complex and p ac ical ields such as iqh (Islamic ju isp udence). As he Hana i
school o iqh in T ansoxiana expe ienced i s "golden age" in he 11 h cen u y, a
igu e who s ood a he cen e o his ise and was dis inguished by his posi ion in
he schola ly chain (silsila) was Shams al-a'imma Abd al-Aziz al-Halwani. To

Acco ding o 'Abd al-Hayy al-Laknawi's wo k Al-Fawa'id al-Bahiyya, al-
Halwani's chain o eache s (silsila) in he science o iqh goes back o Imam Abu
Hani a. In he schola ly de elopmen o Shams al-A'imma al-Halwani, his di ec
eache , Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Khid al-Nasa i (956-1033), a amous qadi (judge)
o his ime and a leading ju is ( aqih) o he Bukha a Hana i school, holds a special
place. Al-Nasa i se ed as a qadi in Bukha a and was also a schola o encyclopedic
knowledge who a eled o cen e s o lea ning such as Baghdad, Ku a, and Mecca,
ecei ing educa ion om he g ea es schola s o his ime.
Al-Nasa i, in u n, acqui ed his knowledge om mas e s such as Abu Bak
Muhammad ibn al-Fadl and 'Abdullah al-Subadhmuni, who we e s uden s o he
disciples o Abu Ha s al-Kabi , he ounde o he Bukha a school o iqh. This
unb oken schola ly chain (sanad) clea ly con i ms ha al-Halwani ecei ed he
eachings o Hana i iqh om pu e and eliable sou ces, almos di ec ly om i s
ounde s. In he Islamic schola ly adi ion, ecei ing knowledge h ough such an
unin e up ed chain gua an eed i s ansmission in i s o iginal, unal e ed o m and

au ho i y. I was p ecisely his solid ounda ion ha la e enabled al-Halwani himsel
o become a g ea mas e , o educa e geniuses like al-Sa akhsi and al-Bazdawi, and

Al-Halwani's schola ly compe ence and his high s a us as a ju is ( aqīh) a e
de ined no only by his expe ise in he science o ju isp udence ( iqh) bu also by

F om his pe spec i e, he ac ha al-Halwani s udied hadi h unde se e al
eminen schola s (muḥaddi hūn) demons a es he solidi y o his academic
ounda ion. Sou ces eco d ha he na a ed hadi hs om schola s such as Abū Bak
Muḥammad bin ‘Uma bin Hamadān, Abū Shu‘ayb Ṣāliḥ bin Muḥammad, and he
enowned his o ian and hadi h schola o his ime, Muḥammad bin Aḥmad Ghunjā
al-Ḥā iẓ.

na a ed om Imam al-Ṭaḥāwī.
This e idence indica es ha al-Halwani possessed comp ehensi e knowledge
no only in iqh bu also in he complex ields o hadi h s udies, such as he
knowledge o na a o s and de e mining he au hen ici y o hadi hs. This was a
c i ical ac o ha ende ed his legal opinions ( a wās) and ju isp uden ial
conclusions all he mo e well- ounded and eliable.
The ac ha Shams al-A'imma al-Halwani was a p eeminen schola o his
e a is p o en e en mo e i idly no jus by his own ank in he ield o iqh, bu by
he schola ly s a us o he dis inguished s uden s he augh . He se ed as a men o o

Shams al-A'imma al-Sa akhsi (d. 1093/94 CE): Conside ed al-Halwani's mos

o he Imams), which se es as a b illian example o schola ly succession wi hin
he T ansoxiana school o iqh.
The g ea es p oo o his schola ly cou age and memo y is his enowned 30-
olume wo k, Ki ab al-Mabsu . Acco ding o his o ical sou ces, al-Sa akhsi was
imp isoned in Uzgen due o a disag eemen wi h a Qa akhanid ule . Fo o e i een
yea s, he dic a ed his encyclopedic wo k o his s uden s om memo y alone,
wi hou access o any w i en sou ces. This wo k is conside ed one o he mos
comple e and comp ehensi e encyclopedias o he Hana i madhhab. In w i ing i , al-
Sa akhsi used his eache al-Halwani's wo k o he same name as he main heo e ical
ounda ion and sou ce, which he hen expanded upon and b ough o a s a e o
pe ec ion.
Al-Sa akhsi con ibu ed immensely no only o he p ac ical issues o iqh bu
also o he heo y o ju isp udence wi h his wo k on Usul al- iqh. His ich schola ly
legacy became one o he p ima y sou ces o he nex gene a ion o Hana i ju is s,
including g ea schola s like Bu han al-Din al-Ma ghinani, he au ho o al-Hidaya,
and sp ead he ame o he T ansoxiana school o iqh h oughou he Islamic wo ld.
The p o ound s eng h o al-Halwani's schola ly legacy and eachings can be
clea ly seen in he example o he g ea dynas y o schola s who eme ged om
among his s uden s – he al-Bazdawi amily. O iginally om he illage o Pazda
(o Bazda) nea Nasa , hese wo b o he s de eloped he knowledge hey ecei ed
om hei eache and le an indelible ma k on wo majo ields o he Hana i
school: he p inciples o ju isp udence and heology (kalam).
Fakh al-Islam Abu'l-Us al-Bazdawi (d. 482/1089): The elde b o he , Abu'l-
Us al-Bazdawi, who was hono ed wi h he i le "The P ide o Islam" (Fakh al-
Islam), is conside ed one o he g ea es ep esen a i es o he heo e ical
ounda ions o he Hana i school, namely he science o usul al- iqh. His wo k, Kanz
al-wusul ila ma' i a al-usul ("The T easu e o A ainmen o he Knowledge o

