Snow c abs a e dis ibu ed along he Wes coas
o G eenland and a e comme cially exploi ed
p ima ily om Disko Bay in he No h (up o 71
30N) o Paamiu in he Sou h (60 45N).
Comme cial ishe y o snow c ab began p ima ily
in insho e a eas (wi hin basis-line) in he mid-
1990s and om 1999, also included o sho e
a eas (ou side basis-line).
Since 2004, he c ab esou ce in G eenland has
been managed in 6 a eas ( om No h o Sou h -
Upe na ik, Uummannaq-Disko Bay, Sisimiu ,
Manii soq-Kangaamiu , Nuuk-Paamiu and
Na saq-Qaqo oq, see Fig. 1). The ishing lee is
made up o wo componen s; small essels (less
han 75 GRT), which ha e exclusi e igh s o
ishing insho e wi hin he basis-line as well as
o sho e. Small essels a e, howe e , es ic ed o
ishing in only 2 managemen a ea du ing he
yea . La ge essels (g ea e han 75 GRT) may
only ish in all o sho e a eas (ou side he basis-
line), bu no wi hin he “C ab Boxes”. Quo a
es ic ions ha e been imposed o each o he 6
managemen a ea since 1995 and indi idual
quo as o essels la ge > 75 GRT, bu ha e only
limi ed he ca ch in 2004. Managemen decisions
allow inc easing quo a in each o he 6
managemen a ea, when he ca ch achie ed he
i s ixed quo a. Un-used quo a om la ge
essels is e-alloca ed o he insho e lee (small
essels < 75 GRT). Basically, he e is now quo a
es ic ion o he small essel.
The ishe y is egula ed by p ohibi ions o land
emales and unde sized males (<100 mm CW),
logbooks o all essels la ge han 10 me e s and
closu e o he ishe y no h o 64°N o 3 mon hs
(1 Janua y o 31 Ma ch). The e is also a
egula ion ha s a es mo emen o he ishing
e o when so -shelled c abs exceed 20% o he
ca ch, howe e he e m “mo emen ” is no
speci ic and his is no moni o ed. F om 2005 o
2007, he o sho e c ab ishe y was closed in he
managemen a eas Manii soq-Kangaamiu and
om 2005 o Augus 2007 in he o sho e a ea o
Sisimiu excep o dispensa ion o 1 essel ha
was allowed o ish in 2005. Only in 2006, he
ishe y was closed o 2½ mon hs (July 1 o
Sep embe 15) in all a eas excep Uumannaq-
Disko Bay (closed only 1 mon h om July 1 –
Augus 3) o p o ec so -shelled c abs.

The numbe o essels wi h licenses o pa icipa e
in he snow c ab ishe y inc eased by mo e han a
ac o o 3 om app ox. 120 o 374 boa s om
1999-2002. Since hen he numbe o bo h la ge
and small essels ha e dec eased subs an ially
as he abundance o he esou ce has also
declined. In 2008 he numbe license holde s
amoun ed 74 in all managemen a eas an 80%
educ ion compa ed o 2002. In 2009 numbe o
license inc eased o 117.
G eenland Ins i u e o Na u al Resou ces (GINR)
p o ide s ock assessmen and o al allowable
ca ch (TAC) ad ice o he s ock bo h insho e and
o sho e wi hin each managemen a ea when
su icien da a is a ailable. The decision o gi e
ad ice o bo h insho e and o sho e a eas was
based on he assump ion ha snow c ab mig a-
ion is limi ed ( agging s udies ha e indica ed
app ox. 10 km pe yea ) and he e o e he esou -
ce in di e en a eas is conside ed o be spa ially
independen .
Comme cial ishe y da a
Logbooks om he la ge essels >75 GRT ha e
been manda o y since 1999 in conjunc ion wi h
he s a o o sho e ishing wi h essels o his
size. Logbooks o he small essels (<75 GRT)
we e i s manda o y om July 2002, and hus i s
co e ed he annual ishe y in 2003. Only landing
s a is ics a e a ailable om boa s less han 10
me e s as hey a e no equi ed o epo ca ches
in logbooks.
Ca ch, E o and CPUE
The his o ical de elopmen o he c ab ishe y in
G eenland is shown in Figu e 2. Landings
inc eased om app ox. 1,000 ons in 1995 o a
peak o app ox. 15,000 ons (Quo a 26,800 ons)
in 2001 (based on landings om small essels
and ca ch om logbook da a om la ge essels
>75 GRT). F om 2001 o 2007 o al ca ch
dec eased by app ox. 89% o 2,189 ons (Quo a
4,380 ons). Landings inc ease o 3,191 ons
(Quo a 4,680 ons) in 2009 and p elimina y da a
indica e an addi ional dec ease in landings in
2010 (app ox. 1.800 ons ul imo Oc obe 2010,
Quo a 4,050 ons).
In 2008 and 2009 quo a was inc eased om 500
ons o 800 ons in he managemen a ea Sisimiu
and om 700 ons o 1000 ons in Nuuk - Paamiu
managemen a ea (only in 2009). The inc easing
quo a was based on e-alloca ion ( emo ing a pa
o he quo a om i e essels > 75 GRT) allowing
small essel < 75 GRT o inc ease ca ches
insho e as well as o sho e.
The dis ibu ion o landings and geog aphic
dis ibu ion o he ishe y in each managemen
a ea in Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, show ha mos o he
landings in 2008 ha e p edomina ely come om
managemen Sisimiu (42%), whe e as Disko
Bay–Uummanaq and Nuuk-Paamiu amoun ed
27% and 26% espec i ely o he o al landings.
The o al ishing e o ( ap hauls) has declined by
91% since 2001 ( om 3,416 o 323 housand ap
hauls du ing 2001-2008) (Fig. 3). The decline has
been mos ly due o a declining numbe o
pa icipan s in he ishe y. P elimina y and incom-
ple e logbook da a o 2010 shows o al e o is
220 housand ap hauls. The o e all dis ibu ion
o he ishe y along he Wes coas o G eenland
om 2003-2009, de i ed om a ailable logbook
da a is shown in Figu e 4.
Resea ch Su eys
Since 1997, ap su eys ha e been conduc ed
annually in insho e a eas o Disko Bay and Sisi-
miu . In 2000, a Sisimiu o sho e a ea (Hols eins-
bo g Dyb) was included in he Sisimiu ap
su ey. In 2002, annual o sho e ap su eys
we e ini ia ed in a eas be ween Nuuk and Paamiu
and in 2003 we e ex ended no h o include he
o sho e in he Manii soq-Kangaamiu manage-
men a ea.

