ojec deadlines (4). This
change o ocus means ha he mindse shi s om a ocus on pe sonal p oduc i i y o he achie emen o g oup
goals, and hence emo ional in elligence, con lic managemen and mo i a ion skills would su ice he needs o
execu ing his esponsibili y (3).

METHODOLOGY

I ems o Sys ema ic Re iews and Me a-Analyses (PRISMA) s anda ds (10).

published be ween 2014 and 2024. Sea ch ph ases ha we e used included "Technical Lead," "So wa e Enginee ,"
"T ansi ion," "Team managemen in so wa e de elopmen ," "leade ship skills in ech," and "Technical lead
men o ing."
Inclusion and Exclusion C i e ia
The e iew's commi men o accessibili y and comp ehensi eness was demons a ed by i s inclusion c i e ion,
which manda ed ha pape s be published in English. The sys ema ic e iew included he mos ecen and pe inen
esea ch in he a ea by conside ing a icles published be ween 2014 and 2024. In addi ion, we elimina ed a icles
ha we e ele an o he opic o he e iew, bu we kep all o he o iginal sou ce ma e ial.

RESULTS

change since i is appa en ha he compe encies o a leade a e di e en om hose o a p og amme (13).

TLs (15, 16). In many o ganiza ions, TLs a e he in e ace be ween he op managemen and he enginee ing s a .

enginee ing eam is inspi ed and wo king in unison wi h he es o he o ganiza ion (5). Based on he indings o
he s udies included, high-pe o ming TLs a e he ones who can juggle he con en and he p ocess esponsibili ies;
in o he wo ds, he TLs emain echnically skilled and a he same ime assume a leade ship ole o encou aging
coope a ion and c ea i i y (12, 14, and 15).

eams (5). When he enginee is p omo ed o TL, his o he ole ansi ions om one being a wo ke con ibu ing
owa ds he speci ic unc ion o being he one held accoun able o he eam’s pe o mance (12, 16). This shi
en ails managing he s eng hs and weakness o indi iduals in he eams, assignmen o asks and du ies, and
conduci e eam owa ds he a aining o g oup objec i es (15). The e iews o he s udies discussed he e indica e

Balancing Technical and Manage ial Responsibili ies
Ano he challenge ha migh be conside ed as c i ical while ansi ioning om a so wa e enginee posi ion o TL is
he shi o ocus be ween echnical and managemen esponsibili ies (12). The li e a u e indica es ha many
enginee s may expe ience his as hey a e mo e accus omed o wo king h ough echnical issues (5, 16). Howe e ,
as a TL, one’s main esponsibili ies include how o wo k wi hin imelines, liaise wi h o he di e en s akeholde s,
and ensu e success o p ojec . Se e al esea ch sugges ha , he e is always a high demand o TLs who should be
in a posi ion o p o ec hei echnical compe encies while ansi ioning o he manage ial pos (13, 15). Hence hey
model o he junio enginee s ha i is possible o be a dep h echnical specialis while a he same ime aking
b oade leade ship oles (5). Fu he mo e, hose people a e conside ed be e leade s because hey can discuss
speci ics o he echnical pa and make a decision abou u u e p ojec s eps (14).
Con inuous Lea ning and Adap abili y
The wo k o a TL is desc ibed as complex and he enhanced lea ning capaci y as a co e concep om se e al
in es iga ions (13). Because o he con inuous g ow h o echnologies such as A i icial In elligence, Machine
Lea ning, and La ge Language Models, TLs mus emain upda ed on he la es ends in so wa e de elopmen (4,
16). A he same ime, hey ha e also o be upda ed he la es leade ship s a egies and he managemen echniques
so ha hei eams can pe o m compe i i ely and c ea i ely (15). This means ha he e is no b eak om lea ning,
and de elopmen is no only echnical, bu leade ship as well. The esea ch indica es ha TLs who dedica e ime o
unde s anding eam managemen , p ojec managemen , and emo ional managemen a e in a be e posi ion o
add ess he demands o he ole (12). This means ha o ganiza ions ha in es in ongoing leade ship de elopmen
ini ia i es o hei TLs a e likely o achie e highe eam pe o mance and be e p ojec esul s (14).
CONCLUSION
P omo ing om so wa e enginee o echnical lead en ails me ging o echnical compe encies wi h leade ship skills
and as indica ed by he esea ch s udy, TLs should possess good communica ion, empa hy and con lic sol ing
skills. Managing eam dynamics is a challenge, whe e TLs ansi ion om being pa o a small eam o acili a ing
he eam’s ou pu , ensu ing ha he oles a e well de ined and esponsibili ies a e clea ly assigned wi hou being
o e ly-p esc ip i e and unde mining he eam’s au onomy. Fu he mo e manage ial and echnical unc ion is a
con lic , bu TLs who keeps upda ed he echnical knowledge and ake up manage ial esponsibili ies a e
app ecia ed. The e is always some o m o lea ning and adap a ion as TLs need o keep upda ing hemsel es wi h
he la es echnologies and leade ship app oaches necessa y o os e mo e inno a ion and success in hei eams.
