Abs ac
The aim o he p esen s udy was o compa e no a ional echnical--- ac ical analysis o he XXXII Summe
Olympic Games (OG) and 2022 Wo ld Championship (WC) ees yle w es ling compe i ions. A o al o 293
(103 OG and 190 WC) ideos o bou s we e wa ched and analyzed by he Da ish Connec Plus 8.0 ma ch
analysis p og am. Bou analyses we e pe o med acco ding o 1) bou analysis p epa a ion, 2) sea ching and
agging, 3) da abase c ea ion, and 4) da a usage p ocedu es. W es ling echniques we e g ouped in o
akedowns and h ows in s anding posi ion and lips and h ows in pa e e posi ion. Poin s we e
de e mined acco ding o ime and pe iods, s anding and pa e e posi ion, winning ypes, a acks, and
coun e -a acks. The e is a signi ican di e ence be ween a acks and coun e -a acks in WC and OG (p<0.05;
x2 = 31.689). The ypes o ic o ies in WC and OG a e 63.7% and 73.8% by poin , espec i ely. In he i s and
second pe iods, echnical poin s a e de e mined acco ding o w es ling ac ions (WAmean)1.74 and 1.76
( =0.488, Cohen’s d = .031),1.66 and 1.69 ( =0.567, Cohen’s d = .048) in WC and OG, espec i ely. Mos
w es ling echniques a e pe o med in he s anding posi ion (WC 58.8% and OG 68.2%). Leg A ack is he
mos used echnique in he s anding posi ion (WC 17.9% and OG 21.8%). In conclusion, echniques ha
ea n wo poin s, a ack mo emen s, pe o med a he s anding posi ion, such as leg a ack, ake down, and
push o ou , a e impo an in eli e w es ling ma ches.

Öz
Bu çalışmanın amacı, XXXII. Yaz Olimpiya Oyunla ı (OG) ile 2022 Dünya Şampiyonası (WC) se bes gü eş
müsabakala ının no asyonel eknik--- ak ik analizle ini ka şılaş ı mak ı . Toplam 293 (103 OG e 190 WC) gü eş
müsabakasına ai ideo gö ün üsü Da ish Connec Plus 8.0 maç analiz p og amı kullanıla ak izlenmiş e
analiz edilmiş i . Müsabaka analizle i; 1) analiz ön hazı lığı, 2) a ama e e ike leme, 3) e i abanı oluş u ma
e 4) e i kullanımı aşamala ına gö e ge çekleş i ilmiş i . Gü eş eknikle i, ayak a yapılan eknikle (dalma,
i me, ı la ma) ile pa e pozisyonundaki eknikle (çe i mele e ı la mala ) şeklinde g uplandı ılmış ı . Ay ıca
zaman e pe iyo la a gö e puan dağılımla ı, ayak a e pa e pozisyonla ındaki puanla , galibiye ü le i, a ak
e kon a-a akla analiz edilmiş i . OG e WC müsabakala ı a asında a ak e kon a akla bakımından anlamlı
a k bulunmuş u (p<0.05; x² = 31.689). Galibiye ü ü ola ak WC’de %63.7, OG’de ise %73.8 o anında puanla
kazanım gözlemlenmiş i . Teknik puan o alamala ı açısından, bi inci e ikinci pe iyo la da gü eş
aksiyonla ına (WAmean) gö e sı asıyla WC’de 1.74 e 1.66; OG’de 1.76 e 1.69 değe le i espi edilmiş i
( =0.488, Cohen’s d = .031; =0.567, Cohen’s d = .048). Teknikle in büyük çoğunluğu ayak pozisyonunda
uygulanmış ı (WC %58.8, OG %68.2). Ayak pozisyonunda en sık uygulanan eknik ise ayağa dalmala ola ak
gö ülmüş ü (WC %17.9, OG %21.8). Sonuç ola ak, iki puan kazandı an eknikle , ayak pozisyonunda
uygulanan a ak ha eke le i (ayağa dalmala , ayak an indi mele e dışa ı i me gibi) eli düzey gü eş

