ABSTRACT
This pape uses bibliome ic me hods o quan i a i ely analyze global scien i ic
pe o mance and cu en esea ch ields in he ield o global clima e change. The
in en ion was o enhance knowledge o he scien i ic unde s anding o clima e change.
The da a used in his analysis is based on 259 pape s by schola s wo ldwide ha we e
published in 498 academic jou nals in he Scopus da abase be ween 2006 and 2022 o
in es iga e he me hods used in scien i ic esea ch o s udy clima e change. The
scien i ic knowledge, changes in esea ch ho spo s, wo ldwide geog aphic dis ibu ion
o esea ch, and coun y-speci ic ocus a e all summa ized in ou analysis. The indings
indica e ha (1) Th oughou he e a unde in es iga ion, he goal o esea ch on clima e
change has e ol ed om comp ehending he clima e sys em o de eloping clima e
echnology and egula ions, like laws and e icien ene gy use; (2) The idea o clima e
change is e lec ed in mode n models o ene gy e iciency, enewable ene gy ansi ion,
ca bon p icing, and ci cula economy. The idea o clima e change, seen om an o e all
iewpoin , a ec s ca bon oo p in , social and economic impac , ising ca bon dioxide
le els, and ca bon seques a ion; (3) since 2006, esea ch on clima e change ulne abili y
has g own apidly, and i s publica ions a e widely dissemina ed in nume ous sou ce
jou nals; in e ms o global clima e esea ch change, he Chinese Academy o Sciences
and he Uni e si y o Chinese Academy o Sciences a e he wo mos p oduc i e
ins i u ions and Wa e esou ce- ela ed dispu es and collabo a ion. Ou esea ch can be
used by schola s and policymake s o in es iga e u u e esea ch goals and o conside
he cu en di ec ions o clima e change s udies. Fu u e s udies can add ess issues
ela ed o human heal h isks, inequali y in socie y and he economy, policy and
egula ion in he con ex o global clima e change, and he a e a which emissions will
ze o ou . This s udy’s p ima y goal is o close his gap and imp o e ou comp ehension
o he body o cu en li e a u e.
1. In oduc ion
Since he Indus ial Re olu ion, he e has been a 25% inc ease in a mosphe ic concen a ions o ca bon
dioxide due o he combus ion o ossil uels and signi ican de o es a ion (Woodwell, 1989). Al hough
en i onmen al scien is s disag ee g ea ly abou he ex en o he clima e change ha g eenhouse gas
accumula ion is expec ed o cause (Ahmed & Tu chini, 2021; Schneide , 1989, Schneide , 1990), hey all
ag ee ha he Ea h’s su ace is wa ming mo e quickly han be o e (Li e  al., 2020a; Schneide , 1990,
Schneide , 1994; Wa son e  al., 1996). The wo ld’s need o ene gy will undoub edly con inue o climb
due o economic de elopmen and he wo ld’s popula ion g ow h, which is expec ed o each a ound
7.7 billion people by 2019 (Nguyen e al., 2020) and maybe 9.7 billion by 2050 (Alam e al., 2021; Ib ahim
e  al., 2022; Li e  al., 2020b). The ise in a mosphe ic ca bon dioxide has consequences o Ea h’s pho-
osyn he ic ac i i y concu en wi h he impac s o global wa ming (Allen & Am ho , 1995). The de elop-
men and execu ion o a legisla i e and policy amewo k o gua an ee inancial s abili y was he ocus

consumed. As a esul , in 2018 a eco d-b eaking 33.1 G o CO2 emissions we e eco ded (Ebi e  al.,
2021; Lange, 2019; Solano-Oli a es e  al., 2019). Fu he mo e, he buildup o CFCs and o he compounds
ha a e chlo ina ed and b omina ed is causing he s a osphe e’s ozone laye o hin, inc easing he
amoun o ul a iole (UV) adia ion ha eaches he su ace o he Ea h (Ekundayo & Okoh, 2018; Smi h
e  al., 1992; Wo es e  al., 1989). Conside able a en ion has al eady been paid o he po en ial impac s
o a changing global clima e on e es ial plan communi ies, bo h in ag icul u e and in he na u al
wo ld (Ala awi e  al., 2023; Muelle ‐Dombois, 1992; Tian e  al., 2012).
