espec ing local adi ions.
Thus, egionalisms exp ess hemsel es in adi ional building ma e ials – in he ea ly
1960s mos p ominen ly in he No heas e n Ci y o Ros ock, whose b ick- aced pos wa
buildings in he cen e we e ecen ly ca ego ized as ‘No dmode ne’ (‘no he n
mode nism’).
In he la e 1960s and ea ly 1970s, meanwhile, a emp s ha e been made in Po sdam o
adap new mode n s uc u es o exis ing ba oque and classicis buildings by ma e ials,
acade colou s o e ical subdi isions o acades – in o de o me ge new and old

GDR pos -wa mode nism o he 1960s and 1970s in Ros ock and Po sdam.

In he socialis Ge man Democ a ic Republic (GDR) u ban planning and
a chi ec u e – unlike in he wes e n-democ a ic Fede al Republic o Ge many –
we e un hinkable wi hou he in luence o s a e and pa y (Sozialis ische
Einhei spa ei Deu schlands / SED). This applied bo h o he handling o he buil
he i age and o he design o unc ion o he new buildings.
Analogous o he e e -shi ing ela ionship be ween demoli ion and he
p ese a ion o he ‘old ci y’ he de elopmen o a ‘socialis ’ a chi ec u e ook
place in he cons an ield o ension be ween adi ion and mode nism. In simple
e ms he e a e ou phases, s a ing wi h he o ien a ion o many a chi ec s o
mode nism o he Weima Republic in he immedia e pos wa pe iod, he
subsequen phase o his o icizing and adi ionalis a chi ec u e o he ‘Na ional

F om he end o he 1970s onwa ds, his o icizing endencies – which can be
ega ded as a kind o Eas Ge man exp ession o pos mode nism – again can be
iden i ied in he ci y cen e s. Wi h ega d o u ban planning lo s o his o ic
s ee s we e o e build and especially esiden ial buildings we e demolished up o
he 1970s. Mode n as well as adi ionalis new buildings we e o en
o e dimensioned. F om he end o he 1970s on g ea e conside a ion was gi en

An ea ly exp ession o egionalis mode nism in he GDR can be ound in he
no h-eas ci y o Ros ock nea he Bal ic Sea. I immedia ely ollows he phase
o he ‘Na ional T adi ion’. In he po ci y he wa - uined and – besides S .
Ma y’s Chu ch – demolished Lange S aße was ebuil acco ding o he model o
he Be lin ‘S alinallee’ as ‘Magis ale’ om 1953 on. The buildings a e mos ly
b ick- aced and pick up ‘Na ional T adi ions’ wi h gables, wind holes o blind
a cades. In his case ‘Na ional T adi ions’ include he No he n Ge man B ick
Go hic, ha cha ac e ized chu ches (such as S . Ma y’s e.g.) and he a chi ec u e
o own halls in he Hansea ic ci ies in he Bal ic Sea a ea in he Middle Ages. The

The Ge man Building Academy, ounded in 1951, was he mos impo an ins i u ion in he GDR
building indus y, ‘which had he las wo d in all ques ions o cons uc ion echnology, a chi ec u e
and u ban de elopmen ’ (Lippe , 2018, p. 11.) The Academy, which was based on he Moscow All-
Union Academy o A chi ec u e, and i s indi idual esea ch ins i u es (including heo y and his o y

a e 1955 (Kossel, 2013). A he same ime Bauakademie P esiden Ku
Liebknech did no wan o ge id o he doc ine o ‘Na ional T adi ion’
immedia ely. Thus, he mode n new buildings e ec ed in he ci y cen e s in he
second hal o he 1950s could and should ecline o he al eady exis ing
buildings (Hohn, 1992).
This was also poin ed ou ega ding he Haus de Schi ah in he a chi ec u e
jou nal ‘Ge man A chi ec u e’ (‘Deu sche A chi ek u ’), published by he ‘Ge man
Building Academy’: ‘All closed su aces we e made o b ick, as his ma e ial

In Be lin's ‘S alinallee’ he second building phase – ha had s a ed in 1959 –

egional cha ac e is ics o new buildings was o icially emphasized by he ci y
and he dis ic managemen o he SED in 1964 (Wol es, 2009). Thus, e en he
p e ab ica ed and meanwhile demolished In e ho el Wa now and he
accompanying L-shaped a el agency and do mi o y (which s ill exis s in pa s)
on he sou h-wes e n side o he Lange S asse (1964-1967, Die e Jas am /
Hans Fleischhaue / Wol gang Ha mann) e e ed o he adi ional b ick
cons uc ion me hod wi h eddish ce amic iles (Ha ung, 2005) [Figu e 1.]. The
same applies o almos all buildings in he la ge housing es a es in Ros ock
(W i schan, 2018).
Ce ainly, in he ci y cen e he new mode nis buildings – jus like he buildings
o he ‘Na ional T adi ion’ – did no pay much a en ion o he his o ical scale o
he ci y. The only connec ion o his o y and adi ion was he used ma e ial.
P ese ed buildings such as S . Ma y´s Chu ch o he emains o he Ma ke
Place (mo e o less) seemed o be ma ginalized.

The cons an back and o h o mode n and adi ional ideas also became
appa en in u ban planning: Al hough ‘spaciousness’ and ‘gene osi y’ had s ill
been p opaga ed a ound 1960 and his o ical oad ne wo ks we e o we e o be
buil o e (Top s ed , 1988), he ‘P inciples’ again p oposed mo e compac u ban
spaces (Esche ich, 2018).
Fo Po sdam, he la e only had a pa ial e ec because he planning o he
cen e wi h wide and open spaces, which had al eady been en isaged a ound
1960, con inued o shape he cons an ly modi ied planning. Du ing he
cons uc ion o he ‘Zen um Süd’, ha had begun in 1960 and was isola ed om
o e all planning (Top s ed , 1988), a la ge pa o he wa -des oyed eas e n old
own wi h i s na ow s ee s had been demolished and was comple ely o e buil
wi h scale-bus ing new buildings, ha – a leas a i s sigh – did no ollow
Po sdam’s building adi ions. Howe e , Edda Campen assumes ha he
balconies o he new buildings, which close o he sou he n cen e owa ds he
wa e and open on o he i e Ha el, we e delibe a ely in ended o c ea e a
connec ion o Po sdam's opog aphy (Campen, 2011).
Mo eo e , in he o me esiden ial own, buildings wi h special signi icance o
he mona chy we e ex ao dina ily h ea ened a e he ‘ ic o y o socialism’, o
hey we e seen as symbols o he P ussian Kings, ha we e disc edi ed as
‘mili a is ic’ in he GDR (Top s ed , 1988). The ci y palace, econs uc ed in 2014,
was demolished in 1959/1960, he Ga ison Chu ch (1730-1735, Philipp
Ge lach), which is cu en ly also being ebuil , ell in 1968.
