Cinnamon (Cinnamomum spp.) is an a oma ic spice widely ecognised o i s culina y,
nu i ional, and medicinal signi icance.
I con ains a wide ange o bioac i e compounds ha exhibi an ioxidan , an i-
in lamma o y, an imic obial, and an idiabe ic ac i i ies. This esea ch pape sys ema ically
e iews he an ioxidan p ope ies and he apeu ic po en ials o cinnamon, highligh ing i s
phy ochemical composi ion, mechanisms o an ioxidan ac ion, and clinical ele ance in
managing oxida i e s ess- ela ed diseases. Da a we e syn hesised om majo da abases
published be ween 2000 and 2024. Findings show ha cinnamon possesses s ong adical
sca enging capaci y, p omo es endogenous an ioxidan de ence, and shows he apeu ic
po en ial agains diabe es, ca dio ascula , neu odegene a i e, and in ec ious diseases.

1. INTRODUCTION
Cinnamon is ob ained om he inne ba k o ees belonging o
he genus Cinnamomum, p ima ily Cinnamomum e um
(Ceylon cinnamon) and Cinnamomum cassia (Chinese
cinnamon). I has been used o housands o yea s as bo h a
spice and a medicinal agen in adi ional healing sys ems such
as Ayu eda and T adi ional Chinese Medicine. Recen
scien i ic in es iga ions ha e p o ided e idence suppo ing
cinnamon’s pha macological po en ial, pa icula ly i s
an ioxidan ac i i y, which con ibu es o i s he apeu ic e ec s.

2. METHODOLOGY
This pape ollows a sys ema ic e iew me hodology based on
PRISMA (P e e ed Repo ing I ems o Sys ema ic Re iews
and Me a-Analyses) guidelines. The app oach includes de ining
he esea ch ques ion, es ablishing inclusion and exclusion
c i e ia, iden i ying in o ma ion sou ces, and syn hesising da a
o quali a i e in e p e a ion.
2.1 Eligibili y C i e ia

be ween 2000 and 2024 ha examined cinnamon’s an ioxidan
o he apeu ic e ec s. Exclusion c i e ia included mixed he bal
o mula ions con aining cinnamon and non-o iginal pape s, such
as edi o ials and commen a ies.

2.4 S udy Risk o Bias Assessmen
The Coch ane Risk o Bias Tool and SYRCLE Animal S udy
Risk o Bias ool we e used o assess s udy quali y. Fac o s

and epo ing bias. Mos s udies p esen ed a mode a e isk due
o limi ed sample sizes o uns anda dized ex ac ion me hods.
3. Phy ochemical Composi ion o Cinnamon
Cinnamon ba k con ains se e al bioac i e compounds, including
cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, cinnamic acid, couma in, ca echins,
epica echins, and p ocyanidins. These compounds con ibu e o
cinnamon’s dis inc i e a oma and medicinal ac i i y.
The essen ial oils o cinnamon, pa icula ly cinnamaldehyde, a e
p ima ily esponsible o i s an ioxidan and an imic obial
p ope ies.
4. An ioxidan Mechanisms o Cinnamon
The an ioxidan mechanisms o cinnamon ope a e h ough
se e al pa hways: (1) ee adical sca enging, (2) me al ion
chela ion, (3) inhibi ion o lipid pe oxida ion, and (4)
enhancemen o endogenous an ioxidan enzymes. Phenolic
compounds in cinnamon dona e elec ons o hyd ogen a oms o
neu alise eac i e oxygen species (ROS) such as supe oxide,
hyd oxyl, and pe oxyl adicals.
5. The apeu ic Applica ions o Cinnamon
5.1 An idiabe ic Ac i i y
Cinnamon imp o es insulin sensi i i y, enhances glucose
up ake, and egula es glycogen syn hesis.
Polyphenols mimic insulin ac ion, while cinnamaldehyde
s imula es glucose anspo e (GLUT4) exp ession in cells.
Clinical ials demons a e educed as ing blood glucose and
imp o ed HbA1c le els wi h cinnamon supplemen a ion.

Cinnamon educes oxida i e modi ica ion o LDL choles e ol,
p e en s lipid pe oxida ion, and p omo es asodila ion. I s an i-

Cinnamon’s an ioxidan s p o ec neu ons om oxida i e s ess,
inhibi au p o ein agg ega ion, and enhance memo y and
lea ning. S udies show imp o ed neu obeha io al ou comes in
Alzheime ’s and Pa kinson’s models.

Cinnamon ex ac induces apop osis in cance cells h ough
ac i a ion o caspase pa hways and inhibi ion o angiogenesis.

Cinnamon essen ial oils exhibi b oad-spec um an imic obial
ac i i y agains bac e ia and ungi, while hei phenolic
compounds supp ess in lamma o y cy okines and COX-2
enzyme exp ession.

Ceylon cinnamon (C. e um) is o en conside ed supe io due o

Cassia cinnamon (C. cassia) con ains highe concen a ions o
couma in, which can be hepa o oxic in excessi e doses.
Howe e , Cassia is mo e abundan in cinnamaldehyde, gi ing i
a s onge la ou and an imic obial e ec s.
7. DISCUSSION
The compiled e idence unde sco es cinnamon’s po en
an ioxidan and he apeu ic po en ial. I s abili y o modula e
oxida i e pa hways con ibu es o bene icial e ec s in ch onic
disease p e en ion. Howe e , dispa i ies in expe imen al design,
species, and dosage necessi a e ca e ul in e p e a ion o esul s.

9. CONCLUSION
Cinnamon demons a es signi ican an ioxidan capaci y, which
unde lies i s di e se he apeu ic applica ions.
Th ough ee adical sca enging, me al chela ion, and
enhancemen o endogenous de ences, cinnamon shows p omise
as a na u al agen o managing oxida i e s ess- ela ed
condi ions. Wi h u he esea ch and clinical alida ion,
cinnamon may se e as a sa e, e ec i e complemen a y he apy
in mode n medicine.
