3.2 E ec s o Ozone (O₃) Exposu e on Lung Func ion and Exe cise Tole ance:
Ozone, a seconda y pollu an o med h ough pho ochemical eac ions, has been linked o a educ ion
in pulmona y unc ion and exe cise capaci y. Rundell (2012) obse ed ha e en mode a e ozone exposu e
causes b onchocons ic ion and ai way in lamma ion, leading o educed o ced expi a o y olume (FEV1) and
limi ed oxygen up ake. In endu ance spo s, such changes can signi ican ly educe ime- o-exhaus ion and VO₂
max sco es.
3.3 Role o Ni ogen Oxides (NOx) and Sul u Dioxide (SO₂):
Ni ogen oxides and sul u dioxide a e known o i i a e he mucosal lining o he ai ways, p o oking
symp oms such as coughing, wheezing, and dec eased pulmona y compliance. These pollu an s ac
syne gis ically o impai oxygen anspo and ae obic me abolism, which in u n educes maximal oxygen
up ake. Such educ ions di ec ly a ec long-dis ance unning, cycling, swimming, and o he ae obic e en s,
whe e oxygen deli e y is c ucial.
3.4 Oxida i e S ess and In lamma ion Induced by Chemical Pollu an s:
One o he mos damaging e ec s o ai pollu ion is he gene a ion o oxida i e s ess. Chemical
pollu an s such as PM2.5, ozone, and ola ile o ganic compounds induce eac i e oxygen species (ROS),
esul ing in lipid pe oxida ion, p o ein oxida ion, and DNA damage. Ma ke s such as malondialdehyde (MDA)
and educ ions in an ioxidan enzyme ac i i ies (such as supe oxide dismu ase [SOD] and glu a hione
pe oxidase [GPx]) ha e been consis en ly obse ed in a hle es aining in pollu ed en i onmen s. This
biochemical dis up ion hampe s muscle eco e y, issue epai , and adap a ion o aining loads.
3.5 Long- e m Exposu e and I s E ec s on VO₂ Max and Reco e y:
P olonged exposu e o pollu ed ai esul s in ch onic in lamma ion, emodeling o lung issue, and

4. Me hodology:
The p esen s udy adop ed a mul idisciplina y app oach, in eg a ing en i onmen al chemis y da a wi h
spo s physiology assessmen s o examine he in luence o ai quali y on a hle ic endu ance and eco e y.
4.1 S udy Design:
A c oss-sec ional analy ical esea ch design was used o compa e a hle es aining in egions wi h
a ying le els o ai quali y. This design enabled he simul aneous collec ion o ai pollu an exposu e da a and
physiological pe o mance indica o s ac oss di e en en i onmen al se ings. The s udy in ol ed wo main
componen s:
En i onmen al Chemis y Analysis: Con inuous measu emen and quan i ica ion o key a mosphe ic
pollu an s we e ca ied ou using po able ai quali y moni o ing ins umen s. Pa ame e s included
pa icula e ma e (PM2.5 and PM10), ni ogen oxides (NOx), sul u dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3).
Daily ai quali y indices (AQI) o each aining loca ion we e de i ed om hese eadings and e i ied
using publicly a ailable me eo ological and en i onmen al da a.
Field Tes ing o A hle es: Physiological assessmen s o a hle es we e conduc ed unde na u ally
occu ing ai quali y condi ions. Tes ing included measu es o ae obic capaci y, endu ance, and pos -
exe cise eco e y ma ke s. The design allowed o eal-wo ld ecological alidi y, ensu ing ha
indings e lec ac ual aining en i onmen s.
This mixed-me hods app oach acili a ed a comp ehensi e unde s anding o he di ec physiological
e ec s o ai pollu ion exposu e on endu ance capaci y and eco e y p ocesses.
4.2 Pa icipan s:
The s udy ec ui ed 120 compe i i e a hle es (age ange 18-28 yea s) om di e se spo s backg ounds
including a hle ics, cycling, oo ball, and c icke . All pa icipan s had a minimum o h ee yea s o s uc u ed
aining expe ience and we e ee om ch onic illnesses o espi a o y diso de s. W i en in o med consen was
ob ained om each pa icipan p io o inclusion in he s udy, and e hical app o al was secu ed om he
Ins i u ional Re iew Boa d o Hindu College Am i sa .
Pa icipan s we e ca ego ized in o h ee g oups based on hei p ima y aining en i onmen :
G oup A (High Pollu ion): A hle es esiding and aining in u ban-indus ial en i onmen s wi h AQI
consis en ly abo e 150, indica ing poo o e y poo ai quali y.

