(MOOC) ‘The Open Da a Ecosys emʼ. This ee online cou se aims o dissemina e he ODECO

The a ge g oup o p ac i ione s includes manage s and o he pe sonnel o all he a ge g oups
ha a e pa o he ODECO p ojec , including public o ganiza ions, businesses, de elope s, Non-
Go e nmen al O ganisa ions (NGOs), s uden s, and jou nalis s. Hence, he MOOC has a wide
a ge audience. The MOOC is o in e es o anyone in e es ed in o occupied wi h open da a
sha ing and ( e)use. The MOOCʼs key objec i e is o allow pa icipan s o mas e he basics o da a
and open da a ecosys ems, in da a-d i en esea ch, and g asp he key p inciples su ounding open
da a ecosys ems.
1.2 Lea ning objec i es o he ESRs
Now ha he ODECO p ojec is ongoing o 45 mon hs, he in ol ed Ea ly S age Resea che s
(ESRs) ha e made conside able p og ess conce ning hei esea ch. Beyond he o mal objec i e
o his deli e able, he MOOC was also an ideal way o he ODECO ESRs o de elop new skills. I
s imula ed he ESRs o:
• e lec on hei esea ch indings and summa ize hese indings in a ideo o a maximum o
six minu es;
• connec hei indings o he key hemes o he ODECO p ojec (use -d i enness, inclusi eness,
and ci cula i y) o imp o e he connec ions be ween c oss-cu ing hemes;
• o mula e hei indings in a way ha is unde s andable o a wide audience beyond scien is s;
• apply Open Science p ac ices and sp ead he knowledge ha has been c ea ed wi hin he
ODECO p ojec beyond he p ojec conso ium;
• lea n how o de elop new online aining ma e ial based on hei esea ch;
• conside li elong lea ning beyond he p ojec du a ion.
1.3 Massi e Open Online Cou ses (MOOCs)
The MOOC should be iewed om he wide mo emen o Open Science. Open Science
encompasses a ange o ini ia i es, including Open Access (making scien i ic li e a u e eely
a ailable), Open Da a (sha ing he p ima y da ase s om esea ch o go e nmen wo k), and Open
Educa ion (p omo ing he open licensing o eaching and esea ch ma e ials as open educa ional
esou ces) [1].
The MOOC is ela ed o Open Science in wo majo ways. Fi s , con en -wise, open da a is one key
aspec o Open Science [2]. One o he mos c ucial elemen s o he success o open science is
open da a, as i is an essen ial p e equisi e o ep oducibili y and scien i ic p og ess [3]. When
as amoun s o in o ma ion can be e ec i ely il e ed, analysed, p ocessed, and ecombined, his
inc eases he oppo uni ies o imp o ing quali y and boos ing p oduc i i y [1]. Second, he
MOOC eaches he ESRs abou how o openly sha e hei esea ch indings and con ibu es o
applying Open Science p inciples – including open educa ion – o hei own esea ch. Hence, in
he ODECO p ojec , Open Science was iden i ied as one o he gene ic esea ch hemes ha is
ele an o ESRsʼ indi idual esea ch p ojec s and ha ESRs should be ained in (see WP1
desc ip ion).

TU Del de ines MOOCs as “ eely accessible and open-licensed sho cou ses, deli e ed o la ge
g oups o lea ne s ully online” [4]1. Acco ding o he li e a u e, MOOCs can be de ined acco ding
o hei ou componen s: massi e, open, online, and cou se [5]:
• Massi e. The e m ‘massi eʼ can be unde s ood in a ious ways; howe e , [5] de ines he
h eshold o 150 lea ne s as an ini ial benchma k. The e m massi e may be used o ma k he
ansi ion o a MOOC om a ‘g oup,ʼ whe e pa icipan s a e amilia wi h one ano he , o a
‘ne wo k,ʼ de ined by b oade in e ac ions [5].
• Open. Openness is o en ega ded as he g ea es challenge acing MOOCs and hei o e all
quali y. Openness ypically e e s o un es ic ed access, howe e , a numbe o MOOCs ha e
sign-up equi emen s, admission c i e ia, and ees [5] (e.g. o ea ning ce i ica es). As a esul ,
he e has been deba e o e whe he such cou ses should uly be conside ed open [5]. In his
deli e able we conside he openness componen s om he pe spec i e o using open
me hodologies, meaning inno a i e Lea ning and educa ion app oaches, which has also been
a gued by o he schola s [6] [7].
• Online. MOOCs need o be o e ed online since ha is he only way o each a la ge numbe
o lea ne s. The e o e, he e should no be any o line ac i i ies equi ed o ully ake pa in
he MOOC [5].
• Cou se. The e m ‘cou seʼ is o en de ined as a sequence o e en s wi h a se beginning, a se
conclusion, and a sha ed cen al heme. Howe e , mos MOOCs combine a ious o ma s and
a e ypically deli e ed wi hin a ela i ely sho ime ame [5].
1.4 Ad an ages and disad an ages o MOOCs
Va ious ad an ages o MOOCs ha e been iden i ied in he li e a u e. Zakha o a and Tanasenko [8]

