BULGARIA
The wo -weeks season o 2023 in Yambol Dis ic ocused on a ious ac i i ies, including
documen a ion o se e al di e en assemblages. One o hem was he ma e ial om he las
yea exca a ed B onze Age bu ial mound in Mogila illage, especially he po e y inds. An-
o he la ge se o inds o documen a ion came om wo bu ial mounds da ed o he Roman
Impe ial pe iod exca a ed in 2018 by Polish Academy o Sciences also a he Mogila illage.
The wo mounds yielded abou 40 comple e and 15 agmen ed po e y essels, se e al glass
essels, and o he small inds o igina ing om nume ous g a es. Ou eam was o e ed o
join in on hei documen a ion and publica ion. The documen a ion was complemen ed by
sampling o se e al po e y and glass essels o analysis and compa ison wi h he Roman
icus a Yu a -S oyno.
The geological su ey, which s a ed in 2021, expanded in o he no he n a ea o he Yam-
bol Dis ic , ocusing on sampling clays om he Kabyle (Roman camp) hin e land. Se e al
addi ional samples we e ga he ed om he sou he n a ea o he dis ic . A his poin , we
ha e en i ely co e ed he a ea in ended o sampling and he clay samples a e cu en ly being
p epa ed o u he p ocessing and e alua ion.
Addi ionally, p elimina y obse a ion o he Roman pe iod sca e on he ields nea he
illage o Koza e o was conduc ed o e alua e i s po en ial o he nex yea (2024) in es i-

CROATIA

Ko ači and UMjes u. Alongside he exca a ions, in 2023, as udy season was conduc ed.
A Ko ači, ageophysical su ey conduc ed in 2019 iden i ied a ec angula s uc u e co -
e ing an a ea o a ound 100 m², ini ially in e p e ed as ap ehis o ic house due o he lack o
dis inc walls and aknown p ehis o ic habi a ion in he a ea. In es iga ion in 2023 in ol ed
opening a es ench (5 × 1.5 m) o explo e he wes e n edge o he s uc u e and de e mine i s
na u e. Unexpec edly, he s uc u e u ned ou o be awell -p ese ed Roman house. Al hough
his disco e y did no di ec ly imp o e ou unde s anding o p ehis o ic habi a ion a he si e,
i p o ides awelcome explana ion o he widely documen ed des uc ion in he Roman pe iod.
Meanwhile, a UMjes u, an addi ional ench was opened nex o wo p e iously explo ed
enches om 2020. P e ious exca a ions e ealed asi e da ing o a ious pe iods o he
B onze Age, including he Ea ly B onze Age (2400–2000 BC), la e Middle B onze Age (1500–
1300 BC), and ea ly La e B onze Age (1300–1100 BC). Gi en he absence o isible s a ig aphical
ela ions in ea lie enches, he objec i e o he 2023 season was o cap u e po en ial changes
by signi ican ly limi ing he exca a ion uni s bo h e ically and ho izon ally. Addi ionally,

The s udy season ocused on documen ing and conduc ing ap elimina y analysis o he
po e y collec ed du ing he 2017–2022 seasons. U ilizing aLase Aided P o ile , mo e han
600 indi idual diagnos ic po e y agmen s we e me iculously eco ded and subsequen ly

NORTHERN MACEDONIA

-Macedonian eams in he Lake Oh id egion in 2023. These we e supplemen ed by asepa a e
isi o he A chaeological Museum o he Republic o No h Macedonia in Skopje o he
pu pose o s udying he p e iously disco e ed ma e ial.
Fi s , he a chaeological in es iga ions by he ICAR a he G adish e Visho in Dolno
Lakoche ej, which has al eady s a ed in 2022, con inued in Ma ch and Ap il. The aim o his
exca a ion, is o gain ini ial s a ig aphic and ch onological da a on he de elopmen o hill-
op se lemen s in he egion du ing he B onze and I on ages. In 2023, asecond ench was
opened wi h he in en ion o in es iga e he a ea wi hin he (Hellenis ic) enclosu e wall in
mo e de ail. The exca a ion was supplemen ed by a ield su ey o he e aces su ounding
he o i ied a ea. In addi ion o a chaeological inds, a chaeobo anical samples (mac o e-
mains, cha coal, phy oli hs) we e aken om enches as well as soil samples o geochemical
analyses (phospha e) om he en i e a ea o he si e. Nume ous samples we e aken o AMS
da ing. Due o he poo wea he condi ions, he exca a ion had o be in e up ed and will
con inue in he nea u u e.
Secondly, geological and palaeoecological in es iga ions we e ca ied ou by he Czech
Geological Se ice (in coope a ion wi h ICAR, FoS CUNI, and LAPE in České Budejo ice) in
he egion in Sep embe . These inalised he g id o ca. 30 d ill co es (up o 15 m dep h) in
he Oh id and S uga allu ial plains, which now acili a es he econs uc ion o his o ical
landscape in e ms o lacus ine and allu ial dynamics. In addi ion, ad ill co e (up o 13 m
dep h) was aken om he we land o Belchish a in Deba ca alley o he no h o he Lake
Oh id. This is mean o p o ide he impe us o u he in es iga ing he an h opic impac
on he en i onmen and clima e. The ocus is on he impac o i on me allu gy on he local
landscape. Fu he analyses a e being ca ied ou in he labo a o ies o CGS and FoS CUNI in
P ague as well as LAPE in České Budejo ice.

