Summa y
The e a e no speci ic long- e m managemen objec i es o he snow c ab esou ce in
Wes G eenland, howe e since 2004 he main objec i e o ecommenda ions om
GINR has been o s op he decline in biomass o he c ab esou ce in he di e en
managemen a eas.
The ecommenda ions p esen ed he e a e no expec ed o esul in inc eased s ock
biomass in he sho e m, bu only s op he cu en decline I a ebuilding o he s ock
o achie e a highe exploi able biomass and be e ca ch a es is he objec i e hen he
ecommended ca ches should be u he educed o allow he s ock o g ow.
The ca ch le el in Disko Bay should be educed o 1,500 ons, di ided on 300 ons in
he sou he n pa o Disko Bay, 300 ons in he No he n pa o he bay and 900 ons
in Vaiga .
Da a om esea ch su ey sugges he esou ce has show signs o eco e y, excep o
ec ui men which is on a low le el. The o sho e a ea o Sisimiu had been closed o
he pas 2.5 yea , bu e-opened in mid Augus 2007. The comme cial ca ch amoun ed
o 173 ons in he closed pe iod and an addi ional le el o 350 ons was alloca ed o
his a ea, when i e-opened. The e ec o he g ea ly inc eased ca ch in 2007 on he
exploi able biomass o 2008 is unknown. Owing o he low le el o ec ui men , i is
he e o e ecommended ha he a ea emain closed o comme cial exploi a ion.
The ec ui men was ully ha es ed in mos o he managemen a eas. Disko Bay in-
sho e a ea 2 and o sho e Sisimiu a eas a e cha ac e ized by dec easing abundance o
p e- ec ui s.

The Fishe y in he Sisimiu a ea has in ecen yea s concen a ed e o in smalle
geog aphical a eas in he adi ional ishing g ounds as well as alloca ing a conside -
able amoun o e o in new a eas. In his ega d i is no ed ha CPUE is only a good
indica o o s ock biomass when ac o s such as spa ial co e age, e o , season e c.
a e app oxima ely cons an . This is no he case in his a ea and is p obably esponsi-
ble o ishe men main aining s able ca ch a e le els.
The a io o new-shelled ( ecen ly-mol ed) c abs o olde -shelled c abs is mo e han
60% in mos o he managemen a eas indica ing ha comme cial exploi a ion is high
and ha he annual ishe y is based on new ec ui s. The ishe y is he e o e highly
ulne able o luc ua ions in ec ui men .
GINR ecommends a seasonal ishe y om Ap il o July in all managemen a eas o
educe disca ding and associa ed mo ali y o so -shelled c abs and o maximize e-
c ui men o he s ock. Such a seasonal ishe y will also p omo e he mos op imal and
sus ainable u iliza ion o he c ab esou ce.

Snow c abs a e dis ibu ed along he Wes coas o G eenland and a e comme cially ex-
ploi ed p ima ily om Disko Bay in he No h (up o 71 30N) o Paamiu in he Sou h (60
45N). The comme cial c ab ishe y is based on ca ches o males ha each a minimum legal-
size ≥ 100 mm ca apace wid h (CW). Comme cial ishe y o snow c ab began p ima ily in
insho e a eas (wi hin basis-line) in he mid-1990s and om 1999, also included o sho e a -
eas (ou side basis-line).
Since 2004, he c ab esou ce in G eenland has been managed in 6 a eas ( om No h o
Sou h - Upe na ik, Uummannaq-Disko Bay, Sisimiu , Manii soq-Kangaamiu , Nuuk-
Paamiu and Na saq-Qaqo oq, see Fig. 1). The ishing lee is made up o wo componen s;
small essels (less han 75 GRT), which ha e exclusi e igh s o ishing insho e wi hin he
basis-line as well as o sho e. Small essels a e, howe e , es ic ed o ishing in only 1 man-
agemen a ea du ing he yea . La ge essels (g ea e han 75 GRT) may only ish in all o -
sho e a eas (ou side he basis-line), bu no wi hin he “C ab Boxes”. To al allowable ca ch
(TAC) es ic ions ha e been imposed since 1995, bu ha e only limi ed he ca ch in some
a eas since 2004. The ishe y is egula ed by p ohibi ions o land emales and unde sized
males (<100 mm CW), logbooks o all essels la ge han 10 me e s and closu e o he ish-
e y no h o 64°N o 3 mon hs (1 Janua y o 31 Ma ch). The e is also a egula ion ha s a es
mo emen o he ishing e o when so -shelled c abs exceed 20% o he ca ch, howe e he
e m “mo emen ” is no speci ic and his is no moni o ed. F om 2005 o 2007, he o sho e
c ab ishe y was closed in he managemen a eas Manii soq-Kangaamiu and om 2005 o
Augus 2007 in he o sho e a ea o Sisimiu excep o dispensa ion o 1 essel ha was al-
lowed o ish in 2005. In 2006, he ishe y was closed o 2½ mon hs (July 1 o Sep embe
15) in all a eas excep Uumannaq-Disko Bay (closed only 1 mon h om July 1 – Augus 3)
o p o ec so -shelled c abs.
The G eenland Ins i u e o Na u al Resou ces (GINR) gi es s ock assessmen and manage-

