ABSTRACT
Cul u al con ex played a signi ican ole in shaping esea ch me hodologies. This s udy desc ibed and examined
eache s’ pe cep ions on he key ac o s in luencing esea ch me hod selec ion. I employed a desc ip i e
co ela ional esea ch design. I was pa icipa e by 200 andomly selec ed public seconda y school eache s in
he Philippines. Resul s showed ha cul u al alues and belie s we e highly pe cei ed by eache s as he mos
signi ican elemen in luencing esea ch me hods selec ion ollowed by communica ion s yle and access o
esou ces. On he o he hand, eache s equen ly encoun e ed ha cul u al misunde s anding, access o
pa icipan s and language ba ie s we e signi ican challenges encoun e ed su ounding cul u al con ex in
esea ch me hodologies selec ion. Appa en ly, he e was a posi i e co ela ion be ween cul u al con ex s in
e ms o cul u al alues and belie s in selec ing esea ch me hodologies and he challenges encoun e ed by
eache s in e ms o cul u al misunde s anding which sugges ed while aligning me hodologies wi h cul u al

INTRODUCTION
In he conduc o educa ional esea ches in he Philippines is one o he c i ical aspec in schola ly w i ing. The
Philippine as a na ion holds di e se cul u e exhibi ing p ecolonial cul u e o colonial cul u e. Aside om his,
he Philippines also possess di e se people who cha ac e ize di e en pe cep ions, beha io and alues. Along
his di e ences, s ill Filipinos om sec o s o socie y one sha ed cul u e which is he co e iden i y o he
Filipinos— esilien and compassiona e. On one hand, he conduc o schola ly w i ings such as academic
esea ches commonly ocused on di e se disciplines whe e esea che s op ed o selec di e en g oups o
esponden s in a single esea ch s udy. In iew o cul u e, Filipinos om di e en disciplines ha e di e se

objec i e bu ailing o logically examine i he e a e p e ailing cul u al p ac ices and no ms o be conside ed
when o mula ing such designed esea ch opics. So hese condi ions igni ed he esea che s’ in e es o
comp ehensi ely assess he in luence o cul u al con ex on esea ch me hod selec ion.
The e is a me hodological gap ha can be illed by quali a i e app oach in c oss-cul u al esea ch as well as in
conside a ion in selec ing cul u e-based esea ch me hods. Means-end me hodology o e signi ican s eng hs
and add essing se e al le els o weaknesses o he cul u e-based esea ch me hod selec ion (Wa kins, 2010).
C oss-cul u al esea ch equi es a keen eye o igo ous me hodology in such esea ch. App ecia ion ha
me hodological aspec s o such s udies unde sco e he impo ance o acknowledging and ecognizing he
p e ailing cul u e. A ca e ul design and analysis can help build a s ong cul u al conside a ion in conduc ing
esea ch wo ks (He & Vij e , 2017). In addi ion, psychological and educa ional assessmen s a e conside ed o
educing bias speci ically by assessing cul u al a iables and h ea s o he alidi y o esea ch me hods as
aligned wi h he p e ailing cul u al con ex s o he esea ch’s pa icipan s (Ramlackhan, 2023). The e a e
c i ical aspec s in add essing scien i ically cul u e-based esea ch me hods selec ions which included he abili y
o ha ness cul u e-cen e ed knowledge and pe spec i es om communi ies, u iliza ion o indigenous-based
heo ies and cul u al adap a ion mechanisms (Dicke son e al., 2018). Focusing on he cul u al con ex , i
enabled he esea che s o unde s and and amilia ize wi h hei pa icipan s’ mindse , pe cep ions and
beha io s. Cul u al con ex commonly shapes a esea ch encoun e he eby, a ec ing he alidi y and accu acy
o esea ch indings (Bayeck, 2021). In his line, he esea che s es ablish a s ong knowledge gap based on he
ci ed p e ious s udies since hese s udies only ocused on he cul u e-based conside a ions o he di e en
coun ies, he e a e less numbe o esea ches published wi h ega d o assessing he in luence o cul u al
con ex in esea ch me hods selec ion in he Philippines. So, his p esen s udy ills his gap. Appa en ly,
signi icance o he s udy lies in he p o ision o scien i ic e idence based on he eache s pe cep ions on he
in luence o cul u al con ex in esea ch me hods selec ions among esea ches locally adminis e ed in he
Philippines. In addi ion, his s udy suppo s SDG 4 (Quali y Educa ion) since he s udy may p o ide logical
baseline and da a abou he pe cep ions o eache s on he in luence o cul u al con ex in selec ing esea ch
me hods. As such, he da a and he scien i ic analyses con ained in his pape may be used o he o mula ion o
modi ica ion o ins i u ional esea ch s anda ds o basic and highe educa ion ins i u ions o yield a mo e
comp ehensi e and cul u e-based esea ch.
OBJECTIVES
This s udy assessed he in luence o cul u al con ex on esea ch me hod selec ion based on he pe cep ions o
public seconda y schools in he Philippines. I speci ically answe ed he ollowing:
1. How may eache s’ pe cep ions on he cul u al elemen s in luencing esea ch me hods selec ion be
assessed in e ms o :
1.1 alues and belie s;
1.2 communica ion and s yles; and
1.3 access o esou ces?
2. Wha a e he challenges encoun e ed by he eache s in using cul u al con ex in esea ch me hods
selec ion in e ms o :
2.1 unde s anding cul u e;
2.2 access o pa icipan s; and
2.3 linguis ic aspec ?

