РЕЗЮМЕ: В статье представлен обзор фауны морских анемон, собранных и/или
задокументированных на фото- и видеоизображениях в западной части Берингова
моря: в районах массива Вулканологов, Карагинского и Олюторского заливов и
Корякского склона. Всего выявлено около 80 видов и приведен аннотированный
список морских анемон отрядов Ac inia ia, Co allimo pha ia и Zoan ha ia. Это первое
обобщение данных о видовом разнообразии морских анемон, обитающих в западной
части Берингова моря, основанное на недавних коллекционных сборах и подводных
фото- и видеосъемках.

Sanamyan, 2020 (see Sanamyan, Sanamyan,
1998, 2006, 2015, 2020).

Be ing Sea.
Ma e ial and me hods
The p esen wo k is based pa ly on he collec ed
specimens, pa ly on he pho og aphic images and
ideo eco ds aken du ing he ollowing expedi ions:
1) C uise 22 o RV Akademik Ms isla Keldysh
in 1990, collec ions we e made by Sigsbee awl,

Un il ecen ime deep-wa e auna o sea
anemones o Be ing Sea was p ac ically un-
known wi h only one species, Liponema b e i-
co ne (McMu ich, 1893) eco ded a he dep hs
g ea e han 100 m: one specimen o his species
was epo ed om 1019 m in he Bowe s Bank,
one specimen om 580–680 m and 25 speci-
mens om 135 m in eas e n pa o Be ing Sea
(Dunn, Bakus, 1977; Eash-Loucks, Fau in,
2012). In 2001 we desc ibed Neohalcampa
sheikoi Sanamyan, 2001 om Ka aginsky Is-
land ( om 240–580 m) (Sanamyan, 2001), and
ecen ly ga e i s p elimina y da a on 11 spe-
cies eco ded on he Vulcanologo Massi (San-
amyan, Sanamyan, 2018; Galkin e al., 2019;
K ylo a e al., 2019; Mo duho ich e al., 2019;
Rybako a e al., 2020) and desc ibed ou new
species om he Vulcanologo Massi and
Ko yak slope (Sanamyan e al., 2021).

(Fig. 1): Vulcanologo Massi in he sou h o Ko-
mando sky Basin (sou hwes e n pa o he Be ing
Sea) up o maximal dep hs 4277 m (Komando
G aben); Ko yak slope be ween he Cape Olyu o -
sky and he Cape Na a in, Ka aginsky and Olu o -
sky Gul s and con inen al slope be ween he Cape
Oze noy and he Cape Olyu o sky (wes e n pa o
he Be ing Sea). The geomo phology o he Vulca-
nologo Massi is gi en acco ding o Ba ano e al.,
2021. The lis o s a ions whe e sea anemones we e
eco ded is gi en in Supplemen Table 1.
Collec ed specimens we e ixed in 4% bu e ed
o malin o mo phological s udy and small pieces
cu om la ge specimens we e ixed in 96% e hanol
and kep in e ige a o o molecula analysis. Mo-
lecula da a we e used o sepa a e species o Ac inos-
d edging and manned subme sibles Mi -1 and Mi -
2, Shi sho Ins i u e o Oceanology o Russian Acad-
emy o Sciences;

using Wiza d SV Genomic DNA Pu i ica ion Sys-
em (P omega) ollowing he manu ac u e ’s p o o-
col. The mi ochond ial (12S RNA, 16S RNA,
COIII) and nuclea (18S RNA and 28S RNA) gene
agmen s we e ampli ied using published p ime s
and p o ocols (Gelle , Wal on, 2001; Bocha o a,
2015; Sanamyan e al., 2018).

o he Piip Volcano in he sou hwes e n pa o he
Be ing Sea and on he Ko yak slope in he wes e n
pa o he Be ing Sea. In addi ion, in hese c uises
and c uises o he RV P o esso Le anido (c uise
code 201999) in 2019, RV P o esso Kagano sky
(c uise 37) in 2020 and FFT Vale iy Maslako in
2021, eshly collec ed specimens we e pho og aphed

