c ea ed. Th ough ixed exchange a es e e yone knew how much gold was wo h a US
dolla , he alue o any o he cu ency agains he dolla could be based on i s alue in
gold. A cu ency whose alue was wice he alue in gold o a dolla , was wo h,
he e o e, wo dolla s.
Un o una ely, he eal wo ld o economics o e came his sys em. The US dolla su e ed
in la ion (i s alue ela i e o he goods i could buy dec eased), while o he cu encies
e alued and became mo e s able. In he end, he USA hey could no longe p e end ha
he dolla was wo h as much as i had been wo h, so i s alue was o icially educed so
ha an ounce o gold would hen ha e a alue o $ 70. Finally, in 1971, he gold s anda d
was o e and coun ies applied a lexible exchange a e. This mean ha he dolla no
longe ep esen ed a eal quan i y o p ecious ma e ial, and change he model o one
whe e supply and demand adjus he p ice, and in some cases wi h cen al banks
keeping he p ice be ween some alues. A e 1971 he lexible exchange a e became
he mos used ype o exchange a e.
Today, he US dolla con inues o domina e many inancial ma ke s. In ac , in e es a es
a e o en exp essed in US dolla s. Cu en ly, he US dolla and he eu o accoun o
app oxima ely 50 pe cen o all he wo ld's o eign exchange ope a ions. Including B i ish
pounds, Canadian dolla s, Aus alian dolla s and Japanese yen, we ha e mo e han 80
pe cen o all cu ency changes.
On he o he hand, he las yea s he impo ance o he exchange a e policies was
undamen al o many coun ies, and has become a huge deba e. Coun ies like China
a e he example o his policies, which a e ela ed wi h cu en accoun su pluses
unde alua ion his cu encies o gain compe i i eness. As o he eme ging coun ies ha
adap he exchange a e policies o each he de eloped coun ies. The Balassa-
Samuelson e ec ela e he exchange a e and economic ac i i y, whe e a ia ion in

di e ence is eno mous, we see how Denma k leads he able o he no he n coun ies
wi h he highes alues ollowed by Sweden and Finland. While in he sou h, I aly leads
ollowed by Spain and G eece wi h he lowes alues. Obse ing well he da a we see
how he dis ance is abysmal be ween hese coun ies, whe e Finland has wice he GDP
as I aly, whe e also Sweden and Denma k ge high di e ences wi h I aly.

Denma k and Sweden, ha e hey own cu encies, bu Denma k ha e linked his cu ency
o he eu o wi h he ERM II (Eu opean Exchange Ra e Mechanisms II) whe e he
exchange a e o a non-eu o a ea Membe S a e is ixed agains he eu o and is only
allowed o luc ua e wi hin se limi s. On he o he hand, Sweden s ill ou o his
mechanism because he popula ion did no app o e i by e e endum.
The es is o ganized i s wi h a e iew o he li e a u e used o he pape in sec ion 2. In
he sec ion 3 we analyse he RER equilib ium equa ion analysing he componen s and
he esul s o misalignmen s. The sec ion 4 use he misalignmen s ob ained in sec ion 3
o c ea e an equa ion o economic g ow h o la e analyse he coe icien and do an
impulse esponse, o know how g ow h espond o misalignmen s in each coun y.
Following in he sec ion 5 a e he gene al conclusions and in sec ion 6 and 7 appendix
and da a appendix.
2. Li e a u e e iew

a iables. One o he s udies bases use he pu chasing powe pa i y om Rod ik (2008)
whe e unde alua ion ha e a good e ec o e he g ow h, bu in he long- un his
suppose does no hold.
O he g oup use he long- un ela ionship o ob ain he misalignmen using coin eg a ion
ime se ies o panel da a, based on a model o de e mining he exchange a e. Agui e
and Calde ón (2006) is an example, he s udy o he e ec s o he misalignmen s in he
eal exchange a e (RER) o 60 coun ies du ing 1965-2003 using coin eg a ion me hods
o ime se ies and panel. Based on he model o Obs eld and Rogo ´s (1995) whe e
exchange a e equilib ium is p oduc i i y, ne o eign asse s, he e ms o ade and
go e nmen spending. Concluding ha dep ecia ion ha e a posi i e e ec o he g ow h,
like Rod ik (2008). Simila , Razin and Collins (1999) pose a di e en model concluding
ha o e alued cu encies ha e a nega i e e ec o he g ow h.

