P o esso Michałek is Poland’s op expe in
in e na ional ade and ade policy in pa icula . He
has been associa ed wi h he Facul y o Economic
Sciences a he Uni e si y o Wa saw since comple ing
his mas e ’s cou se in Econome ics in 1977. He ea ned
his PhD in 1981 and habili a ion in 1989. E en ually,
he became a ull p o esso in 2003. Addi ionally, he
g adua ed om he College o Eu ope in Belgium and
pa icipa ed in se e al esea ch s ays ab oad, including
he Uni e si y o Be n, he Uni e si y o Ams e dam,
and he Uni e si y o Sussex.
P o esso Michałek has pionee ed he ield o
mode n in e na ional economics in Poland as i
ans o med i s academic sec o a e he democ a ic
e o ms in 1989. He has shaped he academic cu iculum
o eaching in in e na ional economics a he acul y
and is an au ho con ibu ing o he acul y’s success in
he ield. His academic con ibu ions we e in aluable
du ing he p og essing e o ms in he Polish economy:
ade libe aliza ion and he subsequen s ages o Polish
accession o he EU.
His immense knowledge o ade policy has also an
impo an applied dimension: in he 1990s he se ed
as he Depu y Pe manen Rep esen a i e o Poland o
he Wo ld T ade O ganiza ion (WTO) and was he
Vice-Chai man o he Commi ee on Impo Licensing
o he WTO. This unique mix o expe ience enabled
him o be published in enowned academic jou nals,
ob ain nume ous g an s and esea ch p ojec s, p o ide
policy ad ice o nume ous na ional and in e na ional
ins i u ions, and, las bu no leas , in oduce he opic
o in e na ional ade and ade policy, Eu opean
in eg a ion, and he WTO o housands o s uden s.
His publica ions include books and a icles on
ade and ade policy. He is an au ho o a widely used
ex book in his ield and was an edi o o ansla ion
o se e al in e na ional ex books o Polish. Ea ly
esea ch wo ks ocus on he unc ioning o he
wo ld ading amewo k unde he umb ella o he
GATT including he e ec s o U ugway Round, he
unc ioning o he dispu e se lemen mechanisms, and
he Polish accession o he WTO. The empi ical wo ks
om he pe iod o economic ansi ion also include
he s udies on he e ec s o ade libe aliza ion in
Cen al and Eas e n Eu ope and he esul ing changes
in he pa e n o ade, conce ning he eme gence
o in a-indus y ade in pa icula . La e s udies

Lewkowicz (2024) akes on he in e es ing

digi isa ion, clima e change, and he en i onmen as

In Togan’s s udy (2024), he ocus is on how
de eloping coun ies can a ain sa is ac o y ood

hei expo s o high-income coun ies. The au ho
