INTRODUCTION
The explo a ion o he py amid complex o King Djedka e in Sou h Saqqa a and o he su ‑
ounding ceme e y has b ough o ligh new e idence on he la e Fi h Dynas y. The documen‑
a ion wo k ha has ecen ly been ca ied ou in he king’s une a y emple has e ealed many
in e es ing a chi ec u al de ails p ese ed in his monumen (see abo e all Megahed– Jánosi
2017 and 2020; Megahed– Jánosi– Vymazalo á 2017, 2018 and 2019). A he same ime, apa
o he neighbou ing queen’s une a y emple was unco e ed du ing he explo a ion o he
no h side o he king’sp ecinc (Megahed– Jánosi– Vymazalo á 2019: 23–34), which included
e idence on he name and i le o i s owne , he king’swi e Se ibho (Megahed– Jánosi– Vy‑
mazalo á 2019: 32–33; Megahed– Vymazalo á 2020a). A omb wi h one o he ea lies deco a ed
bu ial apa men s has ecen ly been unco e ed in he ceme e y nea he queen’smonumen ,
p o iding indica ions on he de elopmen o a chi ec u al and a is ic o ms in his pe iod
(Megahed– Vymazalo á 2019).
The monumen o Queen Se ibho has a ac ed he a en ion o schola s since 1952, when
Ahmed Fakh y unco e ed he une a y emple on he eas side o he py amid. No e idence
on he owne was hen unco e ed ( o decades, she was e e ed o as an “anonymous queen”),
bu many a chi ec u al ea u es in his monumen poin ed o a a he excep ional s a us o
i s owne (see he discussions in Mou si 1987; Jánosi 1989; Jánosi 1996: 36–37). A e asho
ini ial season o su ey conduc ed in he queen’scomplex by he cu en mission p io o he
“Lo us Re olu ion” (Megahed 2011), he wo k e u ned o he queen’smonumen in 2018, when
apo ico and se e al o he ooms we e unco e ed along he sou h side o he queen’spy amid
du ing he cleaning o he a ea a he no h ‑eas pa o he king’s une a y emple (Megahed–
Jánosi– Vymazalo á 2019: 23–34).
Du ing he explo a ion o he queen’smonumen , anumbe o elie agmen s and blocks
wi h elie s ha e been unco e ed in he queen’spy amid complex– some in 1952 by Ahmed
Fakh y and o he s in 2010 and 2018 by he cu en Egyp ian mission. Only a ew elie ag‑
men s ha e been published. They show a ious deco a i e hemes, including hose ha a e
ypical o Old Kingdom monumen s, such as o e ings, he slaugh e o sac i icial animals,
pe soni ica ions o une a y es a es, e c. (see Mou si 1987; Megahed 2011); some agmen s
seem o show pa s o he queen’s igu e (Megahed– Vymazalo á 2021). Some o he elie
agmen s om he queen’s une a y emple, howe e , con ain hemes ha do no seem o
be so usual o aqueen’smonumen (Megahed– Vymazalo á 2020b).
THE 2020 SONDAGE
In he sp ing o 2020, asondage was unde aken be ween he no h wall o he une a y emple
o King Djedka e and he sou h pa o he emple o Queen Se ibho , in he cen al pa o he
so ‑called T.g a ea ( o he T.g a ea and i s explo a ion, see Megahed– Jánosi– Vymazalo á 2019:

19–33). The sondage was ca ied ou immedia ely o he sou h o he queen’s emple po ico,
o he sou h o i s p ese ed pa emen , whe e aclus e o s ones was documen ed in 2018
( ig. 1). The wo k eached ca. 1.5 m below he le el o he emple’spa emen , and i ex ended
se e al me e s o he sou h o he po ico. The deb is o his a ea consis ed o limes one pieces
and chips wi h asmall amoun o yellow sand in he uppe pa , which g adually inc eased
a lowe le els and owa ds he sou h pa o he sondage.
Du ing his wo k, se e al blocks o whi e limes one and ed g ani e we e unco e ed in
he sondage, oge he wi h a ew smalle agmen s, which seem o ha e belonged o he
queen’smonumen . Conside ing hei loca ion, hese blocks and agmen s possibly came om
he walls and oo ing o he po ico, bu hei o iginal posi ion wi hin he queen’smonumen
s ill needs o be con i med in u u e a e he conclusion o he wo k. Only a ew blocks we e
e ealed in 2020 be o e he mission had o s op i s wo k due o he COVID‑19 pandemic; se e al
mo e blocks on he si e a e wai ing o he nex season o be unco e ed.

a ‑nb ‑elemen in wo di e en epi he s, bo h o which e e o dei ies. The ea lies a es ed epi‑
he in he o m m + dei y + a nb, e e ing o Ha ho , is Queen Se ibho ’s. The Six h Dynas y

Ano he epi he om Se ibho ’sinsc ip ion, he epi he m nT w nbw (Jones 2000: 446,
no. 1670), is usually used o kings (Callende 2011: 264). Ne e heless, i is also a es ed la e
wi h Queen AnkhenespepyII (Ga dine – Pee – Če ný 1955: pl. IX). Se ibho seems o be he
ea lies a es ed emale holde o his epi he in he Old Kingdom.
I can be no iced ha he a es ed i les and epi he s o Queen Se ibho a e no compa able
o hose o he queens ‑mo he s, o ins ance Ne e he epes and Khen kausII ( o hei i les,
see Callende 2011: 161–163, 175–177; see also Ro h 2001: passim), and no e idence sugges ing ha
Se ibho was aking’smo he has been ound ye (Megahed– Vymazalo á 2020a: 1034–1037).
The shape o he omb, i.e. he py amid complex, canno be an indica ion o amo he /wi e
s a us o i s owne (Jánosi 1992: 56). On he o he hand, Se ibho ’sa es ed i ula y seems o be
in good ag eemen wi h he i les o he wi es o he kings o he Fi h Dynas y, o ins ance
Nebe and Khenu , who li ed sligh ly la e han Se ibho ( o hese queen’s i les, see Callende
2011: 192–193, 200, 205).

