The hyd olysis o UO 2+
2, NdIII, CeIII and CeIV ca ions, induced by he mal decomposi ion o u ea, was s udied.
Mo eo e , we in es iga ed bina y mix u es o u anyl and he lan hanides, as well as e na y mix u es o u anyl
and bo h lan hanides using CeIII o CeIV. The impac o he u ea con en and he empe a u e on he eac ion
kine ics and he o med p ecipi a e was e alua ed and he esul s a e in dep h discussed in ou a icle [1].
U anyl ions p ecipi a ed as ammonium diu ana e (ADU) wi h di e en s oichiome y unde he applied
condi ions. NdIII and CeIII ca ions showed a compa able pH e olu ion du ing hyd olysis and LnCO3OH p oduc s
we e iden ified, whe eas CeIV hyd olysed a a lowe pH and o med nanoc ys alline CeO2. Depending on he
u ea con en , a pa ial co-p ecipi a ion was obse ed o mix u es o UO 2+
2and NdIII. The p oduc s o CeIII
and CeIV hyd olysis we e also iden ified in he p ecipi a es o bina y u anyl and ce ium mix u es. Fo e na y
U/Nd/Ce mix u es, a simul aneous p ecipi a ion o NdIII and CeIII and a pa ial inco po a ion o he Ln phase
in o he ADU phase was obse ed, whe eas he p esence o CeIV/CeO2 esul ed in h ee indi idual phases.
The p ecipi a ion eac ion was ollowed-up by moni o ing he pH e olu ion and he me al concen a ion in he
supe na an , applying UV/Vis and ICP-MS. The o med p ecipi a es we e cha ac e ised by XRD and SEM.

Hyd olysis expe imen s
The da a o his da ase we e ob ained om samples collec ed du ing hyd olysis expe imen s, which we e
ca ied ou using he se -up shown in figu e 2. The eac ions ook place in a 100 mL h ee neck ound bo om
flask, which was loca ed in a empe ed oil ba h (see figu e 2, close-up). A coole was a ached o he middle
neck o he flask and he connec ed eci cula ing chille (Buchi F-105) was se o 9 °C. The solu ions’ empe a-
u e and he oom empe a u e we e measu ed using he mocouples ( empe a u e ange: −200 °C o 1370 °C),
connec ed o a he mome e (Ludwig Schneide Digi al-Measu ing Ins umen 65625), while he empe a u e
o he oil ba h was moni o ed using a s i ing pla e equipped wi h a he mocouple (VWR ad . VMS-C7).

A olume o 50 mL aqueous solu ion wi h an aimed mola me al concen a ion o 0.05 mol L−1 was gi en
in o he flask and he se -up was hea ed o he desi ed empe a u e. Upon eaching a s able empe a u e, an
ini ial sample o 2 mL was aken using wice a 1 mL pipe e (Eppendo Resea ch Plus, adjus able: 100 µL o
1000 µL). The sampling ime and empe a u es o he solu ion and he oil-ba h, as well as he oom empe a-
u e, we e no ed. A e wa ds, solid u ea was added o he solu ion, which dissol ed apidly. The ime o u ea
addi ion was also no ed and used as e e ence ime o u he e alua ions ( el = 0). Du ing each p ecipi a ion
eac ion, which ook up o 10 h, i was sampled e e y 25 min o 50 min as desc ibed o he ini ial sample.
Each sample was s o ed in a es ube and a e eaching empe a u es be ween 25 °C o 29 °C i s pH was
measu ed. Besides he pH, he sample- and oom- empe a u e we e logged. A e wa ds, he sample was
gi en in o a 4 mL glass ial wi h known mass. Fu he analyses we e ca ied ou using ICP-MS and UV/Vis.
A he end o he day o each expe imen , he second bu las sample was aken. The se -up an du ing he
nigh and a he ollowing mo ning (abou 25 h since addi ion o u ea), ano he sample was aken o de e mine
he final pH o he supe na an . A e wa ds, he hea sou ce was emo ed and he se -up was allowed o cool
o oom empe a u e. Upon eaching i , he emaining suspension was emo ed om he flask using a 5 mL
pipe e (VWR e gonomic high-pe o mance, adjus able: 1 mL o 5 mL). The suspension was dis ibu ed e enly
be ween 2 cen i uge ials (Falcon, 15 mL) and cen i uged o 15 min a 6500 pm. A e cen i uga ion, he

