2. CONCEPTS
In o de o w i e abou “Open Science,” a de ini ion is needed. Open science is a
su p isingly di icul e m o de ine p ecisely, and mul iple o e lapping de ini ion
a e commonly e e enced. UNESCO [2022] sees ou componen s o open science :
open scien i ic knowledge (publica ions, da a, code, and eaching ma e ials “openly
a ailable, accessible and eusable o e e yone”), open science in as uc u es
(which encompasses bo h physical in as uc u e such as ins umen s and labo a-

science communica ion (knowledge ansla ion), and b oad engagemen beyond
he bounda ies o he academy. I also ecognizes he limi a ions o such access in

The Open Knowledge Founda ion (Open Knowledge Founda ion [2024], OKF)
de ines “open” as (my emphasis)
... anyone can eely access, use, modi y, and sha e o any pu pose

Less b oadly, Vicen e-Saez e al. [2018] iden i y a consensus ha de ines open

In his a icle, I will ocus on he wha UNESCO 2022 calls open science
