INTRODUCTION

he Caucasus (Oláh e al. 2020, Oláh & Vin-
çon 2024). Ou cu en sampling and s udy
ac i i ies a e mos ly es ic ed o Geo gia and a
small pa o he Lesse Caucasus (also known as
he Caucasus Mino o An icaucasus) and he
G ea e Caucasus moun ain anges. The wo
anges un pa allel o a ound 600 kilome es
h ough six coun ies: Russia, Tu key, Geo gia,
A menia, Aze baijan and I an. Only a e y small
numbe o limi ed habi a s we e sampled. To
compensa e he limi s o sample size we applied
he p inciple and p ac ices o “pu oge he ” p o-
cedu e in o de o ha e a li le mo e han no hing,
a eally e y small s udy ma e ial a ou disposal
o axonomic esea ch. Ne e heless, e en om
his small p i a e ial we ha e desc ibed many
new caddis ly species. This clea ly e lec s he
almos p is ine s a e o he en i e Caucasus, which
has been sampled spo adically and s udied by
only a ew expe s, such as he Russian And ei
Vasilie ich Ma yno , he Ge man Wol am Mey,
and he Tu kish Füsun Sipahile . The disco e y
and desc ip ion o 173 new caddis ly species om
such small, agmen ed samples highligh s he in-
adequacy o suppo o he ins i u ional scien i ic
ne wo k o axonomy – he na u al his o y muse-
ums, uni e si ies, and aqua ic and ecological
esea ch ins i u es – and demons a es how his
hinde s hei abili y o ca y ou i al biodi e si y
esea ch. Fu he mo e, i clea ly shows how li le
we know abou he s uc u e o li ing aqua ic
communi ies in such a as , moun ainous egion
wi h i s highly di e se and isola ed habi a s. Un-
o una ely his a he sad scena io o he con em-
po a y ins i u ional axonomic esea ch is no con-
ined o T ichop e a and o he Caucasus, bu i is
also e iden in o he g oups and h oughou
Eu ope (Páll-Ge gely e al. 2024).
MATERIAL AND METHODS
Ou p esen s udy is based on caddis ly spe-
cimens sampled by he second au ho Gilles Vin-
çon in Geo gia du ing his ea ly sp ing (20.IV–
4.V) and midsumme (2–18.VIII) collec ing ips
in he yea o 2024 co e ing he basic aqua ic
habi a s o all he basic egions mapped al eady
be o e (Oláh & Vinçon 2024). Halil Ib ahimi has
con ibu ed o he knowledge o Plec ocnemia
la issima new species complex by his specimens
collec ed in I an, Eas Aze baijan, and he Elbu z
Moun ains. Aleksi Memishishi and K is ina Dzui-
lash ili ealised some collec ing ips in unex-
plo ed habi a s o Geo gia, as well as iden i ied a
pa o a ma e ial om a big Malaise ap esea ch
p ojec o Illia S a e Uni e si y wi h aps in-
s alled in 18 loca ions up o he sp ing a ea on he
Kin ishi Ri e in he Adja a egion. Some spe-
cimens we e collec ed and p esen ed o Aleksi
Memishishi by he Finnish lepidop e ologis , Ja i
Junnilainen as byp oduc o his Lepidop e a col-
lec ions using ligh aps.

(holaga), an e ad u ning (khou mai), elonga ed
hal -ci cula (obola) and ounded iangula (si-
ma) head. These sub le di e gences in his sen-
si i e i illa o y o gan seem s able, bu could be
exposed o a ious de o ma ions du ing copula-
ion and p epa a ion.
Desc ip ion. Male (in alcohol). La ge cas a-
nean b own animal. Scle i es medium b own,

b own. Maxilla y palp o mula is I-II-IV-III-V.

species, Ce asma cai on was desc ibed by
Malicky (1986). Howe e , one yea la e Sipahile
& Malicky (1987: page 96, igu e 4a,b,c)
published new d awings unde he same name,