Besides he insc ip ion, he elie also shows apa icula ly in e es ing deco a i e mo i
o awinged sun disc, which is depic ed abo e he queen’sinsc ip ion. Awinged disc was i s
a es ed in he oyal monumen s om he ime o Sno u (Ćwiek 2003: 83) and awinged sun
disc wi h wo u aei can i s be ound in e idence om he eign o Nyuse e (Schonkwile
2014: 67, 89). The winged sun disc was closely associa ed wi h he concep o each ule ’sin‑
ca na ion o Ho us and his deceased p edecesso s (Ga dine 1944: 46–52; Ćwiek 2003: 345),
being acombina ion o he sun (Re), he alcon (Ho us) and Nekhbe and Wadje p o ec ing
he Two Lands (see Ga dine 1944: 48–49; Ćwiek 2003: 314–315 and oo no e 1302; Schonkwile
2014: 3, 91). In some a es ed examples, we can ind amen ion o Behde y on he sides o he
depic ion (Jéquie 1933: 42, ig. 22), which clea ly indica es ha he mo i e e ed o his o m
o Ho us (see also Schonkwile 2014: passim; see also, o ins ance, We b ouck 1941; Bo ego
Galla de 2004).
Due o i s kingship ‑associa ed symbolism, he mo i o he winged sun disc is no e y com‑
mon in he monumen s o queens in he Old Kingdom ( o b ie in o ma ion on he deco a ion
o he une a y emples o he queens, see Jánosi 1996: 123–180). This can be due o he bad s a e
o p ese a ion o hese ombs. The e a e, howe e , some a es ed examples da ing o he Six h
Dynas y. We can ind he winged sun disc, o ins ance, on he g ani e lin el o he en ance
o he monumen o Ipu II (Jéquie 1933: 42, ig. 22), whe e i is, howe e , ca ed abo e he
insc ip ion ha e e s o bo h he king and he queen. Asimila example wi h e e ences o
he king is known om he py amid complex o Nubune (Lab ousse 1999: 133). On he o he
hand, he winged sun disc in he monumen o Queen AnkhenespepyII e e s o queen as he
mo he o King Pepy II, so he king’sau ho i y is p esen he e as well (Lab ousse 1999: 153;
Callende 2011: 259 ig. 99). Two a es ed examples om he monumen o Queen Me e i esII
also shows his mo i (Lab ousse 1999: 147; Be ge ‑El Nagga 2005: 29 ig. 20; he second block
is ye unpublished) and he p ese ed pa s o he ollowing insc ip ion clea ly include he
king’sca ouche. Ye ano he example o awinged sun disc has been eco ded abo e he igu e
o Queen Sebu e in he elie om he omb o Rehe yshe nakh om sou h Saqqa a (Be ‑
ge ‑El Nagga – Lab ousse 2005: 16, ig. 2; S ünkel 2006: 152–153; S ünkel 2018: 351–353, 470–471).
Ve y small agmen s o he same mo i come om he monumen s o Queens Behenu (ye
unpublished) and Inenek (Pay audeau 2015: 211, ig. 1).5 These Six h Dynas y examples hus
seem o e e o he queens’ connec ion o he king.
On he o he hand, he mo i o he winged sun disc wi h u aei on he block om he
monumen o Se ibho seems o be associa ed wi h he queen only, and no e e ence o any
king is p ese ed on hese elie agmen s.6 A he momen , we canno en i ely exclude ha
a e e ence o he king may ha e exis ed in he bo om pa o he scene, which is no p e‑
se ed. Howe e , he winged sun disc wi h u aei cons i u es ye ano he indica ion o Queen
Se ibho ’sspecial posi ion in he la e Fi h Dynas y, as she is he ea lies queen o whom his

abo e hem, o which only in[ ] has been p ese ed. Two igu es we e ca ed in he uppe
egis e , o which he i s is shown ca ying bi ds in bo h o he hands, while he second
one is pa ly los and he gi s a e no longe isible. The ollowing egis e also con ained wo
igu es, bu only he ops o hei heads a e p ese ed on his block.
Behind he queen on he le side o he block, ano he g oup o emale a endan s is de‑
pic ed on he same scale as he p e ious g oup. Only he i s egis e wi h h ee emale igu es
is p ese ed. The ou line behind hem indica es ha his is he le end o he en i e scene.
The a endan s a e acing igh and ca ying a ious o e ings in hei hands. The insc ip ion

box no. 103, which is labelled as el ‑ma‘bad el ‑malekah– “ he queen’s emple”. These agmen s
we e ound in 1952 in he une a y emple on he eas side o he queen’spy amid. The p ecise