Hypo hesis:
The s udy hypo hesized ha he e is no signi ican ela ionship be ween he cul u al con ex s in luencing
eache s’ esea ch me hods selec ion and he challenges hey encoun e ed.
METHODOLOGY
The s udy employed a desc ip i e co ela ional esea ch design in o de o assess he in luence o cul u al
con ex on esea ch me hod selec ion. Thus, he esea che s used a simple andom sampling o selec he
pa icipa ion o 200 public seconda y school eache s among he selec ed schools in he Philippines. On he
o he hand, esea che s used a esea che -made su ey-ques ionnai e which was subjec ed o alida ion and
eliabili y es ing h ough pilo es . Fo he cons uc ion o he su ey-ques ionnai e, pa 1 o he ins umen
con ained i ems ela ing o he eache s’ pe cep ions on he cul u al elemen s in luencing esea ch me hods
selec ion while pa 2 con ained i ems ela ing o he challenges encoun e ed by eache s in using cul u al
con ex in esea ch me hods selec ion. On one hand, alida ion was made h ough he expe ise o h ee (3)
p o essionals holding a doc o a e deg ee in educa ional managemen and supe ision. Then, he esea che s
complied wi h he ecommenda ions o enhance o modi y he de eloped ins umen , he esea che s p oceeded
o pilo es ing whe e hey conduc ed i among non-included esponden s. Resul s o he eliabili y es showed
ha i ems unde pa 1, ob ained a C onbach Alpha esul o .712 while i ems unde pa 2, gained a C onbach
Alpha esul o .872, bo h desc ibed as “accep able.” Fu he , he esea che s used google o ms in adminis e ing
hei su ey-ques ionnai e. They we e able o send he link o he esponden s’ pe sonal email add esses. Once
all he da a ha e been collec ed, he esea che s o ganized he ga he ed aw da a using MS Excel. As o he da a
analysis, he esea che s used mean, s anda d de ia ion and gene al weigh ed mean in o de o examine
eache s’ pe cep ions on he cul u al elemen s in luencing esea ch me hods selec ion and he challenges
encoun e ed by he esponden s in using cul u al con ex o esea ch me hods selec ion. Also, he esea che s
used Pea son Co ela ion Coe icien ( ) in o de o examine i he e would be signi ican ela ionship be ween
he cul u al con ex s in luencing eache s’ esea ch me hods selec ion and he challenges hey encoun e ed. And,
in o med consen and sho b ie ing we e used as e hical p o ocols be o e he ac ual adminis a ion o he s udy.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Assessing he in luence o cul u al con ex on esea ch me hod selec ion is o signi ican alue in he sphe es o
esea ch and de elopmen . In he Philippines, a na ion endowed wi h ich apes y o cul u al adi ions and
alues se e as mic ocosms o he di e si y which is commonly subjec o se ious conside a ions.
Unde s anding also he in e play o cul u al ac o s and esea ch me hods selec ion, pose c i ical con ibu ions in
he esea ch as a discipline on he basis ha i could p o ide accu a e insigh s and meaning ul indings de i ed
om accu a e da a sou ces and highly aligned me hods.
1. Pe cep ions on he Cul u al Elemen s In luencing Resea ch Me hods Selec ion. The esul s
showed ha alues and belie s ob ained he highes mean sco e o 3.81, desc ibed as highly pe cei ed
while communica ion and s yles gained a closely ela i e mean sco e o 3.79, desc ibed as highly
pe cei ed. Thus, access o esou ces a iable gained a mean sco e o 3.61, also desc ibed as highly
pe cei ed. The esul s implied ha eache s highly pe cei ed alues and belie s as he mos in luen ial
as cul u al elemen in esea ch me hods selec ion. This implied he impo ance o unde s anding
cul u al con ex which may signi ican ly shape pa icipan s esponses and engagemen . On one hand,
communica ion and s yles a e also highly pe cei ed by he eache s which indica ed ha esea che s
we e op ed o adap hei communica ion s yles o align wi h he p e ailing cul u al no ms o hei
esponden s. Thus, he esul implied ha e ec i e communica ion which included use o local dialec s
and cul u ally app op ia e dialogues could pose us and imp o e da a quali y. Las ly, access o
esou ces a e also iewed as highly pe cei ed cul u al elemen emphasizing i s in luence on esea ch
me hods selec ion indica ing he ecogni ion o signi ican ole in accessing educa ional plays, p ac ices
and he like ha enabled he esea che build p ope and ele an esea ch me hods. Resul s o he