eaching po olio. They can lead o inno a i e eaching expe iences, using new educa ional
o ma s, and inc eased knowledge sha ing.
3. Accessibili y and social mobili y. MOOCs o e b oad access o educa ion, eaching di e se
audiences including adul lea ne s and indi iduals om a ound he wo ld. They suppo sel -
paced lea ning and a e ypically ee o cha ge. They democ a ize access o high-quali y
cou ses augh by leading academics.
Va ious disad an ages ha e also been iden i ied. Fo ins ance, [8] s a e ha he c ea ion o MOOCs
and he in e ac ion wi h lea ne s can be highly ime-consuming, and ha lea ning o ma s may
no be pe ec as hese a e no adjus ed o indi idual lea ne s.

Open Da a Ecosys emʼ was p epa ed in such a way ha i was complemen a y o exis ing open
da a MOOCs ha had al eady been c ea ed by se e al bene icia ies. The MOOC builds on he
eigh modules o he ODECO online aining p og am. While he online aining p og am ocused
on open da a basic knowledge, he MOOC in eg a ed new insigh s ha we e de i ed om he
esea ch conduc ed by he ESRs o e he pas ew yea s. The MOOC in eg a ed con ibu ions om
he esea ch o all i een ESRs on a ious aspec s o open da a ecosys ems.
The p epa a ions o his deli e able s a ed in Ap il 2024. Du ing he aining week a KU Leu en,
an app oach o he c ea ion o he MOOC was p oposed o he conso ium. This app oach
included:
• examining which o he h ee hemes - inclusi eness, ci cula i y, o use -d i enness – he ESRs
ela ed he mos o;
• discussing in g oups wha app oach owa ds he MOOC would be mos impac ul o socie y
and easible o he ODECO conso ium.
Du ing he aining week a KU Leu en, we discussed ha each ESR would con ibu e one ideo
o he MOOC, ela ed o ei he he heme o inclusi eness, ci cula i y, o use -d i enness.
Du ing he mee ing a KU Leu en, all conso ium pa ne s ag eed on he ollowing schedule:
1. June 2024: ideo ins uc ions and s a o ideo de elopmen .
2. Sep embe 2024: Finaliza ion o ideo sc ip s by ESRs and eedback by supe iso s and he
p ojec coo dina o (check o consis ency/alignmen ).
3. Oc obe 2024: Video eco dings in Del .
4. No embe 2024 – Feb ua y 2025: Video edi ing and checking.
5. May 2025: MOOC eady.
6. July 2025 – July 2026: E alua ion.
In he ollowing subsec ions, we epo on each o hese s eps.
2.1 June 2024: ideo ins uc ions and s a o ideo de elopmen
All ESRs we e asked o email hei i s and second choice ega ding which o he h ee MOOC
hemes hey p e e ed o con ibu e o: inclusi eness, use -d i enness, and/o ci cula i y. In June
2024, TU Del di ided all i een ESRs among he h ee p ojec hemes, accommoda ing hei
p e e ences as much as possible. Each g oup was eques ed o show in hei ideos how hey
ela ed o he heme.
The deadline o submi ing he slides and sc ip s was 1 Sep embe 2024. To ensu e consis ency
be ween he ideos and o suppo he ESRs as much as possible, TU Del sen speci ic guidelines
o he ESRs. The ins uc ions conce ned bo h he s uc u e o he ideo p esen a ion and he
eco ding p ocess.
The ins uc ions ela ed o he ideo s uc u e included he ollowing:
• Use he ollowing s uc u e o he ideo p esen a ions (qui e simila o he se up o a pape :
• 2-3 slides in oduc ion o he opic. The i s slide should explain how you ideo
ela es o he heme o inclusi eness/ ci cula i y/ o use -d i enness.

• Use he ODECO empla e o he slides.
• On he slides, only use keywo ds. E en be e : use isuals ins ead o ex whe e e you can
(see example a ached).
• While eco ding, you will use he au ocue and will no see he slides you sel . You will only
look in o he came a ha has he ex /au ocue. Someone else will click o go o he nex slide
o you. Hence, you need o c ea e a sc ip in which you indica e wha you wan o say o
each slide and when someone should click (see a ached example).
• Use anima ions in you ideo, meaning no all ex /elemen s o isuals appea a once. Indica e
in he sc ip when he ideo eco ding eam should ‘clickʼ o make you ex / isual appea .
• The sc ip should no be longe han 1,000 wo ds, and close o 800 wo ds would be ideal. No
mo e han 6 minu es in o al.
• I is nice o s a he sc ip wi h a ease o a ques ion ha makes he iewe in e es ed in
seeing mo e o he ideo, e en be o e you discuss he p oblem o objec i e o you s udy.
• P ac ice he sc ip in combina ion wi h you slides and see i his wo ks well. Nea ly always,

