ABSTRACT

a ional s a ions dis ibu ed along he Basque Coas (Spain), co -
e ing u ban and na u al beaches, po p o ec ion s uc u es and
na u al coas al s e ches. The pu pose o his echnology is o p o-
ide basic quan i a i e and quali a i e da a o coas al manage-
men applica ions. The mos ep esen a i e ad ances a e ela ed
o he ha dwa e, wi h he de elopmen o au onomous pho o ol-
aic s a ions, and o he so wa e, de eloping se e al ools o he
calib a ion and es i u ion o he images and o he ex ac ion
o he in o ma ion used in he di e en applica ions. In he long-
e m, wi hin a clima e change con ex , he mos essen ial esul s
ha e been ob ained in he moni o ing o beach mo phology. In
he sho - e m, he came a ne wo k wo ks unde ex eme wa e
condi ions, moni o ing wa e o e opping and looding. Apa

INTRODUCTION
The coas al sys ems play an essen ial ole o human li e. The
a ie y and uniqueness o he ecosys ems ha come oge he
in his a ea encompass landscape, socio-economic, cul u al, and
educa ional alues o g ea impo ance. The coas al zone is in
cons an change, and Basque Coas , which is highly popula ed,
an h opized, and e y exposed o ene ge ic wa e ac ion, he e is
he need o highligh i s ulne abili y. Adding he pe spec i es as-
socia ed o clima e change, i demands special a en ion.
As such, ideo emo e sensing echniques ep esen an e icien
moni o ing ool as hey can p o ide use ul da a wi h high spa ial
and empo al esolu ion and co e age. In his line AZTI has de-
eloped he KOSTASys em echnology and wo ks in he gene a-
ion o di e en p oduc s ha ans o m he images in e ec i e
coas al zone managemen in o ma ion. The i s KOSTASys em
s a ion loca ed in Mundaka has been cap u ing images o he Oka
es ua y mou h since 2007. Since hen, o e 20 s a ions ha e been
ins alled and pu in o ope a ion along he Basque Coas co e ing
di e en coas al sys ems and key in as uc u es.

The mos impo an ad ance has been he design and imple-
men a ion o pho o ol aic au onomous s a ions. Simpli ying in-
s alla ion, educing cos s and he adminis a i e p ocedu es o
ins alla ion. Ano he b eak h ough has been he ins alla ion o
in elligen con olle s, which allow access o he con ol o ce ain
pa s o he s a ion.
Fo came a calib a ion and o ho ec i ica ion he me hodology is
based on a wo-s ep calib a ion [1]: in insic and ex insic. This al-
lows he o ho ec i ica ion o he images on a uni o m z plane o
in a p ede ined digi al e ain model g id.
The mos used p oduc s in coas al ideome y a e hose de i ed
om he empo al p ocessing o images. Fo his pu pose, he
open-sou ce SIRENA so wa e is used [2]. SIRENA c ea es 4 di e -
en ypes o images: snap (ins an aneous images), imex (a e age
images), a ( a iance images) and imes ack images (de ined p o-
ile images).
COASTAL SERVICES
In long- e m and clima e change con es , mon hly ep esen a i e
imex images o mean low ide and high ide a e selec ed. The
coas line de ec ion is ca ied ou om hese images, and wo indi-
ca o s and de i ed: i) he beach wid h a low and high ide and, ii)
he in e idal and sup ali o al beach a eas. These indica o s a e
ela ed wi h he inciden wa e ene gy on he beaches and used
o desc ibe he mo phological e olu ion o he beaches and o
alida ion o mo phological models ha can be used o analyse
he u u e scena ios and associa ed e olu ion o he beaches in
esponse o sea le el ise [3].
In NRT and wa e o e opping and looding moni o ing, imes ack
and in a ed images a e used o moni o he wa e un up and
o e opping along di e en ansec s wi h an au oma ic o e op-
ping de ec ion ool. Ve y use ul o he Di ec o a e o Eme gencies
o he Basque Go e nmen (EU In e eg POCTEFA Ma li p ojec ).
In NRT ip cu en de ec ion and o ecas , a ip cu en isk assess-
men ool has been de eloped. The o ho ec i ied imex images o
he beach a e sen o an app called BEACHGUARD ha is ope a -
ed by he li egua ds, o ha e a be e moni o ing o he b eaking
zone and associa ed sandba mo phology. These images a e also
used o ob ain he ba hyme y o he shallow a eas o he beach
which is used o o ecas he ci cula ion pa e ns using nume ical
models.
In NRT use densi y moni o ing, a beach use densi y (BUD) ool
has been de eloped using machine lea ning, p o iding in o ma-
ion abou beach use s a endance o see indica o s ha a ec
ou ism. Fo he COVID-19 con ex , he ne wo k has been adap ed
o p o ide eal ime in o ma ion abou beach occupa ion o en-
su e complying wi h he ecommended social dis ancing [4] and
displays he in o ma ion h ough a mobile app (Nik Honda zak).
CONCLUSIONS

wa e o imp o e he capabili ies and e iciency o he KOSTASys-
em echnology. Also, o he applica ions as he use o In aRed
came as and speci ic algo i hms o de ec i e loa ing li e s will
be adap ed o be compa ible wi h he ha dwa e o he s a ions.
AZTI is also wo king on ob aining hyd odynamic da a om
imes ack images (wa e heigh and low in o ma ion). The i s
e sion o he algo i hm has been de eloped. The esul s a e
p omising bu u he wo k is needed o ge an ope a ional ool
and gene a e ano he eliable sou ce o da a.
All he ongoing wo ks and he in eg a ion o he ideome y da a
wi h modelling ools a e opening new o ecas ing capaci ies bo h
wi h long e m and sho - e m applica ions. A good p ac ice in he
implemen a ion o ideome y opens up pe spec i es o Eu ope-
an collabo a ion and in eg a ion in he coas al obse ing ne wo k.