(es ima ed o be up o 40 cm in leng h). One speci-
men was pho og aphed a ached on he s alk o a
glass sponge Hyalonema, co e ed wi h a colony o
zoan ha ian Epizoan hus a uus (on he sou he n
slope o he Vulcanologo Massi ), ano he ap-
pea ed si ing di ec ly on he bo om (in he small
high in Komando sky Basin). This e y in e es ing
species was epo ed o he i s ime in he Be ing
Sea and he cu en eco d is mos no he n and mos
deep-wa e one o his species (3435–3948 m).
P e ious eco ds we e om 13ºN o 23ºS on he Eas
Paci ic Rise, 32ºS Paci ic An a c ic Ridge on he
dep hs 2235–2650 m (Daly, 2006; Desb uye es e
al., 2006) and om 27.25ºS Sou h Eas Indian Ridge
in Indian Ocean on he dep h 3005 m (Ge des e al.,
2021). Taxonomic posi ion o his species is no
clea (see Rod íguez e al., 2014; Xiao e al., 2019).

mos no he n and mos deep-wa e (3393–3906 m)
eco d o his species. P e iously Ac ine nus obus-
us was known om Paci ic coas s o Japan: o igi-
nally i was desc ibed om he ma e ial collec ed o
Japan by Challenge Expedi ion (3429 m, He wig,
1882; Ca lg en, 1949) and hen epo ed by Uchida
(2007) om he same egion om 1008–1200 m.

MATERIAL. LV-75-21, 55.4818ºN 167.2573ºE,
2841 m, one specimen pho og aphed.
REMARKS. Small inconspicuous sea anemone
wi h wo m-like column hidden in subs a e pho o-
g aphically documen ed on he no he n slope o he
Vulcanologo Massi a 2841 m is iden i ied as a
membe o he genus Edwa dsiella (sub amily Ed-
wa dsiellinae, see Sanamyan, Sanamyan, 2021 o
his sub amily name). I s a he long ape ing scapu-
lus and uppe pa o he scapus, co e ed by pe id-
e m, p ojec om subs a e and a e well isible.
Membe s o his genus li e in c e ices in ock, be-

No h Paci ic Edwa dsiella was eco ded only once:
a shallow wa e species o his genus was ecen ly

REMARKS. A leas i e o he species o Ed-
wa dsiidae may be ecognized in he pho o and ideo
iles aken by ROV Comanche 18.
Fou o hem we e pho og aphed bu no collec -
ed on he Vulcanologo Massi . All ou species a e
p esen on he no he n slope o he Vulcanologo
Massi and one o hem is eco ded also on he
sou he n slope o he Piip Volcano. The la e spe-
cies, pho og aphed a 1611–1933 m, li es in mud,
has pale- ose colo a ion, small o al disc and a he
long no nume ous (abou 10) en acles. Remaining
h ee species we e eco ded deepe han 2000 m: wo
o hem li e in mud, bo h a e whi e, one has up o 16
sho en acles, ano he abou 30 long en acles (Fig.
2D), and one species inhabi s shallow c e ices on
he s ones (Fig. 2E). The la e species has cylind i-
cal column, scapus co e ed by pe ide m, sho whi e
scapulus and abou 26 hin whi e en acles.
Ano he species o Edwa dsiidae was eco ded
on he Ko yak slope a 356–884 m (Fig. 2F). The
specimens a e nume ous (mo e han 1330 specimens
seen on he pho og aphs bu no collec ed), li e on
muddy bo om. This species has abou 16 hin long
en acles, en acula c own up o 4 cm in diame e .
O al disc has eigh da k spo s a anged in a ci cle.
The body is up o 5 mm in diame e , scapulus
anspa en wi h whi e s okes in uppe pa and
da k- ed im. This species eco ded in he back-
g ound communi y a ound cold seep ields which
included he sea pen Halip e is c . willemoesi (Köl-
like , 1880) wi h he commensal ophiu oid As e o-
nyx and he echinoid B isas e la i ons (Agassiz,
1898), and also in p oximi y o bac e ial ma s a cold
seeps (K ylo a e al., 2018), bu no eco ded di ec -
ly on he seeps and bac e ial ma s. Howe e , mos
dense popula ions o hese Edwa dsiidae, up o 100
specimens pe m2, was eco ded du ing he di e 16
(s a ion LV-82-16) a 356–415 m in he se lemen o
domina ed he e sea anemone Saga ioge on cali o -
nicus, whe e cold seeps ha e no been ound.

ogo Massi du ing ecen c uises in he Be ing Sea.
One la ge specimen was eco ded a ached o a
e ical ock wall on he sou he n slope o he Piip
Volcano a he dep h o abou 2700 m. Un o una e-

diame e , dome-shaped, column hidden below he
o al disc co e ed by en acles. Fo mo emen , i can
ake a cylind ical shape and oll on he sea bo om
(Dunn, Bakus, 1977, ig. 8). The colo a ies om
whi e o pale- ose o b igh - ose o pu ple. In he
p ocess o collec ing and ixa ion, he en acles all
o due o he con ac ion o he sphinc e muscle
loca ed a he base o each en acle, and mos p e-
se ed specimens a e de oid o he en acles (pa ial-

