INTERDISCIPLINARY
COLLABORATION AND GLOBAL
CAPACITY SHARING

Recognizing he impo ance o capac-

ences, SOLAS has p io i ized de eloping a

plina y esea ch (challenges desc ibed in,

ABSTRACT. The Su ace Ocean-Lowe A mosphe e S udy (SOLAS) is a global
esea ch ne wo k dedica ed o ad ancing coupled oceanog aphic and a mosphe ic
science, a ield ha equi es bo h in e disciplina y and globally dis ibu ed expe ise.
Since 2004, SOLAS has os e ed an in e na ional in e disciplina y scien i ic commu-
ni y h ough coo dina ed science and capaci y sha ing ac i i ies. This pape ou lines
how SOLAS 3.0 (2026–2035) will build on his legacy by u he p io i izing di e -
si y, equi y, and inclusion, and expanding and s eng hening esea ch a he ocean-
a mosphe e in e ace. SOLAS 3.0 new ini ia i es include a men o ship p og am, skill
enhancemen wo kshops, inc easing access o esou ces, and a ne wo k o obse a ion
and aining cen e s. By lea ning om pas successes and challenges, SOLAS 3.0 aims

EMPOWERING EARLY
CAREER SCIENTISTS
Since i s c ea ion, SOLAS has p io i-
ized ea ly ca ee scien is (ECS) ain-
ing and in eg a ion. SOLAS’s lagship ini-
ia i es include summe schools and he
es ablishmen o a di e se in e na ional
Ea ly Ca ee Scien is Commi ee (ESCS;
Box 1). These ini ia i es we e speci i-
cally designed o ensu e SOLAS’s global
ele ance and o ac i ely os e in e na-
ional capaci y sha ing and knowledge
building, including eaching esea che s
om coun ies p e iously unde ep e-
sen ed in he ield (Figu e 1). SOLAS 3.0
(2026–2035) will expand on i s mission o
ain, engage, and connec he nex gen-
e a ion o ocean-a mosphe e esea che s
while p omo ing he global coo dina ion
o science ac oss he ai -sea in e ace.
THE SOLAS SUMMER SCHOOL
Since 2003, he SOLAS Summe School
(SSS) has been a co ne s one in ain-
ing and connec ing he nex gene a ion
o ocean- a mosphe e scien is s. S a ing
wi h ounda ional knowledge on he key
chemical, physical, and biological p o-
cesses in a mosphe ic and oceanic sci-
ences, he SSS p og am p og esses o
include in-dep h explo a ion o cu ing-
edge ocean- a mosphe e esea ch opics
h ough lec u es, p ac ical wo k, and
in e ac ions wi h in e na ional expe s
and pee s. Pas SSSs ha e been held a
a ange o loca ions, including Co sica,
F ance; Xiamen, China; and Mindelo,
Cabo Ve de. In addi ion, a success ul ully
i ual summe school was o ganized in
2022 du ing he COVID pandemic.
The SSS sel -iden i ies as a dynamic
in e na ional and in e disciplina y in o -
mal science lea ning p og am (ISLP).
Like o he success ul ISLPs, i p o ides
in e disciplina y p o essional and pee
ne wo king, (so ) skill de elopmen , and
cul u al exchange (Moskel e  al., 2021;
C i ano ic e  al., 2024). Recen inno a-
ions include pa allel sessions o p o ide
discipline- ocused lea ning oppo uni ies
and cou ses on he social implica ions o
ocean-a mosphe e esea ch, in e na ional
laws, and equi y, di e si y, and inclusion.
The 10 h i e a ion o he SSS, o be
held in B azil in 2026, will emphasize
SOLAS 3.0’s ocus on socie al challenges,
h ough ac i e lea ning ac i i ies such as
g oup p ojec s. SOLAS en isions o a ing

g a ed in o he SOLAS communi y o he
long e m (Figu e 2). Many SSS alumni
exp ess a desi e o mo e o malized and
sus ained in e ac ion wi h hei pee s and
o inc eased men o ship oppo uni ies.

he communi y’s needs, he ECSC held
a discussion session a he 2024 SOLAS
Open Science Con e ence (OSC) in Goa,
India. Pa icipan s s a ed ha being a

new na ional and in e na ional collabo-

The common OSC s uc u e, which
dedica es 50% o con e ence ime o in e -

communi y, and ECS in e ac ions. Since
2019, he OSC has also o ganized an ECS

SOLAS communi y.

na ional collabo a ion, SOLAS 3.0 will
go beyond i s co e ne wo king e en s o
ac i ely acili a e esea che connec ion
and exchange. This will in ol e de el-

men o ship p og am. SOLAS is also

capaci y sha ing by expanding and e i-
alizing less-engaged na ional ne wo ks.
