me hods, we analyze 452 esea ch a icles, un eiling key con ibu o s and pi o al wo ks
in he e ol ing ield o onboa ding and o ganiza ional socializa ion. we ca e ou i e
esea ch a eas ha hold po en ial o u u e esea ch endea o s. By o e ing insigh s
in o he dynamics o success ul o ganiza ional socializa ion, ou wo k holds p o ound
implica ions o cul i a ing welcoming and e icien wo kplaces o manage s and HR
depa men s.
1. In oduc ion
O ganiza ions wo ldwide inc easingly ocus on onboa ding and o ganiza ional socializa ion o mee
g owing challenges, such as lowe ing e en ion a es and inc eased i ualiza ion and digi iza ion
(Ho mann e al., 2022; Sani e al., 2022). a ecen su ey in ol ing 363 ge man HR o ice s and manage s
e ealed ha 86 pe cen ecognized he impe a i e o imp o e hei onboa ding ac i i ies. Mo eo e , a
compelling 88 pe cen belie ed ha ea ly luc ua ion could be mi iga ed by enhanced onboa ding e o s

o mance and u no e in en ion (Baue e al., 2007; Saks e  al., 2007). a he beginning o his cen u y,

2. Onboa ding and o ganiza ional socializa ion backg ound
he ounda ion o he socializa ion ield lies in an Maanen and Schein (1979) seminal wo k, which p o-

(1986) ope a ionalized hese as 5-i em sel - epo scales, which ha e widely been used in s udies in o
socializa ion ac ics (ash o h e  al., 1997). He classi ied he ac ics as ei he ins i u ionalized (collec i e,
o mal, sequen ial, ixed, se ial, in es i u e) o indi idualized (indi idual, in o mal, andom, a iable, dis-

quen ly expe ience socializa ion. consequen ly, p oac i e newcome beha io s ha e become
pa icula ly impo an o success ul socializa ion (coope - homas & Bu ke, 2012; Zhao e  al., 2022).

newcome in o ma ion-seeking has been in es iga ed he mos (Mo ison, 1993; Os o & Kozlowski,

ion seeking and eedback seeking); ela ionship building (gene al socializing, ne wo king, and

e  al., 2023; Saks & g uman, 2018).

2017, 2020).

unc ions in hyb id and i ual wo k en i onmen s (Mazzei e  al., 2022; Russo, 2017; Ya b ough & Ramos
Salaza , 2023).

3. Me hodology
we apply a bibliome ic me hodology ha in ol es using quan i a i e ins umen s o analyze bibliome -
ic and bibliog aphic in o ma ion (g oos & P i cha d, 1969). his me hod has become e y popula la ely
in business esea ch (Budle e  al., 2021; Don hu, Kuma , Pandey, e  al., 2021; Don hu, Kuma , Pa naik,
e al., 2021; goodell e al., 2021; Ken Bake e al., 2020; Kuma e al., 2021; Mukhe jee e al., 2022; Z. Xu
e  al., 2021). Unlike adi ional sys ema ic li e a u e e iews, a bibliome ic e iew allows in o ma ion o
be p o ided on a eas cha ac e ized by la ge amoun s o bibliome ic and bibliog aphic in o ma ion. in
his pape , we ollow he ou -s ep p ocess o Don hu e  al. (2021) o bibliome ic e iews: (1) de ining

3.1. Aims and scope o he analysis
Building on a co-ci a ion analysis in which Ba is ič and Kaše (2015) iden i ied h ee main heo ies o
explain he socializa ion p ocess, namely o ganiza ional educ ion heo y, sense-making and he social
cogni i e heo y, we aim o show he esea ch pa hs ha ha e been de ised e e since. as we show in
he pe o mance analysis, he numbe o publica ions has signi ican ly g own. he e o e, we apply bib-
liog aphic coupling o disco e eme ging publica ion hemes.
3.2. Choosing he echniques o he bibliome ic analysis
a bibliome ic analysis usually consis s o wo ca ego ies: pe o mance analysis and science mapping. a
pe o mance analysis in es iga es he con ibu ions o esea ch cons i uen s, such as au ho s, sou ces,
ins i u ions o coun ies. ypically used measu es a e he numbe o publica ions as a measu e o p o-
duc i i y and o ci a ions as a measu e o in luence and impac (Don hu, Kuma , Mukhe jee, e al., 2021).
we apply a pe o mance analysis o show he de elopmen and ends in o ganiza ional socializa ion and
onboa ding esea ch. addi ionally, he mos p oli ic au ho s, ins i u ions, and coun ies a e ou lined, as
a e he mos published jou nals and he mos ci ed a icles.
Bibliog aphic coupling assumes ha wo publica ions a e ela ed in con en i hey ci e he same li -
e a u e (Kessle , 1963). he numbe o common e e ences de ines he s eng h o he bibliog aphic cou-
pling o he wo publica ions. Unlike co-ci a ion, which ocuses on highly ci ed pape s om he pas ,
bibliog aphic coupling can be used o iden i y clus e s o cu en and u u e esea ch hemes (weinbe g,
1974). his includes pape s wi h ob iously low ci a ion a es ha migh be o he wise o e looked (Don hu,
Kuma , Mukhe jee, e  al., 2021)
3.3. Da a collec ion
we ca ied ou ou esea ch in he cla i a e analy ics web o Science (woS) da abase, which is he mos
widely used one o bibliome ic analyses in he managemen and o ganiza ion ield (Zupic & Ča e ,
2015). we limi ed ou da a collec ion o he Social Sciences ci a ion index (SSci) and Science ci a ion
index expanded (Sci-expanded) o ocus on publica ions o a high scien i ic s anda d. in he sea ch unc-
ion, he keywo ds ‘onboa ding’, ‘o ganiza ional socializa ion’ o ‘employee socializa ion’ needed o be
p esen in he i le, abs ac o keywo ds. o exclude a icles on onboa ding in o he domains, such as
onboa ding cus ome s in he i se ices ield o he onboa ding o clien s in he social wo k domain, we
combined hose keywo ds wi h one o he ollowing e ms: employee, newcome , new hi e.
Rega ding he language o publica ions, in line wi h he bes p ac ices in sys ema ic e iews and gi en
he na u e o ou esea ch, english was chosen as he sea ch language. conce ning he ype o documen s,
only pee - e iewed a icles, e iews and con e ence p oceedings we e selec ed because hey con ain he
mos eliable knowledge. Using hese sea ch c i e ia, we ob ained an ini ial sample o 452 documen s.
4. Findings
he analysis esul s a e p esen ed in wo sec ions. Fi s , we show he indings o he pe o mance anal-
ysis o o e an o e iew o he majo con ibu ions o he esea ch cons i uen s in he ield. Second, we
show he ela ionships be ween esea ch cons i uen s building on science mapping.
4.1. Pe o mance analysis
Pe o mance analysis allows esea che s o de e mine he p oduc i i y (publica ion) and impac (ci a ion)
o he selec ed body o li e a u e (K aus e al., 2022). we used he R so wa e package (a ia & cuccu ullo,

2017) o iden i y he mos impo an pa ame e s o he pe o mance analysis. Figu e 1 shows he
yea -wise publica ions on onboa ding and o ganiza ional socializa ion and, hus, answe s RQ1. Be ween
2011 and 2018, he numbe o publica ions ipled compa ed o he decade be o e, and con inued o
ise o 53 published pape s in 2022.