Kaymakçı
The ICAR eam con inued wo k on he LBA o i ied ci adel o Kaymakçı in cen al Wes e n
Ana olia, led by Ch. Roose el , Ch. Luke, and T. Kane (Koç Uni e si y, Is anbul). The eam
consis ed o i e people, a ge ing wo k on ce amic inds (K. Ja ošo á, A. Pe e ko á, and

SIDEROS. TECHNOLOGY IN PRE ‑CLASSICAL GREECE.
The p ojec aims o econs uc ea ly i on echnology and i s socio -cul u al condi ions and e-
qui emen s in he Aegean om he P o ogeome ic o La e A chaic pe iods using he example
o ancien Ionia. Ha ing inalised he s udy o he da ase om he sanc ua y in Didyma and
he se lemen s Clazomenai and Old -Smy na/Bay aklı, we con inued in 2023 wi h a chaeolog-
ical and a chaeome allu gical in es iga ions on i on objec s ( ools and a chi ec u al i ings)
om he exca a ed se lemen con ex s a Kalabak epe in Mile us. The in es iga ions we e
ecen ly ex ended o include coope a ion wi h he esea ch p ojec o he Ge man A chae-
ological Ins i u e on he island o Samos (D Jan -Ma c Henke), whe e he me al inds (i on,
coppe -alloys, p ecious me als) om he exca a ions a he si e o he He a al a (2010–2013)
a e being examined. The employed analy ical me hods include me allog aphy, mic o -ha dness
measu emen , SEM -EDX, and XRD.
In addi ion o in es iga ions in G eece and Tu key, he p ojec also ocused on a chaeologi-
cal objec s in he collec ions o Eu opean museums. This allows in asi e analyses o be ca ied
ou e en when his is a ely possible in he coun y o o igin, due o he cu en legisla ion
ega ding he p o ec ion o a chaeological inds. Las yea ’sin es iga ions concen a ed on
he inds om he P o ogeome ic bu ials in Asa lik/Bod um, Tu key, nowadays in he B i -
ish Museum in London. The main aim o he in es iga ions is o supplemen he da ase on
ea ly i on echnology (i.e. smi hing echniques, hea ea men , ma e ial composi ion). The
a o emen ioned objec s ep esen he ea lies i on objec s om he egion.
TRACES OF COPPER ‑ZINC ALLOYS IN URARTU: UNKNOWN HISTORY OF METALS IN
ANATOLIA

The p ojec has yielded p omising ini ial indings, including he disco e y o b ass in i e
jewelle y pieces and gunme al (acoppe , zinc, and in alloy) in ou een bel s. No ably, gun-
me al appea s in speci ic bel g oups wi h simila deco a i e elemen s, sugges ing po en ial
s anda diza ion. Some o hese indings we e sha ed in aJAS: Repo s a icle (2023, 48/2) and
con e ence p esen a ions.
UZBEKISTAN
In Uzbekis an, ou la ge eam con inued o wo k on se e al in e ela ed p ojec s. Indi idual
eams we e again wo king in collabo a ion wi h colleagues om Te mez S a e Uni e si y du -
ing bo h he sp ing and ea ly all esea ch seasons. In addi ion o esea ch ac i i ies, we ha e

Iskanda Tepa
The esea ch a he Iskanda Tepa si e in he She abad Dis ic was acon inua ion o he
