Use of IoT technologies to improve shooting performance in basketball

Abstract

Technology is revolutionizing the world of sports in every way, from the experience of fans to the making and customising of training plans and even refereeing. Inertial sensors are now being used in many sports as they allow effective tracking of metrics that were previously not “within reach” without affecting the performance of players, due to the improvement of their size and “durability”. But it is not just the technological component that is evolving; new strategies and tactical displays are being increasingly seen in several sports, such as basketball. Indeed, in the NBA, in recent years a new trend has emerged as teams are shooting more 3pt shots, and the centre position is progressing as taller players are asked to be more skilled than ever. However, although the game of basketball is changing, a gain in efficiency is not being observed in jump shooting since the percentages of 3pt shots made in the NBA are not increasing as it would be expected from the increase in 3pt shot attempts. The purpose of this study was thus to analyse and make recommendations concerning the use of current technology for tracking shooting performance, as well as the use of new sensors. In order to do so, the main factors behind shooting success were taken into account, to guarantee that the recommendations were as well-founded as possible. The chosen methodology was design science research, where the proposed artifacts were submitted to validation through interviews, and according to received feedback, the proposed artifacts were updated.

analysis and con e sion o la ge da a s eams in o meaning ul, eal- ime and pe sonalised

nanogene a o , which uses body mo emen s o gene a e ene gy, has been de eloped (E ans, 2011)

Due o he complexi y and no el y o IoT, an es ablished bes p ac ice is also lacking. In addi ion, a
clea and p o en business model is necessa y so as o a ac in es men o he deploymen o
inno a i e echnologies ha will allow u he de elopmen (Somayya Madakam, R. Ramaswamy,
2016) (Zanella e al., 2014).

ools, like he Pie Me e and Fish G id. This enables he de ec ion o pa e ns and he sha ing o
newly gained knowledge be ween playe and coach (Polk, Yang, Hu, & Zhao, 2014).
While ideo analysis emains a widely used ool in spo , eco dings ypically gene a e la ge amoun s
o da a making he sea ch o key e en s an ex emely ime-consuming p ocess. To ackle his, he
use o ine ial senso s in combina ion wi h ideo has been a emp ed wi h a deg ee o success. In
2012, a gene al echnique was p oposed o show how ine ial senso s could be used o index ideo.
This was ano he ennis isualiza ion sys em, bu in his case he equi ed da a consis ed o ine ial
da a on s okes (collec ed by accele ome e s o gy oscopes moun ed in he acque ), a imes amp
o hese measu emen s and ideo da a. The main ad an age was ha , by using his sys em, coaches
we e able o skip la ge amoun s o i ele an ideo da a speeding up he p ocess o analysis. In

(Rowlands, McCa hy, & James, 2012).

accu a e. The i s mic o echnology senso o be alida ed bo h in e nally and ex e nally was he

and in ensi y o collisions pe o med in ugby leagues (Gabbe , 2013).

caused (Espinosa e al., 2015). The use o senso s p esen s majo ad an ages such as he
measu emen o physical ac i i y and moni o ing o physical i ness which can be used o p edic
pe o mance and p e en inju y. In addi ion, when combined wi h biophysical ma ke s, senso da a
can be used o e alua e muscle damage and es ablish he equi ed ime pe iod o ull muscle
eco e y. Unlike o he ime-mo ion analysis sys ems, in eg a ed echnology o e s eal- ime
collec ion o in o ma ion on a ious pa ame e s including impac load, di ec ional mo emen and
ac i i y iden i ica ion (Dellase a, 2013).
Fo ins ance, in 2015, a ugby s udy was conduc ed o de e mine whe he he numbe o con ac

Gabbe , Walke , Walke , & Jenkins, 2015).

2.2. BASKETBALL

and hi een basic ules, baske ball was bo n. As ime passed, changes we e made ega ding he way

bench. The objec i e o he game is o bea he opposing eam by making goals and sco ing mo e
poin s han hem. Goals a e made by inse ing he ball in o he opponen ’s baske and p e en ing
he opponen om doing he same as much as possible. The winne o he ma ch is he eam wi h
