Abs ac : Ipomoea bu iliae Belo (Con ol ulaceae) is
desc ibed and illus a ed as a new species. We p o ide a
axonomic ea men along wi h ana omical, cy ogene ic,
and palynological desc ip ions o his new species.
Addi ionally, we include illus a ions, pho og aphs,
and de ails abou i s geog aphical dis ibu ion and
conse a ion s a us. A compa a i e lis highligh s key
mo phological cha ac e s o I. bu iliae in ela ion o closely
ela ed species. I sha es some mo phological simila i ies
wi h I. pa asi ica (Kun h) G.Don. Howe e , I. bu iliae is
dis inguished by i s whi e co olla, spiny p ojec ions on
he s em, pe iole, and peduncle, as well as a campanula e
co olla and ec o ichomes along he ilamen s.

Ipomoea L. is he mos di e se genus o
Con ol ulaceae, comp ising app oxima ely 800
species (Wood e al., 2020; Delgado-Junio e al.,
2023). Despi e i s mo phological a iabili y, he
genus is easily ecognized by se e al key ai s:
echina e and pan opo a e pollen g ains, an en i e
s yle, a s igma usually wi h wo globose s igma ic
lobes, and 4- al ed capsules (Aus in & Ca alcan e,
1982; S e ano ić e al., 2002). The genus has abou
160 species in B azil, o which 65 a e endemic
(San os e al., 2021; Simão-Bianchini e al., 2024).

o hypoc a e i o m co olla (Aus in, 2004; Fe ei a
& Mio o, 2009; Delgado-Junio e al., 2023). The
shape, p opo ion, indumen um, and o namen a ion
o he sepals a e essen ial axonomic cha ac e s
o delimi a ion o species o he genus, especially
when compa ed wi h ege a i e cha ac e s (Wood
e al., 2020; Delgado-Junio e al., 2023).

In oduc ion
Con ol ulaceae comp ises abou 60 gene a and
1,900 species, wi h a cosmopoli an dis ibu ion
p edominan ly ound in opical egions (S aples
& B ummi , 2007; POWO, 2024). In B azil, he
amily is ep esen ed by 24 gene a and a ound
430 species (including one endemic genus and
app oxima ely 200 endemic species), dis ibu ed
ac oss all phy ogeog aphic domains (Simão-
Bianchini, 2024). In ecen yea s, he knowledge

addi ion o being used o desc ibe new species (e.g.,
Smi h & Smi h, 1942; Gomes e al., 2005; Almeida
e al., 2016; San os e al., 2019, 2020a, 2020b;
Nepomuceno e al., 2022; Belo e al., 2023a, 2023b,
2023c, 2024). In Con ol ulaceae, ana omical
cha ac e s such as he shape o he pe iole, mid ib,
and mesophyll a e in o ma i e o delimi ing
species o A gy eia Lou . (T aipe m e al., 2017),
Camonea Ra . (San os e al., 2024), Daus inia Bu il
& A.R. Simões (Alenca e al., 2024), E ol ulus L.
(Ke ja un e al., 2016; San os e al., 2020a), and
Jacquemon ia Choisy (Belo e al. 2023b, 2023c, 2024).
Du ing ield expedi ions in he No heas
egion o B azil, we encoun e ed an un amilia
mo pho ype o Ipomoea, which we s udied in
de ail. One popula ion o his mo pho ype was
iden i ied, and he e we desc ibe i as a new Ipomoea
species, suppo ed by mo phological, ana omical,
palynological, and cy ogene ic analyses.
Ma e ials and Me hods
S udy a ea
Field expedi ions we e ca ied ou in no heas e n
B azil, be ween May 2023 and July 2024. The
desc ip ion o he new species was based on
specimens collec ed om one popula ion in he
A eia municipali y, Pa aíba S a e, B azil (Fig.
1). This a ea is pa o he Bo bo ema Pla eau
(BP), one o he eco egions wi hin he Caa inga
phy ogeog aphic domain. The BP spans an a ea o
43,460 km², equi alen o 2.61% o No heas e n
B azil (Sil a e al., 2003). I ex ends ac oss he