On he o he hand, he po en ial impac o clima e change on aqua ic plan communi ies—including
seag asses—has ecei ed e y li le a en ion (Alhossini e  al., 2021; Bijlsma e  al., 1996). O e he pas
en yea s, clima e change has also g own o be a signi ican poli ical, economic, and en i onmen al issue
as well as a majo opic o discussion in public and poli ical o ums. Clima e change (CC) is a mul i ac-
e ed, in e go e nmen al issue ha a ec s many aspec s o he ecological, en i onmen al, socio-poli ical,
and socio-economic ields on a wo ldwide scale (Adge e  al., 2005; Ande egg e  al., 2010; Fang e  al.,
2018; Feliciano e  al., 2022; Leal Filho e  al., 2021; Lima & Bone i, 2020; Náje a-Sánchez, 2019; Roos aie
e  al., 2019; Zyoud & Fuchs-Hanusch, 2020). The Ea h’s oceans will be g ea ly impac ed by he accele -
a ing a e o global clima e change ha has been obse ed his cen u y and is expec ed o con inue in o
he nex . The p oduc i i y, dis ibu ion, and unc ion o plan s will change as a esul o bo h di ec and
indi ec consequences o global clima e change. En i onmen al secu i y- ela ed issues ha e d awn mo e
a en ion h oughou ime. The academic communi y has been s udying clima e change and ca bon
sinks ex ensi ely in ecen yea s, and a weal h o pe inen esea ch indings ha e su aced. Tempe a u es
a e ising on many di e en wo lds due o clima e change (Fu e  al., 2018; S a is a, 2020; Yada e  al.,
2015; Geng e al., 2020). The ea h’s clima ic c isis became much mo e acu e wi h he s a o he indus-
ial e olu ion (Leppänen e  al., 2014; Manyena e  al., 2019; Peduzzi e  al., 2012). Comp ehensi e
long-haul empe a u e and p ecipi a ion pa e ns, as well as addi ional ac o s like a mosphe ic p essu e
and humidi y, a e used o cha ac e ize clima e change. In addi ion, he mos well-known local and wo ld-
wide epe cussions o clima e change a e he ising sea le el and he e a ic wea he pa e ns caused by
he disappea ing global ice shee s (Ga igos-Simon e al., 2018; Lipczynska-Kochany, 2018; Lu e al., 2022;
Michel e  al., 2021; Mu shed e  al., 2020; Ponce-Reyes e  al., 2012). The cen u y-scale inc ease in he
a e age empe a u e o he ea h’s su ace is known as ‘clima e change’ o ‘global wa ming.’ Acco ding o
he In e go e nmen al Panel on Clima e Change (IPCC) p e ace, ‘ he IPCC is now 95 pe cen ce ain ha
humans a e he main cause o cu en global wa ming (Ande egg e  al., 2010; Anse e  al., 2020;
Ma ín-Ma ín e  al., 2018).
In he na u al sciences and, mo e ecen ly, he social and poli ical sciences, he e has been a ma ked
inc ease in he ocus on clima e change. Scien is s a e ac i ely wo king o use heo e ical models and
da a o o ecas he u u e clima e and o unde s and he pas clima e. When conside ing ex ended
pe iods o ime, a wide ange o ac o s con ibu e o clima e change, including changes in sola adia-
ion, which al e he pa ame e s o he ea h’s o bi and he sunspo numbe , d i ing con inen s, olcanic
e up ions ha p oduce la ge amoun s o sul a e-based ae osols, e c. Due in la ge pa o he engage-
men o mul ina ional ini ia i es like he Pa is Ag eemen and he In e go e nmen al Panel on Clima e
Change, global clima e change is ecei ing a g ea deal o scien i ic, poli ical, and public a en ion. The
In e go e nmen al Panel on Clima e Change (IPCC) has eleased i s i h assessmen epo , which no es
ha many aspec s o clima e change and i s ela ed in luence will pe sis o se e al cen u ies e en i
humans s op emi ing g eenhouse gases (Bahadu e  al., 2013; Pachau i, 2014). This means ha he
impac o clima e change has al eady ‘locked in’, making i di icul o mi iga e he e ec s o clima e
change in he nea e m (Uni ed Na ions F amewo k Con en ion on Clima e Change, 2020a). Thus, adap-
a ion is a gi en ega dless o how ha d people y o cu emissions, manage he isk o clima e change,
and mi iga e i s al eady-occu ing nega i e e ec s. The mo e p ac ical and u gen issue a hand igh
now is how o ac i ely adap o clima e change as opposed o implemen ing mi iga ion s a egies. In
Wang e  al. (2014) quan i a i e analysis o he li e a u e’s de elopmen end in he ela ed ield o cli-
ma e change ulne abili y, hey ound ha issues wi h wa e esou ce managemen , ood sa e y in ag i-
cul u e, and socioeconomic sys em heal h we e cu en ly he mos alked abou in he ulne abili y
esea ch ield.

