Backg ound
The genus Me apocy us Helle , 1912, is he mos speciose and axonomically complex
genus in he ibe Pachy hynchini. Cu en ly, he genus is comp ised o mo e han 250
species ha a e classi ied in o se en subgene a. One o he leas s udied subgene a
unde he genus Me apocy us is he subgenus Dolichocephalocy us Schul ze, 1925,
whose membe s a e gene ally known o hei long and slende os um (0.60 o 0.76
imes as long as wide). Ano he dis inc ea u e o his subgenus is he e iden sexual
dimo phism: males possess ely a wi h a ounded apex and a s eep apical decli i y, while
emales exhibi a sha ply poin ed, iangula p ojec ion a he ely al apex. Like mos
wee ils unde he genus Me apocy us, species unde he subgenus
Dolichocephalocy us ha e a na ow geog aphic ange due o hei ligh inabili y; his is
p obably he eason why all known species unde his subgenus a e endemic o he
Philippines.

subgenus Dolichocephalocy us Schul ze, 1925, om he Aliwagwag P o ec ed
Landscape (APL), Ca eel, Da ao O ien al, Mindanao, Philippines, is desc ibed and
illus a ed. Named a e he Aliwagwag Falls, he no el species, Me apocy us
(Dolichocephalocy us) aliwagwag Pajo a & Cab as, sp. no ., is he i s species o he
genus o be o mally desc ibed om Ca eel, Da ao O ien al. The desc ip ion o his no el
species adds o he ich di e si y o he genus Me apocy us in he coun y and highligh s
he ecological signi icance o he Eas e n Mindanao Biodi e si y Co ido (EMBC).

Me apocy us Helle , 1912 (Helle 1912) (Coleop e a, Cu culionidae) is a genus o jewel
wee il belonging o he sub amily En iminae Schönhe , 1823 (Schönhe 1823), o he
ibe Pachy hynchini Schönhe , 1826 (Schönhe 1826). The membe s o his genus,
simila o he o he membe s o he ibe Pachy hynchini, a e gene ally ligh less due o
he absence o hei memb anous and me a ho acic wings. They also inhabi a e y
na ow and speci ic geog aphic ange due o hei inabili y o ly (Cab as e al. 2021a).
The genus has i s cen e o dis ibu ion in he Philippines, esul ing in he majo i y o he

species being endemic o he coun y. No ably, a ew species o his genus ha e also
been disco e ed in Japan and O chid Island, Taiwan (Cab as e al. 2022), making i a
non-coun y-speci ic g oup. Addi ionally, he combined ana omical cha ac e is ics o he

Helle , 1912; and T achycy us Helle , 1912 (Helle 1912, Schul ze 1925, Yap and Gapud
2007, Cab as e al. 2022b).

axonomic inac i i y as no new species we e eco ded since he desc ip ion o M. (D.)
duyagi Schul ze, 1934 ( Schul ze 1934). In 2020, he subgenus egained axonomic
momen um wi h he disco e y o M. (D.) zamboanganus Cab as, Madjos & Medina, 2020,
ollowed by i e subsequen species: M. (D.) baulo um Cab as, Pajo a & Medina, 2022;
M.(D.) malindangensis Cab as, Pajo a & Medina, 2022; M. (D.) ku ongbusaw Pajo a,
Medina & Cab as, 2022; M. (D.) chlo oglosus Rukmane–Bā bale, 2024; and M. (D.)
ag yoglosus Rukmane–Bā bale, 2024 (Cab as e al. 2020, Cab as e al. 2022a, Pajo a e
al. 2022, Rukmane-Bā bale 2024). Rema kably, ou o hese ecen ly desc ibed species