Sad al-Islam Abu'l-Yus al-Bazdawi (d. 493/1100): The younge b o he ,
Abu'l-Yus al-Bazdawi, who ecei ed he i le "The Pilla o Islam" (Sad al-Islam),
gained ame p ima ily o his ac i i ies in he science o kalam ( heology). He played
a cen al ole in T ansoxiana in he s uggle agains he Ash'a i and Mu' azili
doc ines, and in de ending and sys ema izing he Ma u idi c eed, which was
adi ional o he egion. His wo k Usul al-Din ("The Founda ions o Religion") is
conside ed one o he mos comple e and sys ema ic undamen al sou ces ha
explains he eachings o Imam Ma u idi. A he same ime, he was also an
accomplished schola in he ield o iqh and issued nume ous a was on he p essing
legal issues o his ime.
The membe s o he Bazdawi amily we e g ea igu es who, based on he
eachings o al-Halwani, es ablished hei own schools in Hana i ju isp udence ( iqh)
and Ma u idi heology (kalam), ensu ing he dominance o hese wo ields in
T ansoxiana o cen u ies. Thei wo k is a clea es amen ha Shams al-A'imma al-
Halwani was no me ely a g ea eache (muda is), bu a mas e who laid he
ounda ion o en i e schola ly dynas ies.
Shams al-A'imma al-Za anja i (1037–1112 CE). Bak ibn Muhammad al-
Za anja i, conside ed one o he las and mos dis inguished s uden s o al-Halwani,
was a alen ed schola and a p ominen imam o he Hana i madhhab. Due o his
excep ional memo y, deep knowledge, and abili y o answe any ques ion wi hou
consul ing a sou ce, he was e e ed by he people o his ci y as " he mino Abu
Hani a." As one o he las na a o s o ansmi om his eache al-Halwani, he
holds an impo an place in passing down his mas e 's schola ly legacy o he nex
gene a ion.
In his ime, al-Za anja i was one o he main ju is s ( aqīh) o whom people
u ned o legal opinions ( a was). He was well- e sed no only in iqh bu also in

such as Balkh, Sa akhs, Sama kand, and Bukha a, s udying unde many hadi h
schola s (muhaddi hūn). Al-Za anja i li ed a long li e and passed away in Bukha a
in he yea 512 AH (1112 CE), whe e he was bu ied in he Kalabad ceme e y. His
ca ee is a p ime example o he in luence and con inui y o al-Halwani's schola ly
school.
The ci cle o al-Halwani's s uden s was no limi ed o he mos amous names
like al-Sa akhsi o he Bazdawis. The g ea his o ian Imam al-Dhahabi, in his
wo k 'Siya A'lam al-Nubala', no es ha se e al o he schola s, including al-Hasan
ibn Mansu al-Nasa i, Abu Bak Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Nasa i, and 'Abd al-
Ka im al-Anduqi, also s udied di ec ly unde al-Halwani. This in o ma ion e eals

Thus, al-Halwani's in luence was ealized h ough bo h he mos eminen
ju is s and local schola s in a ious egions, allowing his school o become deeply
oo ed h oughou T ansoxiana. The ac ha h ee o his s uden s—al-Sa akhsi, al-
Za anja i, and Abu'l-Yus al-Bazdawi (along wi h his i le 'Sad al-Islam')—all

o he Bukha a school o iqh and, in u n, ensu ed ha his schola ly he i age was

Sa akhsi, he Bazdawis, and al-Za anja i. He was no me ely a eache (muda is),
bu se ed as a "golden link" connec ing he gene a ions o g ea schola s be o e and