Wei e  al. examined model echniques and esea ch ho spo s in he ield o clima e policy modeling
using a bibliome ic app oach, based on he SCI-E and SSCI da abases. To sum up, he ollowing a e he
ways in which his s udy ad ances he s a e o he ield (NASA, 2020): (1) By e alua ing he esea ch
ends in he a ea o clima e change adap a ion, we ill in he gap le by no one else. (2) Based on he
analy ical esul s o his s udy, po en ial esea ch di ec ions and cons ain s a e in e ed, which will p o-
ide di ec ion o u u e esea ch planning and execu ion. Based on keywo d equency and co-occu ence
analysis, we explo e he mos popula subjec s ela ed o adap ing o clima e change as well as possible
e olu iona y pa e ns in his ield. Clima e change esea ch has been explo ed mul iple imes wi h bib-
liome ic me hodologies, e e since i s incep ion, du ing he ‘90s (e.g. Schwechheime & Win e hage ,
1999). The esul ha has ecei ed he g ea es a en ion in he li e a u e is he sha p inc ease in publi-
ca ions, which has been accompanied by a ise in co-au ho ship, in e na ional collabo a ion, and in e -
disciplina i y (Bake e  al., 2021; G an ham Resea ch Ins i u e on Clima e Change and he En i onmen ,
2019; G ieneisen & Zhang, 2011; Haunschild e  al., 2016; S anhill, 2001). While opic-speci ic e alua ions
a e equen ly used o e alua e he s a e o he a in pa icula esea ch ields, he e a en’ many com-
p ehensi e o e iews o he ield o clima e change esea ch. A ew ecen examples include summa ies
o s udies on ca bon sinks (Boyd & Juhola, 2015; Huang e al., 2020) and he ela ionship be ween in ec-
ious diseases and clima e change (IPCC, 2021; Li e  al., 2020; Uni ed Na ions F amewo k Con en ion on
Clima e Change, 2020b). Aims o de ine he in ellec ual landscape in his ield by poin ing ou and dis-
closing i s undamen al ai s, esea ch s eng h, in ellec ual ounda ion, e olu ion o esea ch opics, and
esea ch ho spo s. As a c ucial quan i a i e analy ic echnique, biblime ic analysis has been applied
ex ensi ely in many di e en domains and is capable o accu a ely desc ibing he gene al end o a
subjec ’s o ield’s de elopmen (Busayo & Kalumba, 2020; Bu le e  al., 2021; Labeodan e  al., 2016;
Ma one, 2020). A eal-wo ld p oblem endange ing human and animal exis ence is he in luence o cli-
ma e change, which makes economies ulne able.
