Onoma opoeia, o sound-imi a i e wo ds, play an impo an ole in many
languages by connec ing human audi o y pe cep ion o linguis ic exp ession. In
Chinese, a language pa icula ly ich in phonological symbolism, onoma opoeic wo ds

cons i uen s. Building on Mode n Chinese G amma and suppo ed by p ac ical
examples, his s udy examines he a ious syn ac ic posi ions ha onoma opoeic wo ds
can assume.
1. Onoma opoeia as Ad e bial and P edica e Modi ie . One o he mos common
unc ions o onoma opoeia in Chinese is i s use as an ad e bial ha modi ies he
p edica e e b. In his ole, he pa icle 地 is o en used o connec he onoma opoeia
o he p edica e, hough in colloquial con ex s his pa icle may be omi ed.
桌上的闹钟的嗒的嗒地在静夜里清脆地响着。 (The ala m clock on he able
ang clea ly in he quie nigh , wi h he sound desc ibed by he onoma opoeia.)
抢叭了一声 这抢是朝天放的,为了吓跑围过来的狗熊。 (A sudden gunsho

In such examples, he sound does no simply accompany he e b bu becomes an
essen ial elemen o how he ac ion is pe cei ed and in e p e ed.
2. Onoma opoeia as A ibu e. Onoma opoeia also appea s in a ibu i e
cons uc ions, whe e i modi ies nouns. In such cases, he pa icle 的 is ypically
employed o link he onoma opoeia o he noun, adding i idness o he desc ip ion.

4. Onoma opoeia as Complemen . Onoma opoeic exp essions o en se e as
complemen s, especially in esul a i e cons uc ions. In hese cases, hey usually
appea wi h he pa icle 的, emphasizing he senso y esul o an ac ion.
火车从这里经过的时候,窗户都被震得哗啦哗啦的。 (When he ain passed