he EU coun ies, in he same way Habib e al. (2017) o a la ge panel o almos 150
coun ies.
On he o he hand, Sch öde (2013) and Agui e and Calde on (2005) conclude wi h an
in e se esul . The unde alua ion is no posi i e o he economic g ow h o he coun ies
in compa ison wi h he o he s udies. Looking a ound he li e a u e, we can see how
misalignmen s a ec s g ow h, unde alua ion s imula e g ow h in con as han
o e alua ion ha ha m he economy. Fo his, he impo ance o sea ch asymme ic
e ec s gained impo ance due o policy. Rod ick (2008), Be g and Miao (2010),
Comunale (2017) ba ely ind asymme ies wi h unde alua ion and o e alua ion, bu
Agui e and Calde on (2006) and Sch öde (2013) concludes ha bo h a ec nega i ely
o he economy g ow h whe e o e alua ion wi h he s onges e ec .

3. RER Misalignmen s
Fi s , as Cues as, Mou elle and Reges (2019) do in hei pape , o ob ain he RER
misalignmen s we selec ed a g oup o a iables o c ea e an equilib ium equa ion o he
RER. The a iables a e GDP pe capi a (pibpc), balance o paymen s (bp), go e nmen
expendi u e (go ), in es men (in ), bond yields (in ) and consume p ice index (pc). This
a iable is selec ed based o li e a u e p e iously explained and da a a ailable, see he
da a appendix o a de ini ion and he da a sou ces o he a iables.

Analysing he Table 1 o each coe icien , i s we can see ha GDP pe capi a is
signi ican in all coun ies bu he sign is no he same, wi h ou coun ies in posi i e and
wo in nega i e. In his case he esul s a e ambiguous, he sign expec ed is he nega i e
like G eece and Denma k because acco ding o he Balassa-Samuelson e ec when a
coun y is mo e de eloped should ha e a mo e alued cu ency. This e ec ela es he
di e ences in o a coun y be ween adable and non- adable ma ke , whe e he “Penn
E ec ” says ha RER ollow he same di ec ion: I he incomes a e high, he p ices le els

As we can see Sweden and Finland ha e a nega i e sign because he speci ic policies

and Denma k ha e spen mo e in adable goods so o his he sign is posi i e. Wi h he

coun ies.

As we can see he sign o coe icien s in some cases a e no he expec ed, i does no
ma e o much because he analysed coe icien s o a iables a e only a complemen o
c ea e a be e equa ion o economic g ow h wi h a misalignmen as main componen .
Be o e explain he compo men o g ow h when misalignmen a y using impulse
esponse unc ion o VEC models, le s wa ch he coe icien s and he sign o
coin eg a ion equa ion. Fo all he coun ies he coe icien is signi ican , he sign is
nega i e in I aly, G eece, Denma k and Finland meaning a posi i e ela ionship be ween
misalignmen s and g ow h. On he o he hand, Spain and Sweden ha e a nega i e
ela ion be ween misalignmen s and g ow h, an inc emen o misalignmen s educes he

The sign o coe icien may be explained how is he g ow h compo men bu , in some
cases, can no be ue his ela ionship. Fo ob ain a mo e accu a e esponse o he
G ow h when misalignmen s changes, we use he Impulse Response o Cholesky One
S.D. Inno a ions. Th ough his i is possible ob ain in a be e way he e ec on he

Once he coun ies a e analysed, we can ge some conclusions. The equa ion o ela e

Al hough, in he VEC coe icien s some o he a iables ha e no signi ica ion he
misalignmen s a e signi ican in all he coun ies, whe e he sign wi h he excep ion o
Finland a e in he same way as he impulse esponse. Respec he no h and he sou h,