ially independen .
Comme cial ishe y da a
Logbooks om he la ge essels >75 GRT ha e been manda o y since 1999 in conjunc ion
wi h he s a o o sho e ishing wi h essels o his size. Logbooks o he small essels
(<75 GRT) we e i s manda o y om July 2002, and hus i s co e ed he annual ishe y in
2003. Only landing s a is ics a e a ailable om boa s less han 10 me e s as hey a e no e-
qui ed o epo ca ches in logbooks.

Ca ch, E o and CPUE
The his o ical de elopmen o he c ab ishe y in G eenland is shown in Figu e 2. The o e all
annual ca ch is based on landings because ca ch s a is ics om logbooks o bo h small and
la ge essels ha e only been a ailable since 2003 and a e no always comple e. Landings in-
c eased om app ox. 1,000 ons (no TAC) in 1995 o a peak o app ox. 15,000 ons (TAC
26,800 ons) in 2001 (based on landings om small essels and ca ch om logbook da a
om la ge essels >75 GRT). F om 2001 o 2006 he o al ca ch has dec eased by app ox.
77% o 3,305 ons (TAC 5,700 ons) despi e he quo a was no being eached (Fig. 2).
The dis ibu ion o he landings in each managemen a ea in Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, show ha a-
di ionally, mos o he landings ha e p edomina ely come om he a eas Disko Bay-
Uummannaq, Sisimiu and Nuuk-Paamiu . Comme cial CPUE is de i ed om ca ch and e -
o da a om logbooks.
The o al ishing e o ( ap hauls) has declined by 81% since 2001 ( om 3,416 o 665 hou-
sand ap hauls du ing 2001-2006) (Fig. 5). The decline has been mos ly due o a declining
numbe o pa icipan s in he ishe y. P elimina y and incomple e logbook da a o 2007
shows o al e o is 240 housand ap hauls.The a io o o al landings o logbooks landing
a ies be ween managemen a eas. The o e all dis ibu ion o he ishe y along he Wes
coas o G eenland om 2003-2007, de i ed om a ailable logbook da a is shown in Figu e
4.
The numbe o essels wi h licenses o pa icipa e in he snow c ab ishe y inc eased by mo e
han a ac o o 3 om app ox. 120 o 374 boa s om 1999-2002. Since hen he numbe o
bo h la ge and small essels ha e dec eased subs an ially as he abundance o he esou ce
has also declined. F om 2004 o 2007 he numbe o ac i e license holde s in all managemen
a eas dec eased by 55%. The educ ion was 60% in insho e Disko Bay (I-DIS) and 57% in
he o sho e a ea o Nuuk-Paamiu (O-NUP) (Table 2)).

Since 1997, ap su eys ha e been conduc ed annually in insho e a eas o Disko Bay and
Sisimiu . In 2000, a Sisimiu o sho e a ea (Hols einsbo g Dyb) was included in he Sisimiu
ap su ey. In 2002, annual o sho e ap su eys we e ini ia ed in a eas be ween Nuuk and
Paamiu and in 2003 we e ex ended no h o include he o sho e in he Manii soq-
Kangaamiu managemen a ea.