2. Li e a u e e iew and heo e ical F amewo k
2.1. S udies on clima e change
Since he 1970s, clima e change has gained ele ance and will likely ga ne signi ican a en ion om
academics in he ensuing decades. The numbe o s udies on clima e change has doubled e e y i e o
six yea s, indica ing he apid g ow h o he ield (Haunschild e al., 2016). In he pas en yea s, he mos
ho ough bibliome ic e alua ions examining esea ch on clima e change ha e been c ea ed. G ieneisen
& Zhang (2011) examined a pool o 110,139 publica ions published be ween 1997 and 2009 using a
comp ehensi e keywo d selec ion speci ic o clima e change esea ch. The au ho s emphasized how he
ield’s publishing a e had apidly inc eased in he i s 2000s and showed he equency o clima e
change publica ions wi h espec o he 253 subjec ca ego ies and he 10 majo Web o Science ca e-
go ies. They also lis ed he wo ld’s mos p oli ic ins i u ions. Based on he online Science Ci a ion Index
Expanded be ween 1992 and 2009, Li e  al. (2011) looked a 41,457 pape s on clima e change. Zhao &
Li (2015) ga he ed 113,468 publica ions om 1993 o 2012 on en i onmen al assessmen (EA), which is
a mo e gene al ield o s udy ha includes clima e change. They hen desc ibed p oduc i i y pa e ns
along a numbe o dimensions, such as assessing he esea ch pe o mance o he mos p oduc i e
na ions, impo an subjec a eas, and jou nals ha a e mos ep esen a i e o he ield. Pasgaa d &
S ange (2013) examined he dispa i y in he a ailabili y o clima e change knowledge be ween weal hy
and de eloping na ions, d awing on 15,000 publica ions om 1999 o 2010. Thei indings indica ed a
no able imbalance in he a ailabili y o clima e change knowledge ac oss esou ce- ich and impo e ished
en i onmen s, as well as he exis ence o con lic ing conce ns. Haunschild e al. (2016) examined 222,060
a icles and e iews om 1980 o 2014 on Web o Science. They no ed a obus inc ease in mac o- ields
such as na u al sciences, medicine, and enginee ing, as well as se en clima e sub-sys ems like oceanic
wa e and a mosphe e. Addi ionally, hey p o ided desc ip i e s a is ics on he o al publica ion ou pu s
o 32 coun ies. Using a la ge sample o o e 400,000 clima e change- ela ed publica ions (up o 2018),
Callaghan e  al. (2020) selec ed 140 opics on clima e change esea ch. They nex looked in o he o e -
and unde ep esen a ion o esea ch opics in he e e ence lis o IPCC epo s.

A desc ip i e s udy o 120,000 a icles om 2011 o 2018 was ca ied ou by Fu & Wal man (2022),
who also applied a e m mapping and bu s de ec ion analysis (limi ed o a sub-se o 25,000 a icles)
o gi e an o e iew o he ield’s wo k on clima e change and insigh s in o i s de elopmen . The analysis
was concen a ed on i e clus e s o esea ch a eas (physical sciences, paleoclima ology, clima e change
ecology, clima e policy) and ocused on he eigh mos p oli ic coun ies. Nume ous bibliome ic assess-
men s ha e been unde aken o analyze ce ain a eas o clima e change esea ch. These ange om
s udies ha aim o e iew he cu en s a e o clima e science in ela ion o pa icula domains, such as
adap a ion, ulne abili y, and esilience, and speci ic a eas, such as geoenginee ing and ou ism (Janssen
& Os om, 2006, Bel e & Seidel, 2013; Wang e  al., 2014, Aleixand e-Bena en e  al., 2017, Wang e  al.,
2018, Rana, 2020); he analysis o collabo a i e esea ch pa e ns in he ield (Engels & Ruschenbu g,
2008; Jappe, 2007; Sangam & Sa i ha, 2019); he comp ehension o clima e change con o e sies (Cail &
C iqui, 2021; Jankó e  al., 2014, 2017); he comp ehensi e examina ion o he pe o mance o single a -
ge jou nals, such as Clima e Change and The Bulle in o he Ame ican Me eo ological Socie y (S anhill,
2001, Hells en & Leydesdo , 2016). Science- ela ed sociologis s and economis s ha e in es iga ed wha
mo i a es scien is s o conduc esea ch, including wha o esea ch. Thei indings ha e highligh ed he
signi icance o a ious mo i a ional ypes, including ex insic mo i a ions, p osocial mo i a ions (Blaise
e  al., 2017; Ca lo e  al., 2024; So mani & Uude, 2022) and in insic mo i a ions (Chen e  al., 2020), such
as he sa is ac ion o sol ing puzzles and ecei ing ecogni ion om pee s o being he i s o make a
scien i ic disco e y. Acco ding o ecen esea ch, o ins ance, people’s en i onmen al wo ies we e
heigh ened by clima e change disas e s, which in luenced hei o ing pa e ns and led o a ise in sup-
po o g een pa ies (Chen e  al., 2022; Ho mann, 2022). B aunschweige & Ingold (2023) p o ided
ano he example demons a ing how pe cei ed dange and ex eme occu ences in luence he c ea ion
o local adap ion s a egies.
