THE TRIQUETRA PROJECT
FOREWORD
Cul u al He i age (CH) encompasses all angible and in an-
gible elemen s o cul u e and socie y ha a e conside ed alu-
able. I shapes indi idual and collec i e iden i ies, p o ides e -
idence o his o ical e en s and con ibu es o socie al wellbeing
h ough engagemen and in e ac ion. Howe e , he sa egua d-
ing o CH is becoming inc easingly challenging, pa icula ly
in he ace o Clima e Change (CC). Many CH monumen s
and si es a e cons an ly exposed o en i onmen al s esso s,
and in se e al cases, hey a e subjec ed o ex eme condi ions
exace ba ed by CC. This exposu e ende s hem ulne able o
a a ie y o isks, including land de o ma ion, looding, acid
ain, e osion and o he haza ds. These h ea s a e in ensi ying,
d i en bo h by clima ic shi s and an h opogenic p essu es,
pu ing CH asse s a signi ican isk o damage o e en o al
loss. Al hough ex ensi e esea ch has been conduc ed on he
p o ec ion o cul u al he i age, he e emains a c i ical gap in
sys emic, mul i-haza d app oaches a egional and Eu opean
le els ha can e icien ly iden i y, assess and mi iga e isks o
ensu e he highes possible le el o p ese a ion.
The TRIQUETRA p ojec (“Toolbox o assessing and
mi iga ing Clima e Change isks and na u al haza ds h ea en-
ing cul u al he i age”) p oposes a echnological oolbox and
me hodological amewo k o ackling CC isks and na u al
haza ds h ea ening CH, in he mos e icien way possible.
TRIQUETRA was launched in Janua y 2023, unded by he
Ho izon Eu ope p og amme (GA No. 101094818). The p ojec
aims o c ea e a comp ehensi e decision suppo amewo k
o isk iden i ica ion, quan i ica ion and mi iga ion conce ning
endange ed CH si es ac oss Eu ope. TRIQUETRA is coo di-
na ed by he Na ional Technical Uni e si y o A hens (NTUA)
and b ings oge he 21 pa ne s om G eece, Ge many, I aly,
Cyp us, Poland, Aus ia and Swi ze land. The conso ium in-
cludes 6 public en i ies, 4 SMEs, 7 uni e si y esea ch g oups
and 4 esea ch ins i u es, ensu ing a ich combina ion o scien-
i ic, echnological and cul u al expe ise.
The TRIQUETRA p ojec akes i s name om he concep
o a “ i ec a” app oach o CH isk managemen , e lec ing i s
ocus on h ee in e connec ed s eps: isk iden i ica ion, isk
quan i ica ion and isk mi iga ion (Fig. 1).

A key elemen o he p ojec is he de elopmen and es ing
o inno a i e echnologies, including a Flash LiDAR sys em
o 3D mapping o unde wa e he i age si es, a no el mid-in-
a ed spec oscopic senso o eal- ime in-si u wa e quali y
moni o ing, ad anced emo e sensing me hodologies and nano-
echnology-based p o ec i e coa ings. Mo eo e , TRIQUETRA

mobile applica ion, combining c owdsou ced moni o ing wi h
Augmen ed Reali y (AR) unc ionali ies.
The TRIQUETRA Decision Suppo Sys em (DSS) cons i-

based on si e-speci ic pa ame e s, combining li e a u e-based
solu ions wi h expe -d i en mi iga ion s a egies.
• The Knowledge Base Pla o m (KBP), which ac s as he
cen al da a eposi o y o he TRIQUETRA p ojec , in e-
g a ing a dual sys em: a bibliog aphic da abase, con aining
scien i ic e e ences and bes p ac ices, and a geospa ial
WebGIS in e ace ha isualizes si e-speci ic da a.