Snow c abs a e sampled wi h Japanese-s yle conical aps wi h la ge (70 mm) and small (21
mm) mesh sizes. Sampling s a ions a e a p ede e mined ixed posi ions o all yea s and soak

Fo males, he ca apace wid h (CW) and chela heigh (CH) a e measu ed (± 0.01 mm) o de-
e mine size and mol s a us (adolescen o adul ). Male snow c abs s op g owing a e hei

Males each legal size ( 100 mm CW) a abou 9 yea s o age. The ange o ca apace wid hs
de ining he adolescen male g oups which a e p esumably 1, 2 and 3 yea s om ec ui men
o legal size a e: ADO-1, 82.2-100mm CW; ADO-2, 67.3-82.2mm CW and ADO-3, 53.2-
67.3mm CW.
Fo emales, he CW and abdomen wid h (AW) a e measu ed (± 0.01mm) o de e mine size
and ma u i y. Females ha ha e ma ed once and a e ca ying hei i s clu ch o eggs a e
called p imipa ous, while emales ha a e ca ying hei second clu ch and ha e ma ed mo e
han once a e called mul ipa ous. They a e dis inguishable by he numbe o sca s on hei
legs caused by ma ing and by shell condi ions. Shell condi ion in bo h males and emales is
de e mined on a scale o 1-5 acco ding o guidelines by Sain e-Ma ie (1993).

Insho e su eys in Disko Bay and Sisimiu
In Disko Bay, 43 s a ions a e sampled annually (Fig. 6a) and in Sisimiu , 40 s a ions a e sam-
pled (Fig. 6b), om May o June. The sampling gea consis s o a longline o 10 la ge-mesh
(70mm) and 2 small-mesh (21mm) conical aps ished a dep hs anging om 100-600m.

O sho e su eys in Sisimiu , Manii soq and Nuuk-Paamiu
Fi een s a ions a e sampled annually in Sisimiu o sho e (Fig. 6b) in June and a o al o 30-
60 s a ions a e sampled in he Nuuk-Paamiu and Manii soq o sho e a eas in Augus -
Sep embe (Fig. 6c). The sampling me hod in Sisimiu o sho e is he same as he me hod
used insho e in Disko Bay and Sisimiu . In 2002, he sampling in he Nuuk-Paamiu o sho e
su ey was also he same as he me hod insho e. In 2003, howe e , he o sho e sampling
me hod used in Nuuk-Paamiu and Manii soq was changed such ha each s a ion was hen
sampled using a longline o 16 aps, eigh la ge-meshed (70 mm) aps al e na ing wi h
eigh small-meshed (21mm) aps a app ox. 40 m in e als and bai ed wi h squid.

Uummannaq-Disko Bay
The his o ical ca ch, CPUE and e o da a o he ishe y in Uummannaq-Disko Bay in he
insho e and o sho e a eas a e summa ized in Table 3. Da a o 2007 a e p elimina y.
One o he mos impo an ishing a eas has been Disko Bay whe e ca ches a e p edomina ely
om he insho e. To al ca ches peaked a 4,202 ons (94% insho e) in 2001 and since hen
ha e s eadily declined o 1,134 ons (88% insho e) in 2006, app oxima ely 27% o he 2001
ca ch.
Insho e - Disko Bay
Fishe y
F om 2000-2001 ca ches insho e inc eased om 2,940-3,950 ons as e o mo e han dou-
bled (613-1274 housand ap hauls, Table 3). CPUE, howe e , dec eased om 4.8 o 3.1
(da a de i ed om a ailable logbook da a). Ca ches and e o ha e s eadily dec eased since
2001 by app oxima ely 74% o 1,008 ons and 219 housand ap hauls, espec i ely, in 2006.
CPUE emained low, be ween 3.1-3.7 kg/ ap du ing 2001-2004, be o e inc easing o 4.6
kg/ ap in 2006. P elimina y da a o 2007 ep esen ing app ox. 23% o he allowable quo a
indica e CPUE in Disko Bay is 4.0 kg/ ap (Table 3). The a io o o al landings o o al ca ch
ob ain by logbooks is 1:1.
The dis ibu ion o he ishe y in Disko Bay om 2003 o 2007, acco ding o a ailable log-
book da a is shown in Figu e. 7. In 2003, he ishing e o was dis ibu ed all along he eas -
e n pa o Disko Bay om he no he n Vaiga a ea o he sou he n pa o Disko Island, as
well as he sou he n pa o Disko Bay. In 2004, much o he ishing e o shi ed om
no heas Disco Bay o a ea 2 o he sou heas coas o Disko Island. The e was, howe e ,
s ill some e o in Vaiga and in he mos -sou he n pa o he Bay. The dis ibu ion o he
ishe y in 2005 indica ed ha e o was p ima ily in he sou heas e n a ea o Disko Island
wi h he ishe y also con inuing in Vaiga and in he sou he n-mos pa o Disko Bay. The
geog aphic dis ibu ion o he ishe y in 2006 was simila o ha in 2005, excep o educed
e o in Vaiga .
The ishe y in Disko Bay ypically s a s in Ap il, peaks du ing he summe mon hs (June-
July) and s eadily declines owa ds he end o he yea , excep in 2006 when he ishe y
peaked in Sep embe , mainly due o a closu e du ing July and Augus . Mon hly ends in he
ishe y CPUE in 2006 we e s able om Sep embe o Decembe a app ox. 5 kg / ap,
whe eas he CPUE s aidly dec eased a he end o he yea in he p e ious yea s (Fig. 8).
Ea ly season ca ch a es (Ma -May gene ally dec eased o e ome (2004-2007), pe haps be-
cause ea ly season ocused on adi ional a eas. La e season CPUE inc eased om 2004-200,
e lec ing alloca ion o e o o new a eas as he season p og essed. Da a om logbooks sug-
ges ing ha he e has been no ecou se eco e y since 2004, bu a he he ishe y is p og es-
si ely ha es ing all a ailable c abs.

