Rainis — rainistika, Vatmana paper— vatman papirs ‘vatmanas’, p. 100). In Lithuanian linguistics it is unusual to seriously talk about making action names directly from nouns (bypassing the verb), while still adding a iš verb suffix, as that, for example, koks ciematavimas ir “settlement” is made of a village iš „settlement“ iš verb suffix su -adverb suffix ir - Sana (p. 84), or only the matter of grammar (adaptation), conversion of o ne borrowed words in Lithuanian linguistics would be considered the coincidence of the masculine gender of the adjective and the noun, such as in Latvian fakultativs (p. 98; in Lithuanianthese words are differently transliterated -- as fakultatyvus andfakultatyvus, but this is not considered a subject of endings). There is no doubt that the valuable book was received only by ne linguists, Latvian terminology managers in various fields, users, language culture workers, to whom the author dedicated ją ir (p. 4, 25), but the ir science of the Latvian language itself and general terminology. The more such thorough studies of the terminology of a particular language, the stronger and more scientific will be the general theory of terminology, which, be tų a set of statements of rules, seemingly artificial, imposed on languages iš from the side, most often contrary to the real life of languages, su usage requirements. When studying jų the terms, systems, language ir relations and the influence of non-verbal factors in individual languages, it jų usually becomes clear that the requirements ir and rules cannot be made absolute in any way. Terminology, like language tų itself, is a living, changing phenomenon, its change even more noticeable than that of many other ir parts of the language system, and more dependent on the voluntary activity of people. All this can be seen beautifully in the book of V. Skujienė. Thus, the pleasure of reading “The Principles of Latvian Terminology Management” turned into joy over the success of a dear colleague of neighboring terminology. The “Lithuanian Physics Collection”, the thirtieth anniversary of which was celebrated two years ago, is read by physicists and specialists in other fields of science not only in Lithuania, but also abroad. The articles are printed in Russian or English Ušpalis K. The origins of the Lithuanian Physics Collection//Fizir ikų žinios. 1991. No. 1. P. 18-19. 90
These abstracts, like other scientific style publications, are characterized by abstractness, clarity, logic, accuracy, brevity, etc., which are usually determined by terminology, nomination, constructions and sentence word order stereotypes. The language of most of the abstracts of the Lithuanian Physics Collection is fluent, the sentences are accurate, clear, the terms are correct and properly selected. However, there are also doubts. Here is another sentence from the summary of this collection. It was found that the electron drift velocity decreases by 17% at E= 20 V/cm during electron-- hole interaction. A brief analysis of the propagation of coherent light rays through lenses and their interaction leads to the outline of the principles of optical information processing or capture. Ultraviolir et radiation varies throughout the year. What is the problem with these sentences? Of course, both terms, words and style. These things, especially terminology and lexicon, in more detail and will be discussed in the article. Manuscripts of abstracts of articles submitted to the Lithuanian Physics Collection in 1990—1993 were selected for analysis. 1. Terms of reference. One of the main problems of the terminology of abstracts is the disregard of the terms presented in the Physics Terms Dictionary. Both the relative and the specific terms are usually ignored. For example, the glossary provides the terms transformation as “a certain change in a type of matter or energy”; jump ‘change in the state of an electron (or positron) (e.g., during light absorption, emission)’; junction “a type of contact in an electrical circuit where two materials are joined together”. Abstract authors still often refer to all these concepts as one unrepresentable value of meaning —transition, e.g.: phase transition (= phase transformation 393), atomic transition (= nuclear transformation, cf. 393 atomic transformation see nuclear transformation); electron transition (= electron jump 339), potential transition (= potential jump 339); electron-hole transition (= electron-hole junction 265), p-n transition (= pn junction 265). And instead of a heterogeneous or heterogeneous junction in the abstracts there is an irregular * Physics Terms Dictionary. V., 1979. 677 p. (hereinafter referred to as the dictionaries page only). 91
and the term not to be given —heteroperéjimy (as the temperature increases, the drift barriers caused by heteroperéjimy must decrease). The terms overlapping, overlapping, ir etc. should not be considered as values of the meaning. Overlap. In the "Physical Dictionary" the term sanklota is used for this concept. Instead of the composite term strip re-laying, therefore, the term strip laying should be used. in Many other compound terms presented in the “Physical Terms Dictionary” are not observed, for example, frequency characteristic 39 is replaced by frequency characteristic, combinatorial scattering 290 —by combinatorial scattering, non-equilibrium charger, equilibrium charger 154 —non-equilibrium charger, equilibrium charger, layered structure 264 — layered structure, thrust potential 229 —repulsive potential, capacitance 382 —capacitive resistance, direct measurement 178 —direct measurement, etc. The authors be of the abstracts use the adjective suffix instead of the noun's genitive su -inis, in the following -ė compound terms: wave number wave number281),base current base current drift velocity drift velocity (= electric charge (= 318), (= 103), (=electric charge 154)',electron hole plasma electron hole (= plasma ir correlation function 220), correlation function (= modulation noise modulation noise probability 92), function probability (= function 368), (= 92) ir t.t. Another problem of summary terminology is the use of terms that are not properly defined, e.g.: -- phase-frequency properties of polarizers, phase-frequency properties), electron-hole interaction electron-hole interaction electron-negativity (= electronic negativity, electronic impedance, the opposite property is called electropositivity but electronic positivity, (= electronic attraction). ir 268), (= o ne , This microsystem would fit the composite ir terms electronically negative, electronically repulsive metal, electronically positive, electronically attractive metal. In the summaries, it is still possible to ir detect long-deprecated irregular terms, such gų as current carrier (Observable potential difference, su unrelated to hot current carriers ų (= concentration gradient). 92
In some places unacceptable suffixes -inis, -ė adjectives iš of proper nouns, e.g.: plural function (= Gaussian function 91), Coulomb potential (= Coulomb potential 228) ir t.t. The terms of such action have been questioned already 1958 m. issued "Physics Dictionary". The Kepler force is corrected. Kepler's yoke, Brownian motion -- Brownian motion, Fraunhofer diffraction — "Fraunhofer Diffraction". In Lithuanian there are the verbs bejėgis, -¢, beformis, -ė, bereikšmis, -ė, besvoris, -ė, bevandenis, -ė ir t.t. Thus, the ir authors of the abstracts should draw attention į to this by using the terms of a non-dimensional, ir but a non-dimensional meaning, a non-defective, ne but a non-defective system, etc. ir Other similar composite terms, e.g.: nekontaktinis jutiklis, bekon taktinis matuoklis, are replaced with adjectives with negative opposite, i.e. non-contact sensor, non-contact meter. Abstracts contain composite terms with irregularly enriched adjectives, e.g.: high-frequency high-frequency) oscillations, high-temperature high-temperature) -- laser microscope, two-circuit two-circuit) scheme, liquid crystal liquid crystal) light (= modulator, large-dispersion large-dispersion) (= fraction. (= (= (= The third problem is the — abuse of international terms. The summaries can detect such borrowings that have already been waived in the year-ago issued 35 "Physical terms dictionary", e.g.: diagonal diagonal), diameter diameter), coaxial coaxial) (= waveguide, local local) tension, (= magnetoresistive magnetovarziné) (= electric drive forceresistive resistive) pressure (= sensor, partial partial) wave, other borrowings, as (= specific specific) heat, resistance, loop), viscometer viscometer), visual (= (=visual) indicator, etc. (= o (= (= (= attempted to ir 1979 m. abandon in the issued "Dictionary of Physics Terms". The lexicon. Of the lexical things, the most obstructive are words of unchangeable meaning, verbs and simply foreign words. E.g.: apart n. svet. —with, except: the field is quantizing and homogeneous, apart (= excepting) a narrow channel; rozhodnúť —much better determine, determine: <...> dependence on phase difference <...> is determined by quantities; the change of recombinant centers is determined by non-thermal processes (=change is caused by non-thermal events); given—nevart.r "this,that- ". The Russian participle aannwi, of course, influenced the emergence of such a non-descriptive meaning. B sannom Ci0Bape in this dictionary, B JaHHHA MOMEHT-At this moment and so on. The following should therefore be corrected: <...> the method that is most convenient in the given (= this) case is used; these quantities fully describe the accumulated energy at the user (= at a certain, this) time point. Often the authors of the abstracts, having disliked the Russian language, use the participant’s “established, necessary; provided for; selected- ’. It is also nothing more than a failed translation of the Russian word 3aiannnA, e.g.: boundary conditions can be specified (defined, selected) in three ways; <...> obtained dependence on the given accuracy of it (= the chosen one). In the summaries you can even find the ir recursive verb to set, e.g.: <..> užsidavus (= having set, having foreseen) 94

As can be seen, the terminology and lexical problems of the abstracts are: 1) terminy variation (when the terms presented in previous terminology dictionaries are ignored), 2) excessive internationalization of terminology (when there is too much reliance on other languages and the resources of the Lithuanian language are not used) and 3) words of unpresentable meaning (when the meanings are usually blindly borrowed from other languages). Thus, the authors of the abstracts are too little interested in the terminology and language culture of their field, they could turn more often to the “Physics Terms Dictionary”, “The Dictionary of Contemporary Lithuanian Language”, “Language Practice Tips”, “Terminology Correction” and other publications. ir So linguists have to work The work of Sisyphus, constantly reminding, it would seem, such ir familiar bitter things.
