Land use and anspo a ion sys ems play a i al ole in shaping he dynamics o u ban a eas, wi h
p o ound implica ions o sus ainabili y, mobili y, and quali y o li e. Resea che s and policymake s ha e
de eloped a ious Land Use T anspo a ion In e ac ion (LUTI) models o unde s and he in ica e
ela ionship be ween land use and anspo a ion. These models aim o cap u e he complex in e ac ions
be ween land-use pa e ns and anspo a ion sys ems, enabling mo e in o med planning and decision-
making p ocesses. This s udy p o ides a comp ehensi e e iew o he applicabili y o LUTI models,
highligh ing hei s eng hs, limi a ions, and po en ial o add essing con empo a y u ban challenges. This
e iew encompasses many LUTI models, including mic osimula ion, spa ial econome ic, and in eg a ed
land-use anspo models. I examined he unde lying heo e ical ounda ions, da a equi emen s,
calib a ion echniques, and compu a ional aspec s. This e iew iden i ies key ac o s in luencing he
applicabili y o LUTI models, such as da a a ailabili y, compu a ional capabili ies, and he speci ic u ban
con ex in which hey a e applied. I explo es he challenges aced in in eg a ing land-use and anspo a ion
da a, inco po a ing empo al dynamics, and cap u ing he impac s o policy in e en ions.

Sus ainabili y is a compelling opic in global ci ies, pa icula ly in he con ex o a ious
de elopmen concep s. U ban sus ainabili y is o pa icula conce n in u ban
de elopmen . I is widely acknowledged ha land use a angemen signi ican ly
in luences he sus ainabili y o ci ies (Tu uko e al., 2022). As he popula ion expanded,
he need o land inc eased, leading o he u ilisa ion o land esou ces known as "land
use." In India, he impo ance o land-use planning has inc eased owing o he sca ci y o
land (S. Sha ma e al., 2023). The o igin o Land Use T anspo a ion In e ac ion (LUTI)
models can be aced back o he mid-20 h cen u y, when u ban planning and
anspo a ion s udies began ecognising he in e dependen ela ionship be ween land use
pa e ns and anspo a ion sys ems (Lopane e al., 2023). The unde s anding ha land use
and anspo a ion decisions in luence each o he and join ly shape u ban de elopmen
led o he de elopmen o in eg a ed modelling app oaches and he p omo ion o
ansi ion-o ien ed de elopmen o sus ainable u ban g ow h (Shah ia i e al., 2023;

he LUTI models can be a ibu ed o he wo k o u ban economis s and anspo a ion
planne s. Schola s such as William Alonso, Da id Badoe, and E ic Mille ha e made
signi ican con ibu ions o he heo e ical unde s anding o land use and anspo a ion
in e ac ions (Badoe & Mille , 2000). Alonso's pionee ing wo k on he bid- en heo y in
he 1960s p o ided insigh s in o he ela ionship be ween land alue, accessibili y, and
anspo a ion in as uc u e (Gao e al., 2020). As u ban a eas expand and encoun e
g owing mobili y challenges, he need o quan i a i e models o cap u e he complex
in e play be ween land use and anspo a ion becomes inc easingly appa en (Le e al.,
2023). Wi h he ad en o compu e s and ad ancemen s in da a a ailabili y, esea che s
ha e s a ed de eloping o mal modelling amewo ks o simula e and analyse he
in e ac ions be ween land use and anspo a ion sys ems (Zhong e al., 2022).
LUTI models p o ide a comp ehensi e unde s anding o how changes in one domain
a ec he o he (Lopes e al., 2019). LUTI models we e designed o cap u e bo h he
spa ial and empo al dimensions o land-use and anspo a ion in e ac ions. They
simula ed he mo emen o people and goods ac oss u ban a eas, aking in o accoun
a el demand, mode choice, ou e selec ion, and a el imes. These models also accoun
o he eedback loops be ween land use and anspo a ion, whe ein changes in
anspo a ion in as uc u e and accessibili y in luence land use decisions, and ice e sa.
(Ahasan & Güne alp, 2022). Ad ances in compu ing echnology, da a a ailabili y, and
analy ical echniques ha e acili a ed he de elopmen o LUTI models. To calib a e and
alida e hei ou pu s, hese models inco po a e a ious da a sou ces, including land-use
su eys, anspo a ion ne wo k da a, demog aphic da a, and a el beha io su eys.
Addi ionally, spa ial analysis ools, econome ic modeling echniques, and simula ion
algo i hms ha e been employed o cap u e he complex dynamics o land use and
anspo a ion in e ac ions (Kii e al., 2019).
The applica ion o LUTI models has ex ended o a ious u ban planning and policy
domains. They e alua ed he impac s o anspo a ion in as uc u e in es men s, land-
use policy changes, and ansi -o ien ed de elopmen s a egies. LUTI models can assess
he e ec s o al e na i e scena ios on a el pa e ns, conges ion le els, ene gy
consump ion, ai quali y, and social equi y, hus enabling policymake s o make in o med
decisions (Amalan e al., 2023). LUTI models ha e e ol ed in ecen yea s o inco po a e
eme ging echnologies and concep s such as big da a analy ics, machine lea ning, and
sha ed mobili y se ices. These ad ancemen s enhance he accu acy and p edic i e
capabili ies o models, enabling a mo e obus unde s anding o he complex dynamics
be ween land use and anspo a ion. (Kii e al., 2019). This s udy aims o p o ide a
comp ehensi e e iew o he applicabili y, s eng hs, limi a ions, and u u e di ec ions o
LUTI models. I explo es he heo e ical ounda ions, da a equi emen s, modelling
echniques, and p ac ical implica ions o LUTI models o u ban planning and
policymaking. By unde s anding he complexi ies o land-use and anspo a ion
in e ac ions, policymake s and planne s can de elop mo e sus ainable, e icien , and
li able u ban en i onmen s.

and 2025, wi h 614 s udies, ocusing on ecen esea ch. O he ini ial sea ch esul s, 137
esea ch pape s we e deemed ele an based on he a ailabili y o open-access con en .
Among he app op ia e pape s, 71 we e iden i ied as ela ed o he domain o u ban
planning. Abs ac eading na owed he selec ion o 53 ele an pape s based on hei
abs ac s. Finally, a de ailed s udy was conduc ed on 46 pape s deemed highly ele an
based on hei con en and con ex .

The e ol ing landscape o Land Use and T anspo a ion In eg a ion (LUTI) models has

eme ging uses and applica ions. The analysis e ealed a no able inc ease in schola ly
con ibu ions o e he yea s, signi ying g owing in e es in ha nessing LUTI models o
di e se pu poses. In 2013, he e we e ou documen s and he e has been a consis en
upwa d end since. By 2018, he numbe o documen s doubled, and he momen um
con inued wi h no able peaks in 2021 and 2025, wi h 10 and eigh documen s,
espec i ely. This su ge in esea ch ou pu sugges s inc easing ecogni ion o he