Me hods
Snow c abs a e sampled wi h Japanese-s yle
conical aps wi h la ge (70 mm) and small (21
mm) mesh sizes. Sampling s a ions a e a p ede-
e mined ixed posi ions o all yea s and soak
imes ange be ween 14-24 h s depending on
wea he condi ions. Bo om empe a u es a e e-
co ded a each s a ion.
Fo males, he ca apace wid h (CW) and chela
heigh (CH) a e measu ed (± 0.01 mm) o de e -
mine size and mol s a us (adolescen o adul ).
Male snow c abs s op g owing a e hei e minal
moul . Sexually ma u e males a e e e ed o as
adolescen s ( ecognized by hei small claws)
p io o he e minal mol and as adul s a e hei
e minal mol (la ge claws). Males each legal size
(100 mm CW) a abou 9 yea s o age. The
ange o ca apace wid hs de ining he adolescen
male g oups which a e p esumably 1, 2 and 3
yea s om ec ui men o legal size a e: ADO-1,
82.2-100mm CW; ADO-2, 67.3-82.2mm CW and
ADO-3, 53.2-67.3mm CW.
Fo emales, he CW and abdomen wid h (AW)
a e measu ed (± 0.01mm) o de e mine size and
ma u i y. Females ha ha e ma ed once and a e
ca ying hei i s clu ch o eggs a e called
p imipa ous, while emales ha a e ca ying hei
second clu ch and ha e ma ed mo e han once
a e called mul ipa ous. They a e dis inguishable
by he numbe o sca s on hei legs caused by
ma ing and by shell condi ions. Shell condi ion in
bo h males and emales is de e mined on a scale
o 1-5 acco ding o guidelines by Sain e-Ma ie
(1993).
Da a om ap su ey ca ches o males a e used
o de e mine CPUE (kg/ ap), mean CW o legal-
size males, shell condi ion and NPUE (numbe -
/ ap) o adolescen males o assess ec ui men
p ospec s. Male and emales size dis ibu ions a e
also desc ibed o ollow he p og ession o size
modes h ough he popula ions and de e mine p i-
mipa ous/mul ipa ous a ios wi hin he emale po-
pula ion.
Insho e su eys in Disko Bay and Sisimiu
In Disko Bay, 43 s a ions a e sampled annually
(Fig. 5a) and in Sisimiu , 40 s a ions a e sampled
(Fig. 5b), om May o June. The sampling gea
consis s o a longline o 10 la ge-mesh (70mm)
and 2 small-mesh (21mm) conical aps ished a
dep hs anging om 100-600m. T aps a e placed
app ox. 40m apa and bai ed wi h squid.
O sho e su eys in Sisimiu , Manii soq and Nuuk-
Paamiu
Fi een s a ions a e sampled annually in Sisimiu
o sho e (Fig. 5b) in June and a o al o 30-60 s a-
ions a e sampled in he Nuuk-Paamiu and Ma-
nii soq o sho e a eas in Augus -Sep embe (Fig.
5c). The sampling me hod in Sisimiu o sho e is
he same as he me hod used insho e in Disko
Bay and Sisimiu . In 2002, he sampling in he
Nuuk-Paamiu o sho e su ey was also he same
as he me hod insho e. In 2003, howe e , he
o sho e sampling me hod used in Nuuk-Paamiu
and Manii soq was changed such ha each
s a ion was hen sampled using a long line o 16
aps, eigh la ge-meshed aps al e na ing wi h
eigh small-meshed aps a app ox. 40m apa
and bai ed wi h squid.