ege a ion in he BP is hypoxe ophilous Caa inga
(Sil a e al., 2003).
Mo phology and conse a ion s a us
Specimens o mo phologically closely ela ed species
we e analyzed om he ollowing he ba ia: EAC,
EAN, HCES, IPA, PEUFR, and UFP (ac onyms
ollow Thie s, 2024). The axonomic desc ip ion
and e minology ollow Meisne (1869), Wood
e al. (2020), Ha is and Ha is (2001), and Ellis
e al. (2009). A p elimina y conse a ion s a us
assessmen was pe o med based on he IUCN Red
Lis Ca ego ies and C i e ia (IUCN, 2012, 2024).
The occu ence map was gene a ed using QGIS
so wa e 3.22 Białowieża (h ps://qgis.o g/).
Ana omical analyses o lea es
Fo compa a i e ana omical analyses, h ee lea es

i e specimens o he new species and o I. pa asi ica
(Kun h) G.Don in he ield (Table 1). These lea es
we e ixed in FAA 50 ( o maldehyde, ace ic acid,
and 50% e hanol) o 48 hou s (Johansen, 1940)
and subsequen ly s o ed in 70% e hanol. F eehand
sec ions we e made om he median egion o
he lea blade, pe iole, and s em. These sec ions
we e clea ed and s ained wi h sa anin-as a
blue (Buka sch, 1972). The slides we e p epa ed
ollowing he p o ocols o K aus and A duin (1997),
analyzed using a Leica DM500 pho omic oscope,
and deposi ed in he Labo a o y o In eg a i e
Sys ema ics a he Fede al Ru al Uni e si y o
Pe nambuco, in Reci e, B azil. Samples close o
he lea ma gins we e dehyd a ed and p epa ed o
scanning elec on mic oscopy (SEM) analysis using
a Hi achi SEM, model TM4000 Plus. SEM images
we e p ocessed using Co elDRAW® 2021 so wa e.

on Pun e al. (2007) and Halb i e e al. (2018).
Cy ogene ic analyses
Fo cy ogene ic analyses, 3 mm lowe buds we e
ixed in Ca noy’s solu ion (3:1 absolu e e hanol/
glacial ace ic acid, / ) o 2 hou s a oom
empe a u e. To p epa e he slides, he lowe
buds we e washed wice wi h dis illed wa e o
5 minu es each, and he an he s we e diges ed in
an enzyma ic solu ion con aining 2% cellulase and
20% pec inase and kep in a humid chambe a
37 °C o 20 minu es. Subsequen ly, he an he s
we e agmen ed on a slide in a d op o 45%
ace ic acid, co e ed wi h a co e slip, and c ushed.
The co e slip was hen emo ed a e eezing in
liquid ni ogen, and he slides we e ai -d ied and
s o ed o h ee days a oom empe a u e. The
slides we e s ained wi h 10 μL o Ch omomycin
A3 (CMA; 0.1 mg/mL) o 1 hou , ollowed by 10
μL o 4’,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI; 1 μg/
mL) o hal an hou , was pe o med as desc ibed
by Ba os e Sil a and Gue a (2010), and Ba os
e Sil a e al. (2010). A e washing wi h dis illed

Taxonomic no es: Ipomoea bu iliae esembles
se e al species ound in no heas e n B azil, such
as I. alba L. and I. ma cellia Meisn., which sha e
cha ac e is ics like a whi e co olla, p ominen
eins on he lea blade, and indumen um on he
s em, lea es, pe iole, and peduncle. Howe e ,
ep oduc i e cha ac e s play a signi ican ole
in dis inguishing hese axa, pa icula ly co olla
shape, he colo o he abaxial mesope al egion,
and sepal shape (see Table 2).
Ana omical no es: In he pa ade mic sec ion and
he on al iew, he epide mis o I. bu iliae
p esen s cells wi h s aigh an iclinal walls on
he adaxial su ace (Fig. 4a), and sinuous on he
abaxial su ace (Fig. 4b), wi h d uses es ic ed
o he adaxial su ace (Fig. 4a). The dis ibu ion
o s oma a is amphihypos oma ic, wi h pa acy ic
and anisocy ic s oma a and s oma al g ouping
(Fig. 4c). Tec o and glandula ichomes occu
on bo h epide mal su aces (Fig. 4a & b). In c oss-
sec ion, he epide mis is unise ia e (Fig. 4d), wi h
o al o ec angula cells and ex e nal pe iclinal
walls co e ed by a smoo h cu icle. The lea blade
has an asymme ic do si en al mesophyll (Fig.
4d), p esen ing bise ia e palisade pa enchyma and
spongy pa enchyma 1-3 s a um se ia e. Also in
he mesophyll, idioblas s con aining d uses (Fig.
4e), la ici e ous canals (Fig. 4 ), and p isma ic
c ys als in he palisade pa enchyma we e obse ed
(Fig. 4 ). The main mid ib, in c oss-sec ion,
exhibi s a bicon ex con ou (Fig. 4g), p ominen ly
wide on he abaxial su ace. The epide mis is
unise ia e, wi h ec o ichomes. Unde lying he
epide mis is he lacuna collenchyma (Fig. 4h).
Fu he in e nally, he undamen al pa enchyma

