discussions ocused on Bi coin’s echnological s uc u e and
ideological ounda ions, emphasizing decen aliza ion and
esis ance o ins i u ional con ol (Nakamo o, 2008). Howe e ,

unde g ound economies. Meiklejohn e al. (2013) demons a ed
ha despi e i s c yp og aphic p o ec ions, blockchain anspa ency
could allow ansac ional analysis unde ce ain condi ions.
S udies by Foley e al. (2019) es ima ed ha a signi ican po ion o
Bi coin ansac ions we e linked o illegal ac i i ies, including d ug
ma ke s, illegal weapons sales, and human a icking. The da kne
ma ke ecosys em, acili a ed by anonymi y b owse s such as To ,
enables endo s and buye s o conduc c iminal ansac ions while
minimizing he isk o de ec ion (Ma in, 2014). The akedown o
Silk Road and subsequen pla o ms e ealed e ol ing c iminal
adap abili y, whe e o ende s con inuously mig a ed o new
enc yp ed ma ke places (Déca y-Hé u & Giommoni, 2017).

This s udy adop s a quali a i e esea ch me hodology g ounded in
seconda y da a analysis. The p ima y aim is o in es iga e he
c iminological pa e ns, ope a ional dynamics, and socio-economic
implica ions o Bi coin-linked o ences wi hin he in isible digi al
economy. The esea ch ollows an in e p e i is pa adigm, which is
sui able o explo ing he mo i a ions and con ex ual meanings
behind cybe -enabled c iminal ac i i ies.
3.1 Da a Collec ion
Da a was ga he ed om mul iple c edible sou ces, including pee -
e iewed jou nal a icles, law en o cemen publica ions (e.g.,
Eu opol and In e pol epo s), blockchain analy ics epo s
(Chainalysis, Ellip ic), and go e nmen egula o y amewo ks
published be ween 2013 and 2024. This ensu ed he inclusion o
up- o-da e insigh s on bo h his o ical and eme ging ends in
c yp o- ela ed o ences.
3.2 Da a Analysis
A hema ic analysis app oach was employed. Rele an li e a u e
and case epo s we e sys ema ically e iewed, coded, and
ca ego ized in o hema ic domains including

4. Findings and Discussion
The analysis o seconda y da a and hema ic coding e ealed
se e al c i ical pa e ns in how Bi coin is u ilized wi hin he
in isible c iminal economy. The indings sugges ha Bi coin’s
appeal o o ende s is shaped by h ee p ima y ac o s:
pseudonymi y, decen alized con ol, and global ans e abili y.
While blockchain ansac ions a e anspa en , o ende s exploi
echnical gaps, egula o y inconsis encies, and anonymi y-
enhancing ools o conceal iden i ies and inancial ails. This
sec ion discusses he key indings ac oss he majo c ime
ca ego ies obse ed in he da ase .

4.1 Ransomwa e and Ex o ion-Based O ences

consequences o ansomwa e ope a ions ied o c yp ocu ency
ansac ions (Foley e al., 2019). Al hough blockchain acing ools
ha e imp o ed, h ea ac o s inc easingly u ilize mixe s, p i acy
walle s, and chain-hopping o obscu e ansac ional ails
(Chainalysis, 2023).

na co ics, coun e ei cu ency, i ea ms, and exploi a i e digi al
con en (Ma in, 2014). Pla o ms like Silk Road, AlphaBay, and
Hyd a elied hea ily on Bi coin o acili a e anonymous buye -
selle in e ac ions. Findings indica e ha Bi coin enables us in
anonymous ma ke s by ac ing as a s able exchange medium in
en i onmen s wi hou legal con ac en o cemen (Déca y-Hé u &
Giommoni, 2017). The cyclical pa e n o da kne ma ke
akedowns ollowed by apid e-eme gence highligh s o ende
adap abili y and challenges o law en o cemen ope a ions.
4.3 Money Launde ing Mechanisms
Bi coin is widely used o laye ing and in eg a ion s ages o money
launde ing. O ende s ans e illici unds h ough mul iple
walle s, exchanges, mixing se ices, and decen alized pla o ms o
mask asse o igins (B enig e al., 2015). Resul s show ha
launde ing schemes inc easingly exploi ju isdic ional egula o y
loopholes, pa icula ly in coun ies wi h weak Know You
Cus ome (KYC) and An i-Money Launde ing (AML) p o ocols.
P i acy coins such as Mone o and umbling se ices u he
complica e ansac ion acing and iden i y linkage (Campbell-
Ve duyn, 2018).
4.4 In es men F aud and Ponzi Schemes

claims (Alb ech e al., 2019). The decen alized na u e o Bi coin

oppo uni ies (Cohen & Felson, 1979).

ha e imp o ed, agencies s ill ace limi a ions in expe ise, c oss-
bo de coope a ion, and apid echnological change. This p oduces
a pe sis en imbalance whe e o ende s adap as e han egula o s
and in es iga o s.
4.6 Discussion
The indings indica e ha Bi coin-linked c ime does no esul
om echnological design alone bu om s uc u al socio-
economic oppo uni ies wi hin global digi al en i onmen s.
Bi coin’s anspa ency pa adox—public ledge isibili y ye
p ac ical anonymi y—illus a es i s dual ole as bo h an inno a ion