No sampling om he comme cial ishe y has
been conduc ed since he ishe y began in 1996.
A ailable logbook and landing s a is ics is used in
da a analysis om he comme cial ishe y. Log-
books nominal ca ches has since 2003 co e ed
mo e han 85% o he o al landings in G eenland.
Be o e 2003 less han 20% o he ishing lee
we e using logbooks.
In o de o calcula e a s anda dised CPUE index,
a GLM analysis (mul iaddi i e model) was ca ied
ou using haul by haul logbook in o ma ion

mon h and essel e ec s.
Managemen a ea: Uummannaq-Disko Bay
The his o ical ca ch, CPUE and e o da a o he
ishe y in Uummannaq-Disko Bay in he insho e
and o sho e a eas a e summa ized in Table 2.
Da a o 2010 a e p elimina y.
One o he mos impo an ishing a eas has been
Disko Bay whe e ca ches a e p edomina ely om
he insho e. To al ca ches peaked a 4,202 ons
(94% insho e) in 2001 and since hen ha e s eadi-
ly declined o 657 ons (84% insho e) in 2009, ap-
p oxima ely 16% o he 2001 ca ch.
Numbe o pe mi s as well as numbe o ac i e
essels has dec eased o e ime. In 2003, 43
pe mi s we e gi en o he managemen a ea, bu
only 31 essels we e ac i e ha yea . In 2009
he e 22 pe mi s we e issued and 12 essels we e
pa icipa ed in he ishe y.
Insho e - Disko Bay
Fishe y
The dis ibu ion o he ishe y in Disko Bay om
2003 o 2008, acco ding o a ailable logbook da a
is shown in Figu e 6. Fishing g ounds include bo h
Vaiga , a ea “Disko No h” and “Disko Sou h”. The
geog aphic dis ibu ion o he ishe y has been
homogeneous in he pe iod om 2003 o 2008,
al hough o al ca ches, CPUE used e o has
changed ma kedly. In con as o he p e ious
yea s, 2009 and 2010 p elimina y da a indica e a
e y limi ishe y in he a ea “Disko No h”.
The ishe y in Disko Bay s a s in Ap il, peaks
du ing he summe mon hs (June-July) and
s eadily declines owa ds he end o he yea ,
excep in 2007 when he ishe y inc eased du ing
all and peaked in Oc obe (Fig. 7). The empo al
pa e n o CPUE in 2009 showed CPUE peaked in
July and Augus and dec eased as he season
p og essed.
A s anda dized CPUE index (Fig. 8), show a
signi ican d opped in CPUE om 2001 o 2004
om app ox. 7.6 kg/ ap o 3.6 kg/ ap (F= 37.04,
P < 0.0001). In he ollowing yea s CPUE has
s aidly inc eased o app ox. 5 kg/ ap in 2008 and
2009. P elimina y da a o 2010 indica e s able
ends in CPUE (Table 2) and (Fig. 8).
F om 2000-2001 ca ches insho e inc eased om
2,940 – 3,950 ons as e o mo e han doubled
( able 2). CPUE, howe e , dec eased om 4.8 o
3.1 kg pe ap. Ca ches and e o ha e
signi ican ly declined since 2001 by app oxima ely
88% o 471 ons and 93 housand ap hauls,
espec i ely, in 2009 (Table 2 and Fig. 8).
S anda dized soak ime index (Fig. 9), shows a
signi ican ly dec ease in soak ime om 2001 o
2002. Since 2003 soak ime inc eased s eadily
un il 2007, a a le el o a e age 72 hou pe hauls
and compa able o 2001 le el.
Resea ch Su eys
Resea ch Su eys
T ap su eys ha e been conduc ed in 2 insho e
a eas o Disko Bay since 1997 (See Fig. 5a o
maps).
Impo an : Owing o he b eakdown o he main
engine a he esea ch ship Adol Jensen, he
su ey has been cancelled in 2009. In 2008
su ey was only conduc ed in he No he n pa o
Disko Bay. No new su ey da a is a ailable o he
s ock assessmen and ad ice.
S anda dized CPUE o legal-size males (100mm
CW) in Sou h dec eased subs an ially since 2001
by mo e han 50% om 4.2-1.7 kg/ ap. Subse-
quen ly CPUE s eadily inc ease in 2007 compa -
able wi h he 2001 le el. A decline in CPUE o xx
kg/ ap has been obse ed in 2010 (Fig. 10).
In No h s anda dized CPUE declined om 7.5-2.3
kg/ ap in No h om 2001 o he lowes obse ed
le el in he ime se ies in 2004 (Fig. 10). In 2005
CPUE was s ill conside ably low, bu inc eased o