o an ohe 15 min a 6500 pm. The washing p ocedu e was in o al ca ied ou h ee imes. A e wa ds, he
p ecipi a e was ans e ed in o a 4 mL glass ial and d ied a 40 °C and 250 mba un il eaching a s able mass.
P ecu so solu ions
P ecu so solu ions we e p epa ed by dissol ing u anyl ni a e, neodymium(III) ni a e, ce ium(III) ni a e, and
ammonium hexani a oce a e(IV) in ul a-pu e wa e (R≥18.0 MΩ). A olume o 25 mL was p epa ed o he
UO 2+
2solu ion, while olumes o 10 mL we e p epa ed o each o he lan hanide ca ion solu ions. The sal was
weighed in o a olume ic flask o he co esponding olume and filled up wi h ul a-pu e wa e . A e wa ds,
he mass was emeasu ed o calcula e he solu ions’ densi y. An o e iew o he p epa ed p ecu so solu ions
is lis ed in able 1. I also includes he compound used as s a ing ma e ial, i s o igin and pu i y, he mass o

The expe imen al solu ion o he h ee expe imen s ha con ained only one lan hanide was gene a ed by
weighing he co esponding compound (see able 1) in o a 50.00(4) mL olume ic flask and dissol ing i in
ul a-pu e wa e . All o he expe imen al solu ions we e p epa ed by pipe ing he app op ia e olume o he
p ecu so solu ion(s) in o a 100 mL glass beake wi h known mass. The indi idual p ecu so solu ion olumes
we e calcula ed based on he aimed mola me al concen a ion o 0.05 mol L−1, he desi ed mola me al ac-
ions (lis ed in able 2), and a o al olume o 50 mL o expe imen al solu ion, aking he concen a ions lis ed
in able 1 in o accoun . A e he addi ion o a p ecu so solu ion, he mass was e-measu ed. The equi ed
amoun o wa e was calcula ed by sub ac ing he sum o he p ecu so solu ion olumes om he desi ed
o al olume o 50 mL. We assumed a wa e densi y o 1.00 g mL−1 and added he mass co esponding o he
calcula ed olume o wa e o he beake . The beake was placed on a balance and he mass was con inuously
moni o ed, he final one was no ed down.
The u ea con en is exp essed as R(u ea), co esponding o he n(u ea)
n(Mn+) a io and we used a ios o 26 and
52. All expe imen s we e ca ied ou wi h aimed mola me al concen a ions o 0.05 mol L−1, leading o cons an
u ea masses o each o he u ea a ios. Fo expe imen s wi h R(u ea) = 26, he aimed mass was 3.7538 g,
while i was 7.5075 g o expe imen s wi h R(u ea) = 52. The u ea used in each expe imen (Sigma-Ald ich
(99.0 % o 100.5 %, ACS eagen ) was weighed in o a glass beake and added o he empe ed expe imen al
solu ion a e he ini ial sampling.

The expe imen al condi ions we e adop ed om Wangle e al. [6], who in es iga ed he hyd olysis o ho ium by
he mal decomposi ion o u ea a 90 °C and 100 °C using R(u ea) a ios o 5, 25 and 50. In ou expe imen s,
we wan ed o use cons an o al mola me al amoun s, which equi ed cons an masses o u ea o each
R(u ea). We calcula ed u ea con en s o R(u ea) o 25 and 50, bu did no conside ha he u ea was gi en
in o a olume o 48 mL solu ion ins ead o 50 mL due o he ini ial sampling. Taking his in o accoun , ou
expe imen s we e pe o med wi h R(u ea) a ios o 26 and 52.

Du ing he indi idual hyd olysis expe imen s, up o 19 samples o he supe na an we e aken. The expe imen
ID was ex ended wi h an index as su fix o o m sample IDs. The sample aken p io o he addi ion o u ea
was ex ended wi h -00, leading o example o he sample ID OB-17-01-00. In he case o expe imen OB-
17-01 i was sampled 10 imes (OB-17-01-00 o OB-17-01-09) and a pho og aph o each sample was aken.
The pho og aphs a e loca ed in he olde OB-17-01 sample pho og aphs (see figu e 3) and a e named wi h
he co esponding sample ID (e. g. OB-17-01-00.jpg). A collage showing all pho og aphs is p esen ed as
figu e 4.