W es ling is one o he oldes known spo s, wi h o igins acing back o he Sume ians
app oxima ely 5,000 yea s ago. Today, i is p ac iced in a ious o ms ac oss many
egions o he wo ld. As one o he ounda ional spo s o he Ancien Olympic Games,
w es ling was inco po a ed in o he mode n Olympic p og am beginning in 1896, wi h
ees yle w es ling becoming a ecognized discipline. Since 2002, he go e nance o
w es ling has been o e seen by Uni ed Wo ld W es ling (UWW) (Ga cía-Palla és e al.,
2011; Uni ed Wo ld W es ling [UWW], 2023).
The de elopmen o app op ia e and op imized aining me hodologies is
undamen al o achie ing success in w es ling (Chaabene e al., 2017; Yoon, 2002). A
w es le 's pe o mance in compe i ion is la gely in luenced by hei le el o echnical and
ac ical p o iciency (T opin, 2013). The e o e, analyzing ma ches a he eli e le el is
essen ial o he e olu ion o bo h aining p ac ices and echnical– ac ical inno a ions.
The coaching p ocess is inhe en ly aimed a enhancing a hle ic pe o mance by
deli e ing e ec i e eedback o a hle es and eams (James, 2009). Howe e , in comba
spo s such as w es ling, whe e he dynamics o he ma ch in ol e di ec physical
engagemen , i is exceedingly challenging (e en o expe ienced coaches) o obse e,
ecall, and in e p e all c i ical momen s o a ma ch o aining session accu a ely. This
limi a ion applies equally o a hle es, whose pe cep ion o pe o mance e en s may be
in luenced by cogni i e biases o limi ed isual in o ma ion (Fa well, 2013; Cip ano,
1993; Podli ae , 2010; Shakhmu ado , 2011).
Acco ding o Tünnemann (1996), op imizing he e ec i eness o aining is a cen al
objec i e in imp o ing pe o mance in comba spo s. A c i ical componen o his
p ocess in ol es se ing clea pe o mance a ge s, p edic ing ou comes, and conduc ing
sys ema ic pe o mance analysis. Pe o mance Analysis (PA) e e s o he applica ion o
s uc u ed me hods o measu e and e alua e a hle ic pe o mance. Typically conduc ed
h ough ideo-based sys ems (bo h manual and compu e ized) PA encompasses he
echnical– ac ical and biomechanical examina ion o a hle e beha io du ing and a e
aining o compe i ion (James, 2009). The goal o PA is o es ablish a eliable and alid
eco d o pe o mance h ough objec i e obse a ion, he eby acili a ing meaning ul
eedback. Well-designed pe o mance indica o s o e p ac ical insigh s by highligh ing
s eng hs and weaknesses in echnique o s a egic execu ion, suppo ing compa a i e
assessmen s be ween a hle es o eams (Hughes & F anks, 2007; McGa y e al., 2013).
Nume ous s udies ha e in es iga ed echnical– ac ical aspec s o w es ling ac oss
di e en ou namen s and championships (A abaci e al., 2018; A an & İmamoğlu, 2005;
Kajmo ic e al., 2014; López-González, 2013; López-González, 2014; Mia ka, 2016;
Shakhmu ado , 2011; Tünnemann, 2016). Howe e , due o he equen e isions in

Sample
F ees yle w es ling compe i ions om he XXXII Olympic Games (OG), held in Tokyo
in 2021, and he 2022 Wo ld W es ling Championships (WC), held in Belg ade, we e
analyzed using he Da ish Connec Plus 8.0 ma ch analysis so wa e. The no a ional
echnical– ac ical analysis o he bou s was conduc ed by he i s and second au ho s,
bo h o whom ha e o e en yea s o expe ience as w es le s and ce i ied w es ling
coaches.
The analysis included ma ches om weigh ca ego ies common o bo h
ou namen s: 57 kg, 65 kg, 74 kg, 86 kg, 97 kg, and 125 kg. Weigh ca ego ies con es ed
only a he WC—61 kg, 70 kg, 79 kg, and 92 kg—we e excluded om he analysis, as hey
a e no pa o he Olympic compe i ion p og am. This s udy was suppo ed by he
Scien i ic Resea ch P ojec s Uni o Bu sa Uludağ Uni e si y (P ojec Numbe : SGA-
2021-356, Da e: 14.04.2021). The da a used in his s udy we e ob ained om he 2021
and 2022 Senio F ees yle Wo ld Championship compe i ion esul s and s a is ics,
which a e publicly a ailable and published on he o icial websi e o Uni ed Wo ld
W es ling. The e o e, e hics commi ee app o al is no equi ed.