6.4 kg/ ap in 2006 ollowed by a decline in 2007
o 4.4 kg/ ap. F om 2008 o 2010 CPUE ha e
emained s able a app oxima ely 5 kg/ ap.
The mean ca apace wid h (CW) o legal-size
males had con inually declined in bo h su ey
a eas o a minimum in 2004 (Fig. 11). CW subse-
quen ly inc eased in bo h a eas in 2005 and
emaining unchanged in Sou h o 2007, while he
mean CW has inc eased o e he pas 4 yea s in
Disko Bay No h o 116 mm CW in 2008. In 2010
CW d opped o 112 mm CW.
The abundance o adolescen males, 82.2 mm –
100 mm CW (ADO-1) measu ed as numbe pe
ap (NPUE) oscilla e o e he ime se ies in bo h
he No he n and Sou he n pa o Disko Bay (Fig.
12). In Sou h ADO-1 ini ially dec easing om 2002
– 2004 and inc easing o a peak in 2008. In 2010,
a mino decline has been obse ed.
In Disko Bay No h, abundance o ADO-1) peaked
a 2.6/ ap in 2002 (Fig. 12). The NPUE o ADO-1
has since declined sha ply and was a he lowes
le els obse ed o he ime se ies in 2004 and
2007. An addi ional peak was obse ed in 2008
ollowed by a dec ease in 2010 o app ox.

Annual ends in size dis ibu ion o adolescen
and adul males a e shown in Fig. 13. In Sou h
he e was no u he p og ession h ough he size
ange un il 2006. Da a om 2007 implies a ecen
inc ease in ec ui men caused by inc easing
ec ui men o small legal-sized new-shelled since
2005. In 2010 modal was 95mm CW as in 2007,
bu numbe o males > 100 mm was ema kably
lowe in 2007. In he No he n pa o Disko Bay
he ec ui men pulse in 2005, esul ed in
inc easing CPUE and mean CW as legal-sided
adolescen p e- ec ui s mol ed and he
„ ec ui men pulse‟ p og essed h ough he size
ange. The dec ease in ADO-1 males in 2006
showed up clea ly as a educ ion o adul males in
he size ange om 100mm o 130mm CW. In
No h he e was p og ession h ough he size
ange in 2007 and 2008. Da a om 2008 s ongly
implies a ecen inc ease in ec ui men caused by
inc easing ec ui men o small legal-sized new-
shelled since 2006. Fu he mo e in 2008, he
highes p opo ion o adolescen males om 60
mm o app ox. 80 mm CW has been obse ed in
No h (i.e. a mix o ADO2 and ADO3, expec ed o
ec ui o he ishe y wi h in 2 and 3 yea s om
2008). In No h he ec ui men pulse since 2008,

1,339 in 2000 o 761 ons in 2002 (Table 2 and

led o 1,611 ons in 2003 and u he inc eased o
2,033 ons as e o dec eased o 302 housand
ap hauls in 2005. Since ca ches ha e declined

113mm in 2005 (Fig. 39). In 2006 he a e age CW

CW in he no he n a ea (God håbsdyb). A e age
CW was almos unchanged and 114 mm CW in
2010.
Abundance (NPUE) o adolescen males (ADO-1)

1/ ap in 2005 (Fig. 40). The inc ease was,

ne annually since 2007, bu in 2010 numbe ado-

0.3 ADO-1/ ap. Thus, indica ions o imp o ed e-
c ui men in he nea u u e appea o be limi ed
as he abundance o adolescen s is a a low le el
(Fig 40).
Annual size dis ibu ions o male c abs in Nuuk-
Paamiu a ea indica e he e has been some
p og ession o adolescen males in o he legal-
size o he s ock as he wid h o he modal peaks
o adul s ha e ex ended beyond he legal-size (
100mm CW) and ha e g adually h oughou he
yea s un il 2006 become b oade (Fig. 41). In
2006 modal peak eached 105 mm CW whe eas
modal peak was educed o 95mm CW in 2010.