The p esen species s ongly esembles Lipone-
ma mul ico ne (Ve ill, 1880), known om No h

specimens om he Be ing Island (135 m), iden i ied

A achinsky and K ono sky Gul s. Also, his species
was pho og aphed in he i s echnical di e by ROV
in 2018 on he sou he n (Paci ic) side o Be ing
Island (Commande Islands) on 30–33 m and in
Chuko ka in he Senia in S ai (no he n pa o he
Be ing Sea) on he dep h 6–8 m (Fig. 5B; pe sonal
communica ion and pho o o Vik o Lyagushkin).

species is hexame ous wi h up o i e cycles o he
ma ginal en acles, 12 ( wo cycles) discal en acles
loca ed in he endocoels o he i s and he second
cycles. La ge specimens ha e abou 12 discal and 49
ma ginal en acles ( he a io is 1:4, as in C. pila us).
The heigh and diame e o he p ese ed specimens
is up o 16 mm. The e a e 12 pai s o pe ec mesen-

mos closely ela ed o he p esen specimens, i s
o iginal desc ip ion is based on nume ous specimens

The zooids densely co e he sponge s em composed

inhabi ed by o he o ganisms (hyd oids o sea anem-

Discussion
Abou 80 species sea anemones a e epo ed
o which 40 we e collec ed (36 species o Ac in-
ia ia, wo Co allimo pha ia and wo Zoan ha -
ia), o he species we e iden i ied basing on
pho o and ideo eco ds. 17 o hem we e iden-
i ied o he species le el (one basing on he
pho og aphs only), mos o emaining species
equi e desc ip ion as new species. 33 sea anem-
ones we e iden i ied o he genus le el (12
basing on pho og aphs only), se en o hese
gene a a e ep esen ed mo e han in one species
(Edwa dsia, C ib inopsis, U icina, Ac inos o-
la, c . Halcampa, Amphian hus, Phelliac is).
18 amilies we e iden i ied, i e o hem only on
he pho og aphs (Relican hidae, Edwa dsiidae,
P eac iniidae, Halcampidae, Halcampoididae).
16 amilies belong o he o de Ac inia ia (o e
70 species), one amily o he o de Co alli-
mo pha ia (Co allimo phidae, wo species in
wo gene a) and one o Zoan ha ia (Epi-
zoan hidae, wo species o Epizoan hus and
h ee no collec ed species on he pho og aphs
only). Only 13 species (11 species o Ac inia ia,
one o Co allimo pha ia and one o Zoan ha ia)
we e p e iously known o science bu ha e no
been epo ed o wes e n pa o he Be ing Sea
and only wo o hem, Liponema b e ico ne and
Me idium a cimen, we e epo ed o eas e n
pa o he Be ing Sea. Fou species o he
p esen ma e ial (Sicyonis deniso i, Sicyonis
kuzne so i, Ophiodiscus bukini and Tealidium

new o science (Sanamyan e al., 2021) and

Be ing Sea.
O he 17 species iden i ied in he p esen

Paci ic Ocean (Supplemen Table 2): Relican-
hus daphneae, P ychodac is pa ula, Liponema
b e ico ne, Ac inos ola aeculen a, S omphia
coccinea, Ac inauge e illii, Pa acalliac is
in ol ens, Me idium a cimen, Saga ioge on
cali o nicus and Co allimo phus pila us. Two
la e species we e p e iously ea ed as endem-
ics o no heas e n Paci ic by Eash-Loucks and
Fau in (2012: 49): “Species ha mos ly occu
abo e 2000 m (Co allimo phus pila us om
250 o 2026 m, and Saga ioge on cali o nicus
om 73 o a leas 1463 m) appea endemic o
he no heas e n Paci ic.” These au ho s s a ed
ha he g owing oxygen minimum zone (OMZ),
na u ally occu ing in No heas Paci ic, poses
he bigges h ea o hese species occu ing
wi hin he dep h ange o he OMZ in he no h-
eas e n Paci ic Ocean and said o ha e es ic ed
geog aphical anges. We disco e ed ha ange
o geog aphical dis ibu ion o hese species is
much wide and hey dis ibu ed also in no h-
wes e n Paci ic, whe e hey a e especially nu-
