Abs ac
The genus Plo ina Lewis, 1896 (Coleop e a, Coccinellidae, Plo inini) is dis ibu ed
in he O ien al egion. To da e, eigh species ha e been desc ibed, all o which a e
cu en ly eco ded om China. A new species, Plo ina nanlingensis Lin & Wang, sp.
no . is desc ibed om he Nanling Na ional Na u e Rese e in China. Mo phological
de ails and geni alia o he new species a e p esen ed. A checklis o all known spe-
cies in his genus is also p o ided.

In oduc ion
The genus Plo ina Lewis, 1896 (Coleop e a, Coccinellidae, Plo inini) was es-
ablished by Lewis (1896) o accommoda e a single species om Japan,
P. e sicolo Lewis, 1896, which is cha ac e ized by a do sal icolo pa e n.
Made (1931) examined a syn ype o P. e sicolo and eassigned he spe-
cies o he ibe Coelop e ini. This placemen was adop ed by Ko sche sky
(1931) in his ca alogue. Subsequen ly, Made (1955a) desc ibed P. muelle i
om Fujian, China, and Ko ář (1995) added a hi d species, P. quad iocu-
la a, om Thailand. Miya ake (1969) e ised he genus Plo ina and ela ed
gene a (Sphae oplo ina Miya ake, 1969, Haemoplo ina Miya ake, 1969, Pa-
laeoneis C o ch, 1874, Pa aplo ina Miya ake, 1969 and Bup es ode a Sica d,
1911), sugges ing ha hey exhibi a close phylogene ic a ini y based on
simila i ies in geni al s uc u es and many ex e nal s uc u al cha ac e s.
La e , Miya ake (1994) p oposed he ibe Plo inini o he genus Plo ina and
he a o emen ioned ela ed gene a. Wang e al. (2011)desc ibed ou addi-
ional new species o Plo ina: P. oc omacula a, P. menghaiensis, P. daweis-
hanensis and P. signa ella.
In his s udy, we epo a new species o Plo ina om Guangdong P o ince,
China, p o iding a de ailed desc ip ion and illus a ions. An upda ed checklis
o he known species o Plo ina is also p esen ed.

Ma e ial and me hods
Examined specimens a e deposi ed a he Depa men o En omology,
Sou h China Ag icul u e Uni e si y (SCAU), Guangzhou, China. All ma e ials
we e p ese ed in 85% e hanol. Ex e nal mo phology was obse ed using
a dissec ing s e eoscope (Zeiss S emi 2000–CS). The ollowing measu e-
men s we e aken wi h an ocula mic ome e : leng h om apical ma gin o
clypeus o apex o ely a (TL); wid h ac oss bo h ely a a wides pa (TW);
heigh a highes ely al pa (TH); head wid h a wides pa including eyes
(HW); p ono al leng h a longes pa (PL); p ono al wid h a wides pa
(PW); ely al leng h a longes pa (EL); and ely al wid h ac oss bo h ely a
a wides pa (EW). Male and emale geni alia we e dissec ed, clea ed in a
10% solu ion o NaOH by boiling o se e al minu es, and examined wi h an
Olympus BX51 compound mic oscope.
Pho og aphs we e imaged wi h a digi al came a (Qimagin 5.0 RTV and Cool-
snap–P oc & CRI Mic o*Colo ) moun ed on he dissec ing mic oscope. Image
cap u e was pe o med wi h he Image-P o Plus 5.1 so wa e, and pho os we e
p ocessed and a anged in o pla es using Adobe Pho oshop CS 8.0. Mo pho-
logical e minology ollows Ślipiński (2007).

Diagnosis. Species closely esembles P. muelle i (Fig. 2a–h) in gene al mo -
phology. The newly desc ibed species is sepa a ed om he la e based on he
ollowing ea u es: P. nanlingensis has a ma kedly la ge body, lacks wo p om-
inen ounded whi e spo s on he p ono um, and a la ge, elonga e black spo
on he middle ely on. Penis guide o P. nanlingensis in en al iew is obus ,
a ow-shaped, wi h a conca e base. In la e al iew, he penis guide is subpa al-
lel along basal 2/3, hen apidly ape s o a poin a he apex.
Desc ip ion. Measu emen s: TL: 5.37–5.93 mm, TW: 4.24–4.69 mm, TH:
2.34–2.89 mm, TL/TW: 1.26–1.27; PL/PW: 0.30–0.32; EL/EW: 1.05–1.06.
Head eddish-b own, eyes da k b own (Fig. 1c). P ono um da k ed-
