solu ions in he modelling simula ion en i onmen – B: SIMULATE SOLUTIONS – o go back o assess how hese

u he esea ch and policy ac ions – D: FORMULATE RESEARCH & POLICY AGENDAS. To help shaping such speci ic
dialogues, DIAMOND iden i ies a lis o mac o-ques ions o igge each s age o he dialogue loop. Six speci ic
dialogues wi h esea che s and s akeholde s will ake place wi hin he co-design p ocess (i.e., ci cula economy
and clima e change mi iga ion; land use and na u e-based solu ions; household he e ogenei y and dis ibu ional
impac s; e ining clima e mi iga ion s a egies assessmen ; in eg a ing inance, labou dynamics and no el
ope a ionaliza ion o well-being; and imp o ing he elec ici y sys em assessmen ). One addi ional e hical
o esigh dialogue will be o ganised wi h a ep esen a i e g oup o ci izens, ocusing on beha iou al change and
e hical issues o clima e change neu aliza ion.
In his epo , he co-design p ocess will be de eloped h ough a pa h iden i ied by h ee, closely connec ed and
sequen ial, phases: i s a s wi h he de ini ion o a common knowledge base and he common unde s anding o
he con en , goals, and limi a ions o he IAMs in he DIAMOND p ojec , and con inues wi h he co-de elopmen
o ools and knowledge, and ends wi h he join alida ion and quali y assessmen o modelling imp o emen s.

on he in eg a ion and u ilisa ion o upda ed IAMs wi hin clima e policy and decision-making p ocesses.
Applying ansdisciplina y me hods, he p ojec aspi es o co-c ea e he esea ch ques ions, legi imise he
implemen a ion p ocess and model de elopmen , and imp o e he communica ion, usabili y, up ake, and
ele ance o modelling esul s o he wide socie y.
To his end, he en i e wo k s uc u e o DIAMOND is ope a ionalised wi h he help o a heu is ic c oss-disciplina y
in eg a ion me hodology o model co-de elopmen , applica ion o scena io building and policy oadmaps’ co-
c ea ion exe cises. Recognizing ha knowledge lows h ough a ious communi ies wi h di e se disciplina y
pe spec i es and s akeholde s, his mechanism ensu es a balanced low o in o ma ion ha is bo h ele an o
policy needs and unbiased, p o iding comp ehensi e ye easily unde s andable in o ma ion o all esea che s,
policymake s, and s akeholde s in ol ed.
In connec ion wi h he ansdisciplina y app oach ha DIAMOND adop s, es ablishing meaning ul linkages
be ween science, policy, and socie y p esen s signi ican challenges. Speci ically, engaging s akeholde s in a
meaning ul way in ol es iden i ying he app op ia e s akeholde s and building us . Deli e ing impac ul
ou comes o decision-make s is simila ly challenging and is in e wined wi h echnical model challenges. Poli ical
ac o s, such as compe ing agendas and a lack o ans o ma i e commi men om s akeholde s, also in luence

pa o and ha ou u u e depends upon. Wha a egene a i e economy would sus ain is he unde lying pa e n
o plane a y and human heal h, esilience and adap abili y ha main ain his plane in a condi ion whe e li e
sa is ac ion and human well-being can lou ish.
The bes -known example o egene a i e economy is in he ag icul u e sec o , whe e i is now echnologically
possible and economically compe i i e o p oduce ood while simul aneously li ing he plo o land be e o .
Bu egene a ion can wo k ac oss all de elopmen sec o s – no jus ag icul u e – going beyond sus ainabili y.
The ques ion in sus ainable de elopmen was “How can he economy wo k in such a way ha we sus ain o do
no hu he unde lying (ecological and social) suppo sys ems?” Now, he ques ion in egene a i e de elopmen
becomes “How can he economy wo k in such a way ha we imp o e he capaci y o he unde lying suppo
sys ems?”. I is no longe enough o do no ha m, sus ainabili y and ze o-was e and ze o-emissions policies a e
noble goals, bu we can and mus do be e han ze o, we need o do good – his is he key message o
egene a i e economy.
Gi en he wide ‘di e si y’ o scien i ic disciplines and s akeholde s’ knowledge in ol ed in he c oss-disciplina y
p ocess, he DIAMOND dialogue loops will aim o ma ch he scien i ic knowledge embodied in he IAM models
wi h he alues, mind-se s and pe spec i es o use s/s akeholde s. This “ma ching” is achie ed by imme sing he
holde s o di e en kinds o knowledge – scien i ic and expe imen al – in he dialogue se ing ep esen ed in
Figu e 3 below as syne gic sense making space. This concep ual ep esen a ion o he DIAMOND dialogue se ing

echnique (Vi apongse e al., 2020) is used o ex ensi ely discuss he exis ing si ua ion and each o he oo causes
o p oblems wi h cu en IAMs as well as de ine esea ch ques ions om he pe spec i e o di e en ields o
knowledge (p ojec pa ne s) and p ac ice (s akeholde s). Mo eo e , mul i-s akeholde discussion g oups (F y,
2021) a e employed o ensu e ha ou p ojec asks ele an esea ch ques ions om he poin o iew o socie al