be ween 50 and 100, classi ied as mode a e.
G oup C (Low Pollu ion): A hle es aining in u al o na u al se ings wi h AQI less han 50, classi ied

4.3 Measu es:
A mul i-dimensional assessmen amewo k was used o e alua e endu ance pe o mance, pos -
exe cise eco e y ma ke s, and en i onmen al exposu e pa ame e s.
4.3.1 Endu ance Pe o mance:
Maximal Oxygen Up ake (VO₂ max): VO₂ max was assessed using he B uce T eadmill P o ocol,
which in ol es a g aded inc emen al exe cise es o oli ional exhaus ion. Respi a o y gases we e
analyzed using a calib a ed me abolic ca o de e mine maximal oxygen consump ion (mL/kg/min), a
key indica o o ae obic i ness and endu ance capaci y.
4.3.2 Reco e y Indica o s:
To assess muscle damage and pos -exe cise eco e y, he ollowing biochemical and physiological
ma ke s we e measu ed:
C ea ine Kinase (CK): Blood samples we e collec ed immedia ely a e exe cise and 24 hou s pos -
exe cise o de e mine CK ac i i y, e lec ing muscle ibe damage.
Lac a e Dehyd ogenase (LDH): LDH le els we e assessed as an indica o o muscle issue b eakdown
and me abolic s ess.
Hea Ra e Reco e y (HRR): Hea a e was eco ded con inuously du ing and a e he eadmill es .
HRR was calcula ed as he educ ion in hea a e du ing he i s wo minu es o eco e y, an
es ablished index o ca dio ascula eco e y and au onomic unc ion.

Da a will be analyzed using SPSS e sion 28. Desc ip i e s a is ics (mean ± SD) will be compu ed o
all a iables. Di e ences be ween g oups will be assessed using one-way ANOVA ollowed by pos -hoc Tukey
es s o pai wise compa isons. Pea son co ela ion coe icien s will be calcula ed o explo e ela ionships
be ween pollu an le els, VO₂ max, and eco e y indica o s. A signi icance le el o p < 0.05 will be adop ed o
all analyses.
5. Resul s:
5.1 Ai Quali y Le els:
En i onmen al moni o ing e ealed clea di e ences in ai quali y be ween he u ban, mode a e, and
u al aining en i onmen s.
U ban aining en i onmen s consis en ly demons a ed poo ai quali y, wi h mean PM2.5
concen a ions o 85 ± 12 µg/m³ and ozone (O₃) le els o 70 ppb. These alues a e conside ably abo e
he WHO guidelines o sa e ai quali y, indica ing a high pollu an load du ing a hle ic aining and
es ing.
Ru al aining en i onmen s main ained signi ican ly cleane ai , wi h PM2.5 concen a ions o 22 ± 5
µg/m³ and O₃ le els o 18 ppb.
Mode a e AQI en i onmen s ell be ween hese ex emes, wi h PM2.5 alues a ound 45 ± 8 µg/m³ .

= -0.71, p < 0.01, indica ing ha highe ai pollu an concen a ions a e associa ed wi h signi ican ly
lowe ae obic capaci y.
Fu he mo e, ele a ed CK and LDH alues we e posi i ely co ela ed wi h AQI ( = 0.63 and = 0.59,
espec i ely; p < 0.01), sugges ing ha highe le els o ai pollu ion exace ba e muscle damage and slow
eco e y.
6. Discussion:
The indings o his s udy clea ly demons a e ha exposu e o poo ai quali y has a p o ound nega i e
impac on ae obic capaci y (VO₂ max) and pos -exe cise eco e y in compe i i e a hle es. A hle es who ained
in high-pollu ion en i onmen s exhibi ed signi ican ly educed VO₂ max alues and ma kedly ele a ed pos -
exe cise CK and LDH le els compa ed o hei coun e pa s om mode a e and low AQI se ings. These esul s
highligh ha ai pollu ion ac s as bo h an acu e s esso and a ch onic impedimen o op imal a hle ic
pe o mance.
6.1 Mechanis ic Pa hways Linking Ai Quali y and Endu ance Impai men :
The educ ion in ae obic capaci y among a hle es exposed o pollu ed ai is explained by se e al
in e ela ed physiological and biochemical mechanisms:
