2. Expe imen al design, ma e ials and me hods
2.1. Plan ma e ial and expe imen al design
The plan ma e ial used o analyzing he quali y o biomass as a ec ed by ungal endophy es was
p oduced by plan s g owing in a common ga den a Ruissalo Bo anical Ga den (Uni e si y o Tu ku,
Finland). Besides he comme cial cul i a ‘Ken ucky-31’, seeds o S. phoenix ( all escue) we e col-
lec ed om h ee geog aphic loca ions a ound he Bal ic Sea: Åland, (Finland), Go land and Söde -
manland (Sweden). F om each seed lo (i.e. popula ion), a pa o he collec ed seeds was ea ed wi h
hea ed wa e in o de o kill he ungus and o ob ain endophy e- ee plan s. Thus, endophy e-
symbio ic (Eþ; un ea ed) and non-symbio ic seeds (E; ea ed) we e ob ained o each popula ion.
Ten indi idual plan s o each popula ion and symbio ic s a us we e placed a andom in a g id wi h

o each plan in 2005 ( o de ails see: [2,3]). Following a simila design, 10 indi idual plan s o S.
p a ensis (meadow escue; cul i a ‘Kaspe ’), symbio ic (Eþ) and non-symbio ic (E) wi h endo-
phy e, we e plan ed in 2008 ( o de ails see: [4]). Along he successi e yea s, all plan s we e checked
unde ligh mic oscope o endophy e p esence o absence o confi m he nominal symbio ic s a us.
A he end o he g owing season (au umn 2011), he abo eg ound biomass o plan s om each
combina ion o species, popula ion, and symbio ic s a us we e ha es ed. The biomass belonging o
he 10 plan s om each ea men was pooled and mixed. Th ee samples pe ea men con aining
ai -d ied lea es and pseudos ems we e aken o un he analyses o biomass cha ac e iza ion.
2.2. Biomass cha ac e iza ion
Samples we e analyzed in e ms o ca bon con en and mine al composi ion (Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, N,
K, P, S and Zn). Mine al composi ion was de e mined by he ICP-OES (induc i ely coupled plasma
op ical emission spec ome y) me hod. To al ca bon and ni ogen we e de e mined wi h an au o-
ma ed d y combus ion me hod (Dumas me hod) by Leco T uMac CN- analyze , Leco Co po a ion, USA.
(De ails a e included in he associa ed esea ch a icle [1]). Acid de e gen fibe [ADF: cellulo-
seþligninþash (mine als and silica)] and acid de e gen lignin (ADL: lignin) we e de e mined by
using he fil e bag echnique, wi h an Ankom Au oma ed Fibe Analyze A2000, based on he ana-
ly ical me hod by Goe ing and Van Soes [5].
Fungal alkaloid concen a ion was de e mined on one sample o biomass pe ea men . E go a-
line and i s isome e go alinine we e quan ified by HPLC ollowing a modifica ion o he me hods
desc ibed by Hill e al. [6] and Yue e al. [7]. Pe amine alkaloid concen a ion was de e mined using
he HPLC me hod desc ibed by Ba ke e al. [8] and Yue e al. [9] (see [1]).
