ad oca ing o p ac ices ha p omo e ecological balance while os e ing economic g ow h.
Recen ly, esea che s in Compu e -Suppo ed Coope a i e Wo k (CSCW) and Human-
Compu e In e ac ion (HCI) s a ed o ocus on "de eloping egions", leading o an
inc easing in e es in unde s anding how ICTs can suppo quali y o li e and wo k p ac ices,
such as ag icul u e in de eloping coun ies (Chand a and Collis, 2021). These schola s
acknowledge he challenges aced by u al communi ies, including limi ed access o
elec ici y and wa e , while also highligh ing he inno a i e ICT solu ions ha a ise in
esponse, such as sola -powe ed mobile phone cha ging sys ems. I s udies ha e ocused
a he beginning mainly on u al challenges aced in de eloping coun ies, s udies a e
ecen ly add essing he challenges speci ic o de eloped u al a eas.
Ha dy e al. (2019), in hei wo k “Ru al HCI Resea ch: De ini ions, Dis inc ions, Me hods,
and Oppo uni ies”, p opose a esea ch agenda ocused on u al a eas ha di e om he
low-income, de eloping egions ypically s udied in Human-Compu e In e ac ion (HCI). The
au ho s emphasise he need o explo e u al a eas in de eloped and high-income coun ies,
which emain la gely unde s udied in HCI esea ch despi e ha ing access o echnology and
in as uc u e.
In hei scoping e iew, he au ho s i s iden i y key cha ac e is ics o u al a eas, including

ex ac ion. Digi al li e acy and compu e skills can a y signi ican ly, as can access o social
se ices and heal h ca e. Ru al popula ions a e gene ally smalle and less dense, wi h
demog aphics o en skewing olde . Social ne wo ks in u al a eas also di e om hose in
u ban en i onmen s, wi h mo e amily-based ela ionships compa ed o he iend-cen ed
ne wo ks commonly ound in ci ies. As a esul , ne wo k-media ed aid in u al a eas is mo e
likely o come om amily connec ions a he han iends.
In hei scoping e iew, Ha dy e al. (2019) also iden i y a numbe o ends and he ole o
ICT in u al a eas. They ound ha mos o he esea ch has been conduc ed in de eloping
o low-income coun ies, wi h s udies in high-income egions mainly ocusing on he US, UK,
and Aus alia. Many pape s did no explici ly de ine " u ali y", hough when de ini ions we e

signi ican emphasis has been placed on in as uc u e challenges, especially limi ed
in e ne connec i i y, which is a p ima y ac o in luencing echnology access and adop ion
in u al a eas. Consequen ly, many s udies explo e echnologies ha aim o b idge he u al-