la ici e ous canals (Fig. 4h). The ascula sys em is
bicolla e al, consis ing o a single U-shaped cen al
bundle (Fig. 4g & i). The pe iole in c oss-sec ion

and sessile pel a e glandula ichomes. Adjacen

4k), ollowed by he undamen al pa enchyma
wi h la ici e ous canals. The ascula sys em is
bicolla e al, composed o i e bundles – h ee
cen al ones o ming an a ch and wo adaxial
accesso ies (Fig. 4j). D uses occu abundan ly in he
in e nal and ex e nal egions o he phloem (Fig.
4l). The lea ana omy o I. bu iliae was compa ed
wi h I. pa asi ica, which is mo phologically
simila . Bo h species exhibi dis inc ege a i e
mo phoana omical cha ac e s ha a e c ucial
o hei delimi a ion. These include di e ences
in he sinuosi y o he an iclinal walls on he
epide mal su ace o he lea blade, s oma al ypes,
he numbe o palisade pa enchyma laye s in he
mesophyll, he ype o collenchyma in he mid ib,
and he shape and numbe o ascula bundles in
he pe iole (Fig. 5, Table 3).
SEM images o he lea es e eal a di e se a ay o
su ace s uc u es. The images o he lea blade and
pe iole highligh he abundan p esence o ec o
ichomes (Fig. 4m & n), which appea as hin,
elonga ed p ojec ions. Sessile pel a e glandula
ichomes a e dis ibu ed ac oss he lea blade,
pe iole, and s em (Fig. 4o–q). Spiny p ojec ions
we e obse ed on he s em (Fig. 4 ), cha ac e ized
by a obus , poin ed s uc u e wi h a b oad base
ha ape s o a sha p ip. SEM images also show
he p esence o cu icula waxes on he adaxial
su ace o he lea blade, appea ing as g anules
(Fig. 4m) and memb anous pla ele s (Fig. 4 ).
Palynological no es: The pollen g ains o I. bu iliae
a e monads, apola and e y la ge (x
 = 110.8 × 109.6
μm), wi h a sphe oidal shape. They a e pan opo a e
con aining app oxima ely 90 ci cula po es (x
 =
7.1 μm), and lack an annulus. The exine is ec a e,
echina e, and pe o a e ea u ing bulbous spines
(x
 = 15 μm), numbe ing a ound 165. These spines

Discussion
Among he Ipomoea species wi h a whi e
co olla ound in he Bo bo ema Pla eau (BP) o
no heas e n B azil, I. bu iliae is dis inguished
by i s campanula e co olla ( s. hypoc a e i o m
in I. alba, unnel o m in I. ma cellia, ubula in
I. espe ilia F.D.San os, G.C.Delgado-Junio &
Bu il). In he ege a i e s age, he new species
may be con used wi h I. pa asi ica, since hey
sha e co da e lea es, spiny p ojec ions on
he s em, and occasionally on he pe iole and
peduncle. Howe e , a de ailed analysis o he
ype specimens and p o ologue o I. pa asi ica
shows ha he species di e mainly in he
lea apex, co olla colo , peduncle size, and he
sepals’ shape, apex, and indumen um. The
compa a i e ana omical analysis e ealed ha
he mo phological delimi a ion o hese species
is s ongly suppo ed mainly by he shape o he
epide mal cell walls o he adaxial su ace, ype
o collenchyma o he mid ib, ypes o s oma a,
shape o he pe iole, dis ibu ion, shape, and
numbe o ascula bundles (see Fig. 5, Table 3).

p o iding de ense agains pa hogens (Ahmad e
al., 2015). The p esence o hese speci ic waxes’
ypes in I. bu iliae highligh s he signi icance o
ana omical ea u es in delimi ing axonomic
g oups wi hin he Con ol ulaceae amily. This
inding p o ides a aluable ool o sys ema ic
s udies and he iden i ica ion o new species.