Mindanao is one o he p incipal islands and he second-la ges island in he Philippines,
wi h a land a ea o 94,630 km . I is loca ed in he sou he n pa o he coun y and is
home o a wide a ay o unique lo al and aunal species occupying a ious habi a ypes
(Pepi o e al. 2020). The lo al and aunal geog aphic and dis ibu ional ange
ca ego ises he island in o i e sub- egions: No heas Mindanao (Ca aga Region),
Cen al Mindanao, Wes e n Mindanao (Zamboanga Peninsula), Sou he n Mindanao and
Eas e n Mindanao (Diesmos and B own 2011). Se e al a eas wi hin hese sub- egions
emain en omologically unde explo ed, e en amongs p o ec ed landscapes like he
Aliwagwag P o ec ed Landscape (APL), loca ed in he P o inces o Da ao O ien al and
Da ao de O o. The APL was decla ed a P o ec ed A ea by P oclama ion No. 139 in 2011
and is pa o he Philippines’ Na ional In eg a ed P o ec ed A ea Sys em (NIPAS) and he
Expanded Na ional In eg a ed P o ec ed A ea Sys em (E-NIPAS). This p o ec ed
landscape blanke s he uppe Ca eel Ri e Basin o M . Ag uuganon and M . Pasian — a
moun ain complex lis ed as a Key Biodi e si y A ea (KBA) wi hin he EMBC (Philippine
Eagle Founda ion e al. 2008). As a c i ical ecological sanc ua y, he APL is open o local
and o eign isi o s (Mayuga 2021), o e ing ac i i ies such as swimming and ekking,
which makes i highly suscep ible o dis u bance om an h opogenic ac i i ies.

Ma e ials and me hods
P io o he ield expedi ion, a Wildli e G a ui ous Pe mi (No. XI-2023-31) was secu ed
om he Depa men o En i onmen and Na u al Resou ces (DENR) Region XI, and
pe mission o conduc he s udy was g an ed by he Aliwagwag P o ec ed Landscape
P o ec ed A ea Managemen Boa d h ough Resolu ion No. 2, se ies o 2023. The
specimens, cu en ly deposi ed a he Uni e si y o Mindanao Coleop e a Resea ch
Cen e (UMCRC), we e collec ed oppo unis ically h ough bush bea ing and
handpicking. The collec ed specimens we e hen s o ed in ials illed wi h 95% e hanol.
The specimens we e subsequen ly sp ead, ai -d ied o a ew days and moun ed on
moun ing ca ds wi h labels. Ana omical cha ac e s we e obse ed unde a Nikon
SMZ745T s e eomic oscope. The ea men o he geni als ollowed he p o ocol o
Yoshi ake (2011). Images o he habi us and geni alia we e aken using a Canon EOS
R10 digi al came a, equipped wi h an MP-E 65-mm mac o lens. All images we e s acked
using a Helicon Remo e (Ve . 4.4.4 W), p ocessed using a licensed e sion o Helicon
Focus 6.7.0 and cleaned using Pho oshop CS6 Po able so wa e.

Geospa ial Analysis and Mapping
In his s udy, we isualised and analysed dis ibu ional da a o he new species and
quan i ied he ege a ion co e classes o Aliwagwag P o ec ed Landscape o
complemen he in o ma ion abou he ecological s a us o he collec ion si e. Fo he
dis ibu ion map, he coo dina es we e ga he ed using he Ga min GPS Map 64x se ies,
wi h a posi ional accu acy o ≤ 5 me es. In addi ion, ege a ion co e was analysed using
he No malised Di e ence Vege a ion Index (NDVI), which u ilises sa elli e image y wi h
embedded spec al signa u e da a. NDVI is a aluable index o assessing ege a ion
co e and i s implica ions on he ecological s a us o he a ea. Typically, NDVI alues
ange om -1 o +1, while, in he local s udy a ea, hey a y be ween -0.15 and 0.53
(Khos a i e al. 2016). In his s udy, he sa elli e image y was ex ac ed om USGS.go ,
p o ided by he Landsa 8 sa elli e wi h a Le el 2 su ace e lec ance p oduc . The
downloaded da a had al eady been a mosphe ically co ec ed o p o ide su ace
e lec ance alues. The sa elli e image was cap u ed on 31 Ma ch 2020 and p ocessed
on 22 Augus 2020, using Collec ion 2, Tie 1 s anda ds. This ensu es ha he da a a e o
he highes quali y and mee geome ic and adiome ic accu acy s anda ds. To c ea e he
NDVI map, he ollowing equa ion was used: NDVI = (NIR – VIS) / (NIR + VIS), whe e VIS
