Digi al lea ning has become an in eg al pa o enginee ing educa ion. Dis up i e
e en s, including he COVID-19 pandemic and he mass adop ion o gene a i e AI,
ha e accele a ed he need o unde s and and e ec i ely u ilise digi al ools.
Enginee ing educa o s now ace he dual challenge o p epa ing s uden s o hese
echnologies and adap ing cu icula o a digi ally-o ien ed u u e. This wo kshop
aims o acili a e ne wo king and he sha ing o bes p ac ices among educa o s who
ei he ha e expe ise o seek o de elop hei p o iciency in digi al educa ion. The
session will include sho demons a ions o p ac ical digi al lea ning applica ions by
leading educa o s and an in e ac i e "wo ld ca é" session. This will enable
pa icipan s o collabo a i ely iden i y oppo uni ies and add ess conce ns ela ed o
digi al lea ning, speci ically ocusing on educa o e ec i eness, cu iculum impac ,
and p omo ing equi y and inclusion.

1 BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE
Use o digi al ools has been in eg al o he deli e y o highe educa ion o decades.
One o he i s eco ded uses o i ual lea ning en i onmen s was by he UK
dis ance lea ning ins i u ion, “The Open Uni e si y” (Weinb en, D., 2018). D i en by
he a ailabili y o cheap pe sonal compu e s and inc easingly capable in e ne
connec ions, he adop ion o i ual lea ning en i onmen s g ew du ing he 1990s
and became mains eam by he ea ly 2000s. Digi al lea ning p omised ha
echnology would enhance s uden lea ning, imp o e ins uc ion quali y, and
inc ease educa o e ec i eness (Na ional Educa ion Associa ion, 2013). In addi ion,
digi al lea ning ools ha e he po en ial o p omo e equi y and inclusion. The
UNESCO Qingdao Decla a ion p o ides policy ecommenda ions o le e aging
in o ma ion and communica ion echnologies (ICT) o add ess educa ional
challenges and ensu e equi able quali y educa ion and li elong lea ning oppo uni ies
o all.
In la e 2020, he Eu opean Commission (Eu opean Commission, 2020) se an
ambi ious ac ion plan o os e a high-pe o ming digi al educa ion ecosys em,
enhance digi al skills and compe encies o he digi al ans o ma ion, and suppo
he es ablishmen o a digi al educa ion hub.
The COVID-19 pandemic c ea ed a s ep change in he use o digi al lea ning ools,
shi ing om an enhancemen o adi ional eaching me hods o a necessa y
equi emen o main ain educa ional deli e y. Wi h enewed in e na ional in e es in
digi al lea ning, publica ion in he ield d ama ically inc eased, including guidance
documen s (Na ional Fo um o he Enhancemen o Teaching and Lea ning in
Highe Educa ion, 2021), e iews (Gibbs, B., & Wood, G. C. (Eds.), 2020), and policy
documen s (O ganisa ion o Economic Co-ope a ion and De elopmen , 2022).

o de s o magni ude in he coming yea s (Aschenb enne , 2024). In he e en o
achie ing AGI o supe in elligence, access o a digi al educa o as capable as a
human—albei a simulac um o one—will be inexpensi e, cus omised o each
lea ne , and always a ailable.

3 WORKSHOP DESIGN
3.1 Time plan
The ime plan o he sessions is desc ibed in Table 1. The pas , p esen , and u u e
o digi al educa ion will be p o ided as backg ound and in oduc ion. This will be
ollowed by wo ac i i ies. The i s is a se ies o e y sho (1–2 minu es, depending
on he numbe o p esen e s) “show and ell” pi ches om a endees o demons a e
hei applica ions o digi al lea ning. These will be ocused and speci ically amed
a ound he success o he digi al lea ning ool in add essing a p oblem encoun e ed
by he p esen e . P esen e s will be app oached and con i med in ad ance o he
wo kshop.
The second is a "wo ld ca é" me hod o ne wo king and in e ac ion. The session will
close wi h a ound able ga he ing o a endees' ideas o SIG ac ion planning, based
on he wo ld ca é able discussions.

4 WORKSHOP RESULTS