3. Resea ch me hodology
This s udy’s esea ch design is an explo a o y longi udinal li e a u e e iew ha made use o bibliome ic
and his o ical end analysis. A he mic o, meso, and me a le els, he s udy has quan i a i ely examined
wo ldwide esea ch pa e ns. The hos ins i u ion’s subsc ip ion p o ided access o he Scopus da abase,
which con ained he publica ions used o analysis. The s udy examined esea ch publica ions ha we e
published on h ee di e en opics: (1) clima e change esilience, (2) ca as ophe esilience, and (3) com-
bining clima e change and disas e esilience. Keywo d, ci a ion, ins i u ion, and coun y analyses we e
among he da a analysis echniques used. The esul s we e isualized using he open-sou ce p og am
VOS iewe .
3.1. Da a ga he ing
Resea che s looking o s udies on global clima e change conduc ed a ho ough sea ch o he scopus
da abase. U ilizing he chosen keywo ds, he opic sea ch ield was employed. The au ho ’s keywo ds, he
abs ac , and he i le a e all sea ched o in he opic sea ch. The sea ch c i e ion was no es ic ed by
an expi a ion da e. Howe e , based on keywo ds, he oldes a icle was published in 2006. Consequen ly,
i is easonable o p esume ha esea ch a icles we e aken om he 2006–2022 ime ame. On Ma ch
2, 2023, a da abase sea ch was conduc ed. To be used subsequen ly, e e y eco d was expo ed in i s
en i e y, comple e wi h ci ed e e ences, in o a ex ile wi h abs delimi ed. Publica ion de ails such as
he i le, au ho s, yea o publica ion, abs ac , sou ce i le (jou nal name), a ilia ion, au ho ’s keywo ds,
subjec ca ego ies (disciplines), language, and he quan i y o ci a ions (i any) we e all included in he
ull eco d and ci ed e e ences. Since he e was only one da abase used, he e was e y li le possibili y
o epe i ion. Fu he mo e, he s udy esul s we e e i ied using he online ool ‘Analyze Resul s’ om he
scopus websi e. The comple e eco d and e e enced e e ences con ained published de ails such as he
i le, au ho (s), yea o publica ion, abs ac , a ilia ion, au ho ’s keywo ds, subjec ca ego ies (disciplines),
and numbe o ci a ions (i any) o each piece. The e was e y li le possibili y o ecu ence because
only one da abase was used.

pa e n o esea ch on ca as ophe and clima e change esilience, his o ical analysis was done. (2) In
o de o comp ehend he na u e, connec ions, and hough s employed by he au ho s, a keywo d anal-
ysis was done o he au ho ’s keywo ds. In o de o sa e space, he ph ase ‘keywo d’ will be u ilized.

A quan i iable esea ch me hod known as ‘bibliome ic analysis’, i en ails examining pa e ns and
ends in published li e a u e h ough he use o a a ie y o bibliome ic indica o s, including jou nal

e  al., 2021). Acco ding o Chabowski e  al. (2013), he goal o he bibliome ic s udy is o classi y

app oach is shown in Figu e 1 o help disco e esea ch gaps and possible esea ch ields. The s udy
was conduc ed using he bibliome ics and bibliophily packages a ailable in he R en i onmen (A ia
& Cuccu ullo, 2017).
4.2. Global esea ch ou pu on clima e change h oughou ime
Figu e 3 illus a es he annual o al numbe o scien i ic publica ions on clima e change wo ldwide om
2006 o 2023. I demons a es he exponen ial g ow h in he numbe o schola ly a icles on clima e change.
F om Figu e 3, indica e ha 2023 saw 166 pape s on global clima e change esea ch, ollowed by 111
in 2022 and 64 in 2021, which accoun ed o he hi d-highes numbe o publica ions. In he 20s, he
op 10 coun ies p oduced mo e han 60% o he new li e a u e on clima e change; by 2023, ha num-
be had inc eased o mo e han 70%. This indica es ha he scien i ic ou pu has become mo e di e si-
ied o e ime.
4.3. Bibliome ic coupling by publica ion
The idea behind bibliome ic coupling is o assess and quan i y he ela ionships be ween esea che s,
scien i ic publica ions, and esea ch o ganiza ions h ough he applica ion o bibliome ic analysis. By
examining how closely a publica ion ela es o o he publica ions based on i s numbe o publica ions
o coupling wi h op wo ks, bibliome ic coupling based on publica ions has he ad an age o assis ing
in he iden i ica ion o ne wo ks o collabo a ion be ween esea che s, academic ins i u ions, and esea ch