ans e ed o SPSS o Windows ( e sion 27.0; IBM Co p., A monk, NY) o s a is ical
analysis. The ollowing es s we e employed depending on he da a s uc u e:
Independen Samples - es , Chi-squa e es , One-way ANOVA, Uni a ia e Analysis o
Va iance. Whe e app op ia e, Bon e oni pos hoc es s we e conduc ed ollowing one-
way ANOVA. E ec sizes o he - es s we e in e p e ed using Cohen’s d: small (0.20),
medium (0.50), and la ge (0.80). E ec sizes o ANOVA and Uni a ia e Analysis o
Va iance we e assessed using Pa ial E a Squa ed (η²ₚ): small (0.10), medium (0.25), and
la ge (0.80). The p- alue o < 0.05 was conside ed s a is ically signi ican .
Resul s
F equencies o a ack and coun e -a ack echniques pe o med by w es le s we e
de e mined o be 649 (78%) and 183 (22%) in WC, 452 (87.9%) and 62 (12.1%) in OG,
espec i ely. The e is a signi ican di e ence be ween a ack and coun e -a acks
equencies in WC and OG (p < 0.05;

(A/CA) o OG (7.3) is highe han WC’s (3.6). Types o ic o ies de e mined in WC and
OG a e %63.7 ( = 121) and %73.8 (76) by poin , 31.1% ( = 59) and 20.4% ( = 80) by
echnical supe io i y, 5.3% ( = 10) and 5.8% ( = 6) by all, espec i ely. In he i s and
second pe iod we e de e mined mean echnical poin s (TPmean) 4.8 and 4.5 and mean
echnical poin s acco ding o w es ling ac ions (WAmean) 1.74 and 1.76 ( = 0.488, Cohen’s
d = .031) in WC and TPmean 4.6 and 4.4 and WAmean 1.66 and 1.69 ( = 0.567, Cohen’s d =
.048) in OG, espec i ely. Pull, ac ion, and push comba equencies a e de e mined as
23 (2.8%), 654 (79.2%), and 149 (18%) in WC, and 10 (1.9%), 436 (84.8%), and 68 (13.2%)
in OG, espec i ely. The e is signi ican di e ence be ween bou comba ype
equencies in WC and OG (p < 0.05, χ2 = 17.732).

= .16). In he wo compe i ions, he mos sco ed poin s a e 2 echnical poin s (72.5% in
WC and 72.8% in OG). The e is a signi ican di e ence be ween he poin s sco ed in
s anding and pa e e posi ion in bo h compe i ions (p < 0.05) wi h a la ge e ec size
(WC Cohen’s d = .633 and OG Cohen’s d = .545). S/P coe icien o OG (2.9) is highe
han WC’s (1.73). Technical poin s sco ed acco ding o bou ime a e p esen ed in Table

Discussion and Conclusion
The objec i e o his s udy was o compa e no a ional echnical– ac ical pa ame e s o
ees yle w es ling ma ches a he XXXII Summe OG and he 2022 WC. We
hypo hesized ha ma ches in he Olympic Games would be mo e dynamic and yield
highe quan i a i e pe o mance me ics compa ed o he Wo ld Championships.
W es ling ma ch cha ac e is ics (e.g. du a ion, sco ing sys ems, and pe iodic ule
changes) can signi ican ly in luence no only he physiological and physical p epa a ion
o a hle es bu also hei echnical and ac ical de elopmen . While nume ous s udies
ha e explo ed ac ical elemen s in w es ling, a lack o consensus and a hea y eliance on
heo e ical amewo ks highligh he need o empi ical da a o guide echnical- ac ical
aining p ac ices. In his ega d, ou indings add ess his gap by o e ing da a-d i en
insigh s.

and push-ou s, while gu w enches domina ed in he pa e e posi ion. The highes mean
echnical poin s ac oss weigh classes we e obse ed in he 65 kg and 74 kg ca ego ies,
whe eas he lowes we e in he 125 kg and 97 kg ca ego ies. These esul s a e in line wi h
ea lie indings by Tünnemann (1998, 2011, 2016), and López-González e al. (2012),
which consis en ly highligh ed he p e alence o leg a acks, akedowns, push-ou s, gu
w enches, and leg laces in high-le el compe i ion. La yshe e al. (2017) epo ed an
a e age o 7.5, 6.0, and 6.2 poin s pe ma ch in he 2016 OG o ligh weigh ,
middleweigh , and hea yweigh ca ego ies, espec i ely. Tünnemann (2011) also ound
an a e age o 7 poin s pe ma ch in he 2007 WC and 2008 OG. In con as , ou s udy

o maximizing a ack e iciency ea ly in he bou and main aining high physical and
physiological eadiness h oughou . Acco dingly, comp ehensi e echnical- ac ical
aining and educa ion, beginning in you h and con inuing h ough o eli e le els, should
be s a egically planned o enhance pe o mance in compe i i e w es ling se ings.