Resea ch Su eys
Insho e (A eas 1 and 2)
T ap su eys ha e been conduc ed in 2 insho e a eas o Disko Bay since 1997 (See Fig. 6a
o maps). CPUE o legal-size males ( 100mm CW) in A ea 1 and A ea 2 peaked in 2001
and 2000 espec i ely and ha e declined s eadily by mo e han 50% o 2004; om 4.2-1.7
kg/ ap in A ea 1 and 7.5-2.3 kg/ ap in A ea 2 (Fig. 9). The 2004 CPUE was he lowes ob-
se ed in he ime se ies. In 2005 and 2006 CPUE in A ea 1 was s ill conside ably below he
e e ence mean o 3.7, bu inc eased o 4 kg/ ap, ma ginally abo e he e e ence mean, in
2007. In A ea 2, CPUE inc eased om 2.3 o 6.4 kg/ ap and has eached he e e ence mean
in 2006. In 2007 A ea 2 CPUE dec eased o 4.4 kg/ ap. Re e ence means a e based on he
a e age kg/ ap om 1999-2002.
The mean ca apace wid h (CW) o legal-size males had con inually declined in bo h su ey
a eas o a minimum in 2004 (Fig. 10). CW subsequen ly inc eased in bo h a eas in 2005 and
emaining unchanged in A ea 1 o 2007 while he mean CW has inc eased o e he pas 3
yea s in A ea 2.
The abundance o adolescen males (ADO-1), measu ed as numbe pe ap (NPUE), peaked
a 2.2/ ap in A ea 1 in 2001, and 2.6/ ap in A ea 2 in 2002 (Fig. 11). The NPUE o ADO-1
has since declined sha ply in bo h a eas and was a he lowes le els obse ed o he ime
se ies in 2004 in A ea 1. In 2006, he NPUE o ADO-1 males in A ea 1 was 0.8/ ap and in-
c eased in 2007 o 1.8/ ap 2007, abo e he e e ence mean. NPUE o ADO-1 in A ea 2 de-
c eased om 1.7/ ap in 2005 o 1/ ap, he lowes le els obse ed in he ime se ies. The
NPUE o ADO-1 in A ea 2 emains below he e e ence means o he ime se ies.
Annual ends in size dis ibu ion o adolescen and adul males 100mm CW a e shown in
Fig. 12. In A ea 1 he e was no u he p og ession h ough he size ange un il 2006.Da a
om 2007 implies a ecen inc ease in ec ui men caused by inc easing ec ui men o small
legal-sized new-shelled since 2005. In A ea 2 he ec ui men pulse in 2005, esul ed in in-
c easing CPUE and mean CW as legal-sided adolescen p e- ec ui s mol ed and he „ ec ui -
men pulse‟ p og essed h ough he size ange. The dec ease in ADO-1 males in 2006
showed up clea ly as a educ ion o adul males in he size ange om 100mm o 130mm
CW.
Inc easing p opo ion o legal-size so and new-shelled males (shell condi ion 1 and 2) ha e
been obse ed om 2001-2007 (Fig. 13) and ha e peaked a a ound 70% in 2006 in bo h
A ea 1 and A ea 2. The con inuously high p opo ion o so and new-shelled males sugges s
a con inuous emo al o he olde shelled males by he ishe y, which is becoming inc eas-
ingly dependen upon ec ui men .
The a io o p imipa ous and mul ipa ous emales, used o suppo ends in ec ui men , de-
c eased sha ply in A ea 1 om 2000 o 2003, emained low in 2004 and has inc eased un il
2006 and dec eased again om 2006 o 2007 (Fig. 14). The inc ease in A ea 1 in 2005 and
2006 could ei he e lec he loss o a la ge g oup o ma u e emales om he popula ion o
ha a ec ui men wa e could be o hcoming. In 2007 a mino dec ease has been obse ed
bu is a he 2005 le el. In A ea 2 he a io o p imipa ous and mul ipa ous emale has e-

