THEORY
Collec i e Sensemaking
Collec i e sensemaking (Weick, 1988, 1995) ‘in ol es a ending o and b acke ing cues
in he en i onmen , c ea ing in e subjec i e meaning h ough cycles o in e p e a ion
and ac ion, and he eby enac ing a mo e o de ed en i onmen om which u he cues
can be d awn’ (Mai lis and Ch is ianson, 2014, p. 67). Once sense has been made, ac o s
main ain a ep esen a ion o he si ua ion ha is con inually upda ed as new cues p o-
ide new in o ma ion, modi ying ha ep esen a ion only when a new cue subs an ially
challenges he es ablished meaning (Ch is ianson, 2019). Collec i e sensemaking com-
plemen s o he , mo e- s a ic p ecu so s o coo dina ed ac ion, such as p o essional oles,
hie a chical s uc u es, and s anda d ope a ing p ocedu es, and becomes c ucial when
hese app oaches a e insu icien o coo dina ed ac ion (Fa aj and Xiao, 2006; Weick
and Robe s, 1993).
Collec i e sensemaking consis s o h ee phases: indi idual cue pe cep ion, in-
di idual cue p ocessing, and collec i e pu pose ul (in e - )ac ion (Mai lis and
Ch is ianson, 2014). In he cue pe cep ion phase, indi iduals become awa e o en i-

is ing sensemaking accoun . Ac o s pay selec i e a en ion, pe cei ing some cues while
missing o igno ing o he s (Oli e e al., 2017; S eigenbe ge and Lübcke, 2022). This
selec i e a en ion in he cue pe cep ion phase makes collec i e sensemaking agile,
since i is p one o dis up ions caused by dispa i ies and dis ac ions. In cue p ocess-

In many si ua ions, collec i e sensemaking based on e bal language alone is e -
