An agent-based framework for selection of partners in dynamic virtual enterprises

Abstract

Advances in computer networking technology and open system standards have made practically feasible to create and manage virtual enterprises. A virtual enterprise, VE, is usually defined as a temporary alliance of enterprises that come together to share their skills, core competencies, and resources in order to better respond to business opportunities, and whose cooperation is supported by computer networks. The materialization of this paradigm, although enabled by recent advances in communication technologies, computer networks and logistics, requires an appropriate architectural framework and support tools. In this paper we propose an agent-based model of a dynamic VE to support the different selection processes that are used in selecting the partners for a dynamic VE, where the partners of a VE are represented by agents. Such a framework will form the basis for tools that provide automated support for creation, and operation, of dynamic virtual enterprises.

The changes discussed p e iously lead us o one o he mos impo an cu en manage ial challenges: he
necessi y o ind a balanced solu ion be ween globaliza ion needs and he mic o-segmen a ion o local ma ke s.
A company needs o in e na ionalize i s o e sea ching economies o scale and, on he o he hand, i canno

DYNAMIC VIRTUAL ENTERPRISE.

ealize VEs (Chu e al 04). Many e ms and de ini ions ha e been p oposed o VE, bu so a , he e is no an
uni ied de ini ion. Fo ins ance, Cama inha-Ma os (Cama inha-Ma os 01) ega ds he VE as “a empo a y

p o ided by he pa icipa ing o ganiza ions owa d he a ainmen o some common goals. Because each pa ne
b ings his s eng h o co e compe ence o he conso ium, he success o he p ojec depends on all co-ope a ing
as a single uni (Sanz 04).

S a ic VE (SVE) and he Dynamic VE (DVE), (Ouzounis 01):

AGENTS FOR MODELLING VES.
Basically, an agen is so wa e ha exhibi some o he ollowing a ibu es: au onomy, co-ope a ion, in elligence
and mobili y. I ac s ypically on behal o an use o a p ocess in a goal-o ien ed manne enabling ask
au oma ion i.e. hey ope a e p oac i ely in pu sui o hei goals.
Agen s ope a e a he au onomously o he use ( hey a e o en e en o ime igge ed), and may communica e
wi h he use , sys em esou ces o o he agen s as equi ed o pe o m hei ask. Th ough communica ion, agen s
may co-ope a e wi h o he agen s o ca y ou asks o o achie e goals beyond he capabili y o a single agen .
Agen ’s in elligence is based on i s abili y o sol e p oblems using a wide ange o easoning echniques and
lea ning mechanisms. Finally, agen s may be mobile, i.e. hey may mo e om one sys em o ano he o access
emo e esou ces o e en mee o he agen s and co-ope a e wi h hem. Agen pla o ms p o ide he suppo ing
so wa e in as uc u e needed o manage and execu e agen -based applica ions.

SELECTION OF PARTNERS.
Dynamic VEs ha e a limi ed li e ime, hus hey need o be o med e y quickly in o de o mee he deadlines o
he goals and he e is a need o o m hem o en. An impo an pa o he o ma ion is he selec ion o pa ne s,
who a e selec ed acco ding o he abili y o ul ill he dynamic VE’s equi emen s (0253).