2.2 Sep embe 2024: Finaliza ion o ideo sc ip s by ESRs and eedback by supe iso s

In Sep embe 2024, all he ESRs had o sha e he sc ip s and slides o hei ideo p esen a ions
wi h Anneke Zuide wijk and Bas iaan an Loenen (TU Del ). They o ganized eedback sessions, in
which hey p o ided eedback o he sc ip s and ideo p esen a ion slides o all he ESRs.
Mo eo e , each ESR had o e iew he sc ip and slides o ano he ESR wi hin hei g oup, hence
applying a pee e iew p ocess. All sc ip s we e sha ed wi h all ESRs in a sha ed MS Teams
en i onmen o s imula e pee lea ning. The esul s o he e iew p ocess we e no ed in he sha ed
documen s and discussed in h ee online mee ings, one o each heme. A e his mee ing, he
ESRs s ill had a ew weeks o p ocess he eedback hey ga he ed be o e submi ing he inal
e sions o hei sc ip s and slides o Anneke Zuide wijk (TU Del ) in mid-Oc obe .
2.3 Oc obe 2024: Video eco dings in Del
All he MOOC ideos we e eco ded a TU Del in Del , he Ne he lands. This ensu ed consis ency
be ween he ideos, and TU Del has excellen acili ies and suppo o p o essional ideo
eco dings. TU Del has been de eloping MOOCs ac oss a b oad ange o subjec a eas since
2013. Mo e han h ee million people wo ldwide ha e en olled in TU Del ʼs MOOCs, which o m
pa o TU Del 's commi men o open educa ion. [1]
A s uden assis an who had been ained in he eco ding and edi ing o ideos o educa ional
pu poses p epa ed he sc ip s and slides o eco ding. Fo ins ance, when he ex on a slide
would need o be adjus ed o make su e he p esen ing ESR would no be s anding in on o he
ex , he s uden assis an adjus ed he posi ion o he ex . In some si ua ions, his was done a e
he eco dings.
On h ee di e en days in Oc obe 2024 (28, 29, 31 Oc obe ), he ESRs eco ded hei ideos
physically in a p o essional s udio a TU Del . Mos ideos we e eco ded wo o h ee imes, and
he bes eco dings we e selec ed o he inal ideo. The s uden assis an suppo ed he
eco dings and he edi ing o he ideos a e wa ds. All ideos we e eco ded in on o a g een
sc een, which p o ided lexibili y in he edi ing p ocess.

The ideos we e edi ed by he s uden assis an and hen o wa ded o he in ol ed ESR, Anneke
Zuide wijk, and Bas iaan an Loenen (TU Del ) o a inal check. Some mino mis akes we e s ill
co ec ed, such as mino language e o s on he slides.
2.5 May 2025: MOOC eady
On he i s o May, an in oduc ion ideo was eco ded by Bas iaan an Loenen and Anneke
Zuide wijk o TU Del . This ideo was c ea ed o in oduce he i een ESR ideos. When all he
ideos we e comple e, he pla o m o dissemina ing hem was decided upon. We ob ained
ad ice om an expe in li elong lea ning (Joos G oo -Ko melink, TU Del ) o conside he mos
app op ia e pla o ms o he dissemina ion o he MOOC.
E en ually, he decision was made o selec he B i ish OpenLea n pla o m. OpenLea n C ea e
( o me ly OpenLea n Wo ks) is a pionee ing open educa ional pla o m ha enables indi iduals
and o ganiza ions o publish and sha e open con en , cou ses, and esou ces. Buil on he Moodle
open-sou ce e-lea ning sys em, i o e s ea u es o collabo a ion, euse, and emixing o
ma e ials, and suppo s he use o Open Badges. OpenLea n C ea e ope a es as a sis e si e o
OpenLea n, which hos s specially designed open con en om The Open Uni e si y. OpenLea n
C ea e cu en ly o e s mo e han 450 li e public cou ses and 70 addi ional esou ces, such as
a icles and o he lea ning ma e ials. The pla o m a ac s app oxima ely 3.4 million isi o s
annually.
We selec ed OpenLea n C ea e because o he bene i s i o e s, including:
• he abili y o pe sonalize lea ning ma e ials;
• a low-ba ie en i onmen o collabo a i ely de eloping educa ional con en ;
• a space o explo e and es new echnologies and inno a i e app oaches o lea ning;

2.6 July 2025 – July 2027: E alua ion
In he ollowing yea s, we will e alua e he impac o he MOOC. This will be done by e iewing
he numbe o pa icipan s o he MOOC, he esponses and commen s hey p o ide on he
MOOC, and po en ial e e ences o he MOOC ideos (e.g., in o he ideos and blogs). I he
esponses and commen s p o ided by he MOOC pa icipan s a e po en ially eason o imp o e
he MOOC, we will conside his and adjus he MOOC acco dingly.

quizzes, discussion o ums, and sel -assessmen ools o imp o e engagemen wi h he MOOC
