Objec i e: The He nia ia glab a plan , ha es ed om he Fe gana Valley, is used o p oduce
p oduc s wi h inc eased yield and high quali y. This is achie ed by ex ac ing i e pene saponins
om he g ound op o he plan using ul a il a ion.
Ma e ials and Me hods: The He nia ia glab a plan , which was ha es ed om he Fe gana
Valley, was d ied a oom empe a u e wi hou exposu e o sunligh . Ul a il a ion was hen used o
ex ac i e pene saponins om he d ied ops o he He nia ia plan s. Va ious ac o s a ec ing his
p ocess we e s udied in o de o op imize he ex ac ion p ocess.
Resul s: Quan i a i e analysis o he chemical composi ion o He nia ia glab a e ealed he
p esence o i e pene saponins a a concen a ion o 16.5%, la onoids anging om 0.3% o 0.7%,
and phenolic acids anging om 0.3% o 1.0%. The plan also con ains i idoids a a concen a ion o
1.2%, as well as annins, polysaccha ides, and mine al sal s. Du ing he ex ac ion p ocess, plan aw
ma e ials elease la ge amoun s o p ima y and seconda y me aboli es. This can make i di icul o
pu i y i e penes. To add ess his, an ul apu e il a ion me hod was used. To do his, 1,000 g ams
o d ied He nia a glab a plan we e ex ac ed ou imes wi h hyd omodule using 70% e hanol a a
a io o 1:12. Then, an ul a il a ion echnique was applied o pu i y he p ima y me aboli es. The
p ocess in ol ed ex ac ing 1 kg o he d ied plan ou imes using he hyd omodula o wi h 70%
e hanol a he same a io. A e he ex ac ion, he esul ing ex ac was dilu ed and he amoun o
i e pene sapogenin was quan i ied using spec opho ome y. The ex ac con ained 1.35% o he
o al olume in 12 li e s. Op imal condi ions o he alcohol ex ac ul a il a ion p ocess we e hen
s udied.. Acco ding o he s udy, unde op imal condi ions, i e pene saponins in he ex ac we e
ound o pass h ough 95% o he il a e a a a e o 10 kDa. The a e o mo emen o hese i e penes
h ough he memb ane was 200 L/s, and he empe a u e was 60°C. The passage a e o i e penes
was 15 L/S, and he saponin con en in he ex ac ed sample was 2.8%. These esul s led o a wo-
old inc ease in he concen a ion o saponins a e pu i ica ion om subs ances wi h molecula
weigh s g ea e han 10kDa. Cu en ly, wo k is ongoing o pu i y saponins om o he me aboli es.
Conclusions: T i e pene saponins we e ound o be as high as 16.5% in he He nia ia glab a
plan , and he ul a il a ion me hod e ec i ely concen a ed hem. Unde op imal condi ions (10 kDa