Selec ion. The esul s showed ha unde s anding cul u e gained he highes mean sco e o 3.67,
desc ibed as always encoun e ed while access o pa icipan s gained a mean sco e o 3.51, also
desc ibed as always encoun e ed. Also, he esul s showed ha linguis ic aspec ob ained a mean sco e
o 3.47, desc ibed as always encoun e ed. The esul s implied ha eache s always encoun e ed cul u al
misunde s anding. This also sugges ed ha a deep comp ehension o cul u al nuances was essen ial bu
o en di icul o achie e. Unde s anding cul u e in ol ed he ecogni ion o alues and belie s o a
g oup whe e in he con ex o esea ch selec ion me hod, eache - esea che s equen ly s uggle wi h
his because o a ying le el o cul u al awa eness. On one hand, he esul on access o pa icipan s, i
indica ed ha eache - esea che s we e signi ican ly challenged in he selec ion and pa icipa ion o
hei a ge ed esponden s coming om di e se cul u al backg ounds. In line wi h his, accessing he
pa icipan s speci ically in communi ies whe e cul u e and adi ions. we e alued deeply. Locals
app ecia ion o ou side s like he esea che s who we e conduc ing hei s udies, equen ly encoun e ed
skep icism. Las ly, he esul s signi ied ha eache s always s uggled language ba ie s in which
di icul ies in communi ies wi h he a ge ed esponden s occu ed. This posed signi ican challenge o

selec ion as well as implemen a ion. Resul s o he s udy suppo ed he s udy o Pelzaang and
Hu chinson (2018) which e ealed ha adi ional cul u al alues and cus oms signi ican ly aised
challenge and ba ie o esea che s in selec ing and implemen ing hei esea ch me hod. Simila
s udy also showed ha esea che s we e commonly con on ed wi h in e cul u al pe cep ions making i
di icul o engage cul u ally- oo ed pa icipan s.

The Challenges They Encoun e ed. The esul s showed ha he e was a posi i e co ela ion be ween

This sugges ed ha while aligning me hodologies wi h cul u al alues, i was equally c i ical o add ess
he po en ial misunde s anding occu ed in selec ing p ope esea ch me hodologies. Fu he , he esul s
signi ied ha cul u al alues and belie s o eache - esea che s may simul aneously expe ience g ea e
di icul y in ully unde s anding di e en cul u al nuances. Resul s o he s udy suppo ed he s udy o