mained cons an a a le el o 0.45 om 2004 o 2006, bu dec eased o 0.26 in 2007, sugges -
ing a dec easing ec ui men o ma u e emales o he s ock.
Ou look - Disko Bay Insho e
A ailable ishe y and su ey da a indica e ha he c ab esou ce in Disko Bay has been de-
clining o e he pe iod om 2000 o 2004 despi e a dec ease in o al ca ch and e o by ap-
p oxima ely 50% since 2001. The comme cial ca ch a es emain low and a p esen a e
a ound 3- 4.0 kg/ ap. Su ey CPUE in A ea 1 has inc eased since 2004, and he CPUE was
a he lowes obse ed le el a 1.2 kg/ ap in 2004 and inc eased o 4 kg/ ap in 2007. Re-
c ui men has inc eased since 2004 in A ea 1 and bo h CPUE and ec ui men a e in 2007 a
he mean e e ence poin o he ime se ies. Su ey CPUE in A ea 2 dec eased om 6.4
kg/ ap in 2006 o 4.4 in 2007 and is now below e e ence means o he ime se ies. Cau ion
mus be aken, because ec ui men o ADO-1 has dec eased o his o ically low le els once
again. This sugges s ha he e is only limi ed imp o emen in he esou ce as a whole and
ec ui men p ospec s in he coming yea s a e conside ed poo . Comme cial CPUE a he p e-
sen le el o ec ui men indica e ha he e has been no inc ease in c ab biomass despi e de-
clining ishe y emo als especially in he a ea co e ing he sou he n sho e o Disko Island
(su ey a ea 2). Rec ui men indices o a long- e m p ognosis a e unce ain. The pe cen ages
o new shelled adul (60-70 %) and adolescen (75-90 %) males in bo h su ey a eas indica e
ha he ishe y in Disko Bay is being sus ained by new ec ui s.
Recommenda ions o he 2008 ihe y - Disko Bay Insho e
Su ey da a om 2007 indica e he esou ce has s abilised a a low le el despi e he im-

CW in 2003 o app ox. 113mm in 2005 (Fig. 33). In 2006 he a e age CW was sligh ly
highe p ima ily due o an inc ease in CW in he no he n a ea (God håbsdyb), whe eas he
a e age CW o legal-size males in he sou he n sub-a eas Fiskenæs-Danasdyb and F ede ik-

ended beyond he legal-size ( 100mm CW) and become b oade since 2002 and 2003 (Fig.

F ede ikshåb-Ra nsdyb whe e a mode a 85mm has ully ec ui ed by 2006. Howe e , some
luc ua ion in he size modes be ween yea s indica e ha he e may be some a ia ion in he

scale. The pe cen age o new-shelled adul c abs dec eased conside ably in 2006 (62%
SC1+2) in compa ison o 2005 when new shelled adul males exceeding 100mm CW com-
p ised 80% (Fig. 36). This was obse ed in all sub-a eas and oge he wi h he high CPUE is
likely a esul o a ec ui men pulse eaching maximum size as old-shelled adul s p edomi-
nan ly in 2 o he 3 sub-a eas. The a io o p imipa ous:mul ipa ous emales o e all and in all
sub-a eas o Nuuk-Paamiu (Fig. 37), sugges s ha ec ui men will decline in he u u e.
