(Qian e al., 2023). As u baniza ion con inues i s elen less expansion, ci ies ind
hemsel es a he o e on o global challenges, g appling wi h issues anging om
escala ing g eenhouse gas emissions o he deple ion o na u al esou ces (C eu zig e
al., 2024).

people, and money in a way ha keeps ci ies s ong and heal hy o he long haul. G een

challenges and enhance u ban li abili y. Seoul's app oach o sus ainabili y is o en
cha ac e ized by la ge-scale u ban egene a ion p ojec s, such as he Cheonggyecheon
es o a ion, which aim o in eg a e g een spaces and imp o e en i onmen al quali y
wi hin he dense u ban ab ic (Iqbal e al., 2023; Kim & Yang, 2023).

including inno a i e concep s such as loa ing esidences and e dan oo ins alla ions
(Suja ha e al., 2025). Addi ionally, Ams e dam dis inguishes i sel h ough p og essi e
was e managemen me hodologies, achie ing subs an ial ecycling a es and
minimizing land ill usage h ough comp ehensi e public awa eness campaigns and
communi y in ol emen . Ams e dam’s Ci cula S a egy 2024 aims o educe he ci y’s
esou ce usage by 50% by 2030 and ansi ion o a ully ci cula economy by 2050
(F ian e al., 2023).
Case S udy: Seoul as a Sus ainable Ci y
Seoul has signi ican ly in es ed in g eening i s u ban en i onmen h ough a
combina ion o echnological in eg a ion and communi y- ocused p og ams. The ci y
ea u es a highly e icien me o sys em, enhanced by in elligen a ic managemen
echnologies and an expanding lee o elec ic buses (Robinson & Ji, 2022). The
Cheonggyecheon S eam es o a ion p ojec , which con e ed a majo highway in o a
ib an u ban g eenway, exempli ies Seoul's commi men o ecological e i aliza ion
and he p omo ion o public well-being (Choi & Kim, 2022).
Seoul's dedica ion o en i onmen al sus ainabili y is u he demons a ed h ough he
implemen a ion o sophis ica ed ai quali y moni o ing sys ems, eco- iendly building
p ac ices, and ex ensi e u ban a o es a ion p og ams. The ci y p omo es ene gy
e iciency h ough sma buildings, sola panel subsidies, and dynamic ene gy
moni o ing (Liu & Wan, 2025). The “One Less Nuclea Powe Plan ” ini ia i e e lec s
Seoul’s long- e m ision o ene gy independence and ne -ze o emissions by 2050.
Blockchain echnology is used o anspa en acking o ene gy consump ion and
emissions. To ealize hese a - eaching ambi ions, Seoul has enac ed s ingen building
codes manda ing ene gy-e icien designs, incen i ized he ins alla ion o pho o ol aic
sys ems h ough subsidy p og ams, and deployed ad anced ene gy moni o ing
in as uc u e o op imize ene gy consump ion ac oss i s building s ock
